You can be sure a system's reached a certain level of maturity when it receives dedicated games for every niche on the planet; only the other day this author was reading about an Aussie rules football game in production for the PlayStation 4, and now Climax Studios has announced Surf World Series, which is obviously based upon the best event in California Games. Well, apart from footbag.

The game will allegedly pull together the five best surfing destinations in the world, including Bells Beach, Australia and Waimea Bay, Hawaii. There's no word on Summer Bay just yet, but watch this space. Arcade gameplay will see you carving up the ocean across 45 single player challenges, but there'll also be online tournaments across three multiplayer modes.

"As developers, our goal was to capture the vibes that make surfing culture what it is – we amped up the intensity with powerful oceans, stunning backdrops, and simple arcade gameplay," said producer Jamie Fisher. "Surf World Series is easy to get into, but pulling off epic stunts and new school tricks makes it deceptively difficult to master."

Much like in the old Tony Hawk games, you'll be able to build your skillset as you progress. The game also boasts its own tailor-made water physics, which will supposedly swell naturally. The game's set to hit the waves in 2017, and you can watch a teaser trailer embedded above. We're hoping Alf Stewart is an unlockable character.
