Football – the version played with the feet rather than the hands – is the most popular sport in the world, so it's no surprise to see FIFA 17 utterly dominate the sales charts around the globe. EA announced as part of an earnings call overnight that the latest iteration of its soccer simulation was the best-selling console game in the world last year – like, no other title sold more.
This is a pretty dizzying statistic when you stop and think about it, but it makes sense: the game has global appeal, is appropriate for all ages, and has an abundance of licenses that give it an authenticity that the competition can only dream of. With such dizzying sales numbers, the publisher also reported an upswing in Ultimate Team revenue, proving that this franchise really does print money.

It's weird to see how much sports titles sell, they're pretty much the same game each year and a lot of people still buy the new iteration. They should release one iteration per engine and support it with yearly patches and DLCs instead IMO...
@RenanKJ But that would make them a lot less money, as this statistic shows!
Not really a surprise but I know a few people who only buy consoles for the yearly Fifa releases. The way I see it, at least consoles and games are getting bought and revenues (hopefully) going towards making content that I'm more interested in.
@get2sammyb Indeed, I guess people are used to this model.
Do you know how much PES sold in comparison? My brother keeps telling me he prefers PES to Fifa, so I'm curious, hehe.
@RenanKJ I don't know but I imagine it was a long, long, long way behind.
I play FIFA way too much, to the point where I love it but it's a huge disruption to my overall gaming time.
It's been excellent since about halfway through the PS3's lifecycle imo. It's just one of those "one more match" type games that can get you hooked. There's so many more games I want to play but the lure is hard to resist.
Once you play one of them you've played them all.

Yes it has - but for me football games just haven't moved forwards like they should in the last 2-3 years. The pros for fifa are the wealth of content, licenses and modes to play. The perfect package for beginners and pros alike. But actually playing the game doesn't at any point feel like a real game.
Not really a fan of soccer, but I've heard these games are great, and I like sports games, is this game good enough for a non soccer fan to enjoy?
