NieR: Automata is shaping up to be another hectic action title from Platinum Games, but even if you're not too confident in your own hacking and slashing skills, publisher Square Enix wants you to know that you won't be left out of the fun. New information that's come out of this year's Tokyo Game Show suggests that the game will feature an 'Auto Mode', which essentially has the artificial intelligence fight enemies for you.
According to Siliconera, the Auto Mode will perform both offensive and defensive techniques so that players of all skill levels can enjoy the game. However, the AI may struggle against tougher foes, so you'll still have to get stuck into the title's RPG elements, such as upgrading weapons, to get the most out of it.
What's more, you'll be able to switch between normal and Auto at any time, and you can even configure the mode's fighting style to suit your needs. It's worth pointing out, though, that Auto Mode is only available on the easy difficulty setting, which you can also switch to at any point.
Do you think that more difficulty options are a good thing in game like NieR: Automata? Keep up those combos in the comments section below.

It's not the option I'd prefer, but it's great to have it for people who'd otherwise end up frustrated & abandoning the game. The more options to enable more people to enjoy a game, the better! 😺
This "sounds" like it's made for beating tough bosses to me if it can be turned on an off and it's only available in easy mode. Anybody playing on "Easy" mode can't play about things being added to the game to make it even easier.
I'm playing Ni No Kuni n PS3 now and you can switch between easy and normal at any time, and just knowing I have that option has let me play all out against a few of the bosses that might have otherwise just caused me to give up, like I did in Arc Rise Fantasia. So far I've only played on Easy against a boss once, I just didn't feel like traveling all the way back to town to buy a couple of feathers.
So if this is just "superguide" for people stuck playing on easy I say it's a good ting.
I remember a time the whole point to a game was its difficulty.
As long as the game isn't constantly encouraging me to use it, I'm good.
@banacheck Yeah, beating a game used to mean something! Now, most of the time players can walk through a game on "Easy" and say it was "too short" or "boring." Well, of course it's those things when the game doesn't demand that you master its gameplay to proceed! I personally don't think developers should even give players the option to skim through a game like this. You may as well just watch a Let's Play of the game.
The last time we had an optional auto fight system, it was in Final Fantasy 13 and we all know how everyone reacted to that.
I don't like the idea of Platinum doing this, but just like Final Fantasy 13, I never used any auto battle. Also it's only in easy mode so I could care less about it.
@kupo
I think if a person spends their hard earned money on the game, let them enjoy it how they see fit. No sweat off our backs. It's not how I play games, but it is useful for some, like my friend @rjejr here who struggles to jump over the first pit in Super Mario Bros without seeing a game over screen.
@kupo @banacheck But some people really enjoy the game but find the combat system too challenging for whatever reason. This doesn't completely take away the entire point of the game since, as the article says, there are still plenty of RPG elements and other things for the player to do and think about. What is the point in complaining about this feature? No one is forcing you to use it, and it just makes the game more accessible to more people, so that they can enjoy it more. Criticising a game because it has options to make certain aspects easier just sounds elitist, as if, because they couldn't cope with a certain mechanism of the game (for any manner of reason) then they shouldn't be allowed the fun of playing it at all. I'm sorry if that's not how you meant to come across at all, in which case this was all for nothing, but it seems like a pointless thing to complain about when the joy of the game could be spread to more people without impacting on your own.
@BranJ0 Yeah, I may have come off too strong there. I can see why people play on the easiest difficulty (less stressful, less time-consuming), but I would argue that it's not the best way to play.
I just think that an easy difficulty sometimes undermines the game itself. Developers like Platinum put a lot of work into the combat systems of their games (well, most of the time), and to be able to beat the game by just button-mashing (or letting the game play itself) just negates all of that work. From the player's standpoint, they don't get the experience the way it was designed to be, and there's a diminished feeling of accomplishment. I think overcoming a really difficult boss or level is an amazing feeling...to get your butt handed to you, but then hone your skills and come back with a vengeance. Just throwing in my 2 cents!
@JaxonH HAHAH, I wish there was a way to thumbs-up comments here...
