Square Enix dropped a new piece of Final Fantasy VII Remake key art earlier this week, reassuring fans that, you know, it still exists and everything. The bottom line, though, is that we've seen virtually bugger all of the highly anticipated release barring a couple of brief trailers. Still, not everyone has found the silence to be such a downer - some onlookers have speculated that the Remake might make it out later this year, or we'll at least get a release date of some sort at E3. Sadly, by the sounds of it, neither of these things are going to happen - not even close.

Speaking to Japanese publication Famitsu - as translated by Gematsu - producer Yoshinori Kitase makes out like the project still has a long, long way to go before it's ready. "We're still brushing up the scenes we showed you in the trailer," he says. "The level of quality we need to hit is coming into view, but there is still some way to go from here." Certainly doesn't sound like we're getting it in 2017, does it?

Still, there is some hope that the game's not too far away. Kitase goes on to say that "I have hope that [we will show the game this year], but that still hasn't been decided. However, when we show it next, I would like to do so in a way that's a step further than a trailer, such as at an event where people can experience it." If a build of the title is actually playable at an upcoming event, we might actually be getting somewhere.

In any case, the whole thing's definitely got a Final Fantasy XV feel to it. We're not saying Final Fantasy VII Remake is going to be in and out of development for ten years - God forbid - but Square Enix clearly announced the project too early, even if its presence did make for one of the greatest press conferences of all time.

What are your thoughts on the remake? Do you think we'll see it in the next couple of years, or will it be ported to the PS5? Be as cynical as you like in the comments section below.
