God of War's obviously a long way from being complete, but director Cory Barlog has confirmed on Twitter that it's playable from start to finish. This means that all of the title's features and content have been incorporated, and the team now needs to spend the remainder of the development cycle tuning, polishing, and fixing bugs.
We're obviously simplifying things; there's probably still a whole lot of work left to do. But as Barlog himself tweeted, this is a "very exciting milestone". So when will the reboot drop? You're probably still looking at 2018 if we're honest, but this all but confirms that we'll be seeing a lot more of the project in the New Year.

The one game i cant wait to get my hands on
yeah i still think 2018 but i think early 2018. They probably don't really need it to be out next year anyway.
I would rather them take their time. If it's gonna take another yr or so then I'm OK with that. Rather it be finished to the best quality but I was looking forward to this in 2017πππ
It doesn't appear to be a reboot to me, unless I am missing something? I admit I haven't followed many articles about this game (I just watched the trailer) but I see a much older Kratos, which I take to be a continuation of the existing established world and story, rather than a reboot.
Is there some official source that states its a reboot, or is it pure speculation? If it is just speculation, care to share your reasoning?
I'm excited for this one from the trailer, but then I remember God of War 4, and how it was so disappointing GoW3 got a remaster on PS4 and everybody just quietly pretends 4 never happened. And then I remember how short GoW3 was, about 6 hours of story for $60, so then I think, I'll just wait awhile and rent this from Redbox for $3 one weekend.
Everybody see how fast FFXV went on sale - $35 yesterday - and R&C has been $10, though that did release at only $40. WD2 is practically already half price. Horizon Zero Dawn looks fantastic plus it looks like a decent length story to me so far, I'd say 12-15 hours.
So while everybody is crazy about GoW now, I think they'll need to surprise us w/ something as it gets closer to launch to keep that excitement going if they expect to sell a lot at launch, probably in early 2018 as others have said. It looks like a Feb/March game.
This game they can release broken that I really don't mind xD
@rjejr GoW3 had the highest replayability for me, so it was worth the $40 on PS4. As far as this being a reboot, i'm not sure honestly. The events of 3 left the possibility that the world itself was getting a "reboot", and since the footage seems to be based on the beginning of norse mythology, that could be it. Maybe they just didn't want to put a 4 on the end since so much time has passed since 3, who knows?
Nah this has holiday 2017 all over it!

@thedevilsjester Definitely seems to be something of a reboot in terms of tone and gameplay, based on what we've seen. Heck, it isn't even called God of War IV. A thematic and stylistic reboot, if that makes sense. I assume that's what Sammy's saying.
@RedMageLanakyn I think you misunderstood me. I don't think it's a reboot. Maybe it's a continuation of the old storyline after 3, who knows? GoW4 already came out, it was called GoW: Ascension. I hate trying to spell Acension so I've always just called it GoW4 since if released a few years after GoW3.
http://sms.playstation.com/god-of-war-ascension/
@ShogunRok They can't call it GoW4, that game already released, it was called GoW: Ascension. How does everybody always forget that? Sony wiped it from everyone's mind like the PSPgo.
@rjejr Yeeeeah but it wasn't called God of War IV. Plus, it was a prequel.
@ShogunRok @thedevilsjester Yeah. I mean, narrative-wise it probably does carry on, but this clearly isn't a sequel in the traditional sense. It feels like a new beginning. Heck, it's called 'God of War'.
@rjejr I wouldn't consider Ascension GoW4, especially considering it was a prequel. I might have read a different post and thought you said reboot, my bad on that. I do agree on the hype thing. I would actually prefer a Fallout 4 style marketing blowout 6 months before release than get fed tidbits from now until 2018.
@Tsurii I guess I just find it odd that everybody is so excited for the newest GoW when the last GoW - made by the same studio - was best described as meh. 7 God of War games, 6 have been on 2 consoles, PS2 and PS3, PSP and PS3, PS3 and PS4, but the last game has only been on one. So while we're all very excited now, I think they'll need to show us something to get a lot of Day 1 orders.
@rjejr I think people are excited because by the looks of it it's a departure from the tried and true tropes of the franchise. Gameplay basically didn't change from the first one to Ascension, this one seems to be pushing the series forward in other ways. I'm excited to see where it's going.
@get2sammyb I understand you, but that is more of a "new direction" rather than a reboot. Its a pretty important distinction. With each of these games, you followed a character as he grew, his pains, his joys, his frustrations, his anger, and you were with him through all of it. An actual reboot would throw all that out of window. The events that made the character who he is and who you have grown to enjoy, would all be gone, replaced by some unknown. With a new direction, however, that color that made up the characters life, is still there in their personality.
Sorry for the soap box!
@rjejr Ascension was made by the same studio, but key staff members, including the director and creator of the first 3 games, didn't take part in the development, and it showed gameplay, quality, and story wise. It was the first time i had played a GoW game where there were bugs that forced me to restart a playthrough 4 hours in, and the gameplay felt like a cheap devil may cry ripoff. Definitely my least favorite GoW game!
When I read "playable from start to finish" I thought no QTE. Didn't expect it to be so complete.
GOW is not my cup of tea but this one looks more interesting.
@RedMageLanakyn Right now I don't care so much how they are marketing it as what they are marketing.
@fchinaski "this one seems to be pushing the series forward in other ways. I'm excited to see where it's going."
