The Last Guardian hasn't exactly torn the UK sales charts to shreds, but it's done reasonably in its first week on sale, outpacing predecessors ICO and Shadow of the Colossus on its debut. The long-awaited title from Team ICO entered the British best sellers list in seventh position – a couple of places behind timed Xbox One exclusive Dead Rising 4, though the Sony game was on shelves for three less days.
To be frank, it was a familiar looking week elsewhere, with Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare back on top, and both FIFA 17 and Battlefield 1 filling out the top three slots. Final Fantasy XV stuck around in fourth place, while The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim continued its canter in ninth. Expect things to stabilise over the coming weeks, as all of the big holiday releases are out now.
UK Sales Charts: Week Ending 10th December, 2016
- Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare
- FIFA 17
- Battlefield 1
- Final Fantasy XV
- Dead Rising 4
- Watch Dogs 2
- The Last Guardian
- Pokemon Sun
- The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Special Edition
- Pokemon Moon

Not bad for a fairly non-mainstream game to be honest, wasn't sure what to expect. Just hope we get to see Fumito Ueda working on a new project before too long and that TLG is a big enough success to keep him going. Always worry with games like this that it might be (no pun intended) the last one of its kind.
Nice to see Steep improving, rising this week from No. 24 to No. 18!
What a boring top 2. Both Fifa and Cod are known to be less than stellar this year, yet are still sat at the top. I hate the way pack in games get a boost, pack Disgaea, TLG or Resogun damn it, you know, games that deserve attention.
@themcnoisy They don't move consoles, though, innit.
@themcnoisy It's really irritating I know, but hey, I guess that's the power of a popular franchise...
wonder how well TLG did on PSN.. relatively speaking, it's got a fairly small install size (12gb) compared to most major releases. then again, it's a fairly safe bet this will be sub-£30 if not before christmas then in the boxing day sales, and it's a not game that has to be picked up day one regardless of how good it is.
you'd wonder why capcom (or microsoft) bothered to keep DR4 exclusive. at this point in the franchise, given its likely sales, that's probably not a best idea going..
Not bad for a niche game. I'm still playing it, it's really nice sony doesn't cancel this game after 10 years of troubled development. I hope sony remaster ico and sotc in 4k for ps4 just like parappa, wipeout and patapon.
@JoeBlogs Don't worry, it's in 11th.
What's that at number 12, coming up ten positions?
It's the return of Just Dance 2017...
Great game. Trico angered me in places but I forgave him in the end!
Don't understand why it's been compared with Dead Rising.
From metacritic though doesn't look like people are happy with Dead Rising based on user reviews.
@B-I-G-DEVIL It was the other new release of the week.
@get2sammyb Fair enough make sense now , Was just numerous sites seem to be putting it yet I thought you'd expect it to, been sequal and out longer
I still don't understand how Dead Rising is still going. I've played through numerous versions and sequels which range from mediocre to total garbage.
@B-I-G-DEVIL The Eurogamer headline was a bit...
@JoeBlogs There's another big update due this month so I'm sure it'll pop back into the top 5 again.
Excited to play this, unfortunately I am busy grinding the hell out of FF15.....damn this game is getting repetitive!
On topic, great review and when considered along with most other reviews its clear this game isn't the car crash some people were expecting. I will pick this up in a few weeks for sure, I am trying to resist buying it now even though I really do feel I should support the title by buying now.
I know CoD:IW has received a lot of Hate and it may not be the setting that people wanted, but I think the campaign is more cohesive and fun than BO3's. IW have also done a great job with the co-operative Zombies too. The MP isn't bad - it plays similarly to BO3 rather than Advanced Warfare and technically performs as expected from a CoD title. I don't find the movement as fluid as Titanfall 2's but I do think that is intentional due to the smaller map sizes and trying to keep the flow more like BO3 and traditional CoD's. Yes physical sales maybe down considerably but I still think its a fun game overall.
I guess I am not to surprised at DR4 outselling Last Guardian. I know that its slightly earlier release may have contributed to that but I do think the series offers quite mindless fun - creating crazy weapons and slaying hundreds of Zombies. I think the Last Guardian is more Niche myself. Not comparing the two, saying which is obviously better (or worse) or commenting on what they offer, I just think that DR4 may well have a broader appeal in the west. In truth neither game is likely to be purchased by me.
@B-I-G-DEVIL
Dead Rising 4 is getting a lot of hate on youtube and for good reason... Apparently the 'real' ending is locked behind a freaking pay wall.
@themcnoisy
They have become ubiqitous. Even when Fifa was inferior to PES, It was the game your gran would get for you for Christmas because she knew you liked games and football, and look, there's that footballer on the front of the box that she vaguely recognises.
EA just clean up annually with Madden in the US and Fifa World Wide.
@Gamer83 wow didn't know that. Anyone buying that game needs to seriosuly look at themselves. That is ridiculous, be interested in how it does this week now people know if this
@RPE83 Yes absolutely I agree.
But just imagine if the same old frickin games weren't packed in. I'm so fed up with Fifa being given a free ride.
I've bought consoles all my life, Sonic, Ridge Racer, Mario 64, Luigis Mansion, Halo, Watch Dogs - they are pack in games that meant something to me regardless of the quality as they showcased the system, my x360 with Fifa didn't. I couldn't even tell you which one it was.
@themcnoisy
The sports games do because people don't want a new narrative so much, they want the latest socks and to see the stitching on the balls.
The problem with Activision and Ubi Soft etc trying to churn the same game out every year for a cash grab is the narratives need to feel somewhat fresh and well written, and the mechanics/components/maps need to feel different.
It's why Fifa will still be #1 in 10 years time, but COD will be possibly be next to Guitar Hero at the glue factory, sadly people don't care about playing the same game every year because Football doesn't change much.
@B-I-G-DEVIL @JoeBlogs
Yup, even if you have no interest at all in the game just based on what Capcom pulled you'd probably find it interesting to watch some videos on youtube about it, I'd type Dead Rising 4 real ending DLC into the search bar. It's a pretty f**ked up situation. I don't think anybody actually knew this was going to be the case so I can't judge people who bought the game day one, but it's bad news and a practice that hopefully doesn't become the norm. I was a bit annoyed that SquareEnix made the developers take obvious story missions out of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided so they could be used for pre-order and paid DLC, which shortened the experience but at least there was still a beginning, middle and end. There's an 'ending' to Dead Rising 4 but it appears to get the 'real' one after the obvious cliffhanger, you have to pay and that's just ridiculous but given what Capcom pulled with Street Fighter V I'm not surprised something like this happened. When Ubisoft announced recently that it will be moving away from providing DLC to get the full story experience, it got my hopes, then this happens. Just shows how much further ahead of the crowd a company like CD Projekt Red is. The Witcher 3 isn't my kind of game because I don't care for that high fantasy setting but you absolutely have to applaud what they did with that game and it's DLC strategy. Capcom really needs to learn some lessons but it seems like the people there would rather run the company completely out of business given the idiotic mistakes that keep piling up.