@kupo
I work with a guy who's disabled and a massive gamer. He's has less fingers than most and limited use. He's never sure how a new game will affect him so this will bring him confidence to buy and a great way to be inclusive. I never knock options for other people to use. You'll never know everyones way to play.
@gingerfrog You're right, it's always better to have more options than less, especially toward accessibility. I guess my way of thinking is a little more outdated and selfish than I thought. At the end of the day, games are about fun, and it's up to player to choose the difficult that's right for them.
@banacheck Im glad those times are over. I play games on hard or normal but who am i to say everyone has to.
@kupo Why not they are paying customers to. If you want it hard play on hard mode.
It's better to have such an extra option instead of make the whole game easier just to sell more copies...
Bayonetta 2 on the Wii U had this mode where you could swipe the screen and the magic would happen almost automatically. Although I never used it, it made my wife feel like a pro gamer; she would pull off combos that otherwise she would've never seen and she could play the game at the pace and skill level that suited her.
I used to think that harder games made for better gamers, which is partly true perhaps, but it also makes for less of them. How many kids or casuals would seriously consider keep on playing Mario if it wasn't for the white invincibility leaf or buy Bayonetta 3 when they got stuck on the first fight in part 2?
I know we as PushSquare readers like to think of ourselves as some sort of secret gaming society that should be setting all of gaming's rules, but fact of the matter is that we don't make up the majority of gamers... Most people don't live games, they just wanna play them.
a lot of 'NEW' gamers are gamers for the storyline (less good movies out these days). Like an interactive Movie but better. It doesnt make sense to leave these potential new players out for the sake of an option in the game.
I'm only finished Deus Ex and to be honest, the game was a bit boring, repetative but I really enjoyed the story, especially when you complete all the side missions etc. For me an option to see the rest of the game play out as a movie on some tedious bits where I could set the controller down and enjoy the game would have been a welcome option at times. Especially when you've to trek across the city back to your base when dinner has just been put out and you've seen it all before, to stick the game on auto and watch as you eat sounds like an option that would be appealing to me and most likely enough others for developers to consider putting the option in a game. No one says you have to play it that way.
Now I know why they added automata to te title
Dont like these kinds of options myself. Minus well watch someone else play or a full walk through. You know they will exploit that just to claim they finished or get it posted up on some site first.. Indeed play how you want to, but in this scenario no ones playing now are they ? Haha
Same reaction I had to the easy mode in Star Fox Zero, great addition for folks who aren't use to these types of games, and it'll get more folks into these games. Those who moan you don't have to play on that difficulty, so don't moan cause it'll likely help sales of the game.
@kupo I actually completely agree with you in how I like to play games. There's nothing better than persevering at a particularly difficult boss or something until you manage to complete it. That's exactly what I look for in a lot of games. I think the only thing I was saying was that this doesn't apply to everyone, so there are lots of people who don't look for that in a game, but still like the look of this and want to play it for other reasons e.g. the RPG elements. If it's never forced upon you, accessibility is never a bad thing
Good for impossible bosses help you find a weakness to exploit next time.
@JaxonH I don't think I ever make it to that first pit, some flying thing always hits me. No wait, that's SMW.
Did I ever tell you after we took DKCTF out of the library my 11 year old beat that unbeatable level first try. After that we celebrated and took it back to the library, din't see any point in playing after that how he crushed it in 1 go but I could never beat it. Things were only going to get worse for me.
Beat another boss in Ni No Kuni last night, almost had to switch to Easy mode but I persevered. I really need to go shopping more before boss fights, I never have enough mana (MP is always mana to me) Game is really stingy w/ the mana.
Who do they think we are? Pussies?
[Thanks Square I will probably use this! ]
Game is so boring it plays itself.
I do hope the game is not so grindy that they added this.
Beyond that I appreciate easy modes for newcomers and people with busy lives. And @rjejr. BTW swallow your pride and let the kid play the rest of DK. He might become the next @JaxonH
If you don't want to play it can't you just watch it on youtube?
@sinalefa I'm old w/ kids, I have no pride left to swallow, he just didn't want to play it. I think the week we took that out of the library was also the week we bought Lego Dimensions. Maybe someday, but probably not.