Pushing it towards Horizon: Zero Dawn if you ask me.
I'm excited, but I'm also leery. Zelda U looked great to me at E3 in 2014 when we were told it was a 2015 release. Now, it just looks like a cartoon Horizon, I'm not sure I care anymore. So far all we've seen of this is 1 video. 1 great video, but I remember that 1 great original Watch Dog trailer as well. And days ago when Yooka-Laylee was still on Wii U.
Industry has taken more than a few turns for the worse - season passes, DLC, delay after delay, race-to-the-bottom pricing. I'm excited as I can be for a game w/ no release date we know so little about, Kratos is Kratos and this is a beautiful looking game. But considering I'll be opening my new Slim in a few days I wouldn't be surprised if this becomes the first "Pro only" game. I know Sony said those wouldn't exist, but lots of people say lots of stuff that turns out to be wrong.
@DLB3 @RedMageLanakyn I get that it was the B team, but still, how much do we know about this game? 1 video? I remember when The Last Guardian had 1 trailer for the PS3 way back when. And FFXIII Vs.
I'm sure this will be a much better game than Ascension, but will it be $60 Day 1?
@rjejr Are you really doubting Sony Santa Monica? They've been one of the best devs in the biz for three gens in a row. I mean, if Naughty Dog hadn't really turned up the heat, they'd be Sony's flagship dev.
I wouldn't worry about this game at all.
@rjerj I see where you're coming from, I myself get hyped for very few games. The new GoW isn't one of them β but I'm definetly interested and will certainly buy it. Not day one, as I hardly ever buy games day one β lately, only Dragon Quest stuff because I love the series to death and like to support it when they release its games on the West. And about your Pro only prediction, nah, won't happen β there's no way that would be a sound business decision. What I believe is that we'll see a PS5 way sooner in comparison to the gap between the PS3 and the PS4.
@rjejr There's a lot out about the game if you dig around. For instance, the director, Corey Barlog, worked on 1, directed 2, and had a good amount of work into 3. He has stated that the story will fill in the gaps between this one and the end of 3, and that he wanted to create a new direction for the series, while also exploring kratos' emotional journey.
Normally i would agree with you on the hype train. I'm hesitant on Horizon, Andromeda, Zelda, and RE7 in terms of a day one, or even month one purchase, esoecially based on the discounts we're seeing on FFXV. But there are a few franchises, to me, that are day one purchases, and GoW is one of them. I have enough faith in what i've seen and heard so far that tells me i won't be disappointed.
Would love this to be marketed as a summer blockbuster just like UC4, but I think Sony would like to show it off at least one more time at E3.
I think even if the game is done, Sony are going to sit on it just so it can release at the perfect time. My guess would be February 2018- the month Horizon was meant to release.
Sony should drop this game on MS's big launch day, people would be like Scorpio what?
@thedevilsjester Story wise it's a sequel, gameplay wise it's a reboot.
@GamerDad66 Drop this game, drop ps4 slim price to $200 and preview the ps5 spec (just say 2x tflop than scorpio) and I think the scorpio is done, just like the dreamcast, amazing console but people not buying it because they wait for ps2.
So , we could play it on 2017?
They started making game on 2013 , i think it's possible to see that on 2017 but 2018 is tlou time! Or even DS ! Sony is not stuped by the way it will be able on 2017
@wiiware that can be said of a huge majority of franchise games. They dont tend to stagnate and keep the same exact mechanics for each sequel. They throw out what didnt work so well, keep what did and evolve. Sometimes those changes are huge (Bioshock Infinite is drastically different than Bioshock) and sometimes more minor. Thats not a reboot, thats just a sequel.
For GoW, other than having a more Tombraider style navigation, and a side kick, it looks like every other GoW (though with new generation niceties) definitely not "reboot" levels of change.
@thedevilsjester Gameplay wise it's very different with other god of war games. God of war ps2/ps3 and psp is like arcade double dragon, beat em up with static camera (you can't move the camera), while this game is like demon soul/tomb raider, a full 3D game with controllable camera. Bioshock and biosohock infinite is using the same mechanic, first person camera, so I don't think we can call it a reboot gameplay wise.
This game is a propel sequel story wise (start sometimes after the event of gow 3) but the gameplay is a totall reboot (very different compared to its ps2/ps3/psp origin). Which is good I think, gow gameplay is great but after ascension it's getting a little stale, I hope gow ps4 gameplay is like demon soul/bloodborne, only not as hard.
@wiiware the game is not "very different" at all. Allowing you to move the camera (instead of having it fixed) is hardly a reboot.
I think the changes are great (though few), but they are just evolutions of an existing game, not radical new designs, as a reboot would be.
Bioshock is very, very different than Bioshock Infinite. Hell just the skyhook alone is a more drastic gameplay change than allowing you to control a camera. Sure there are some other changes to the new GoW, but none of them constitute a reboot label, not even close.
@thedevilsjester Well, we agree to disagree then. I think bioshock and bioshock infinite is just the same game with different story and little gameplay changes, both are great games.
@wiiware but thats exactly what the new GoW is, same game with a different story and little gameplay changes. Camera, possibly a more exploratory environment (speculation) and a side kick are the only "radical" changes shown so far, thats hardly a reboot.
@RedMageLanakyn Sorry it's late but wanted to say thanks for taking the time to explain the GoW4 situation to me.
@rjejr No problem! Happy to help and engage in civil discussions anytime!
