These are the facts that we know about the PlayStation 4 Slim: it exists, a few people have already got their hands on it, and Sony hasn't officially announced it yet. The revamped console is almost certainly going to get its official reveal at tomorrow's PlayStation Meeting, but websites and YouTube channels are already picking the machine apart to try and find out more about it. Patience is a virtue and all that.
Anyway, there's a report going around that the Slim has "serious overheating problems", and said story is starting to pick up some pace. Originating on ThisGenGaming, sources close to the publication claim that the Slim is "hot to touch after 5 minutes of gameplay", and that it gets very loud. What's more, the source also states that they could "smell burning" and were forced to shut off the machine.
Now, before everyone loses their minds, let's remember that, as mentioned above, the Slim has not yet been officially acknowledged by Sony. With leaked consoles already in the wild, it's clear that the system is releasing in the near future, but what if it's designed to work with the latest firmware update installed? What if the batch of Slims that were stolen are faulty? There are just too many unknown factors to put any real stock into this particular report - whether it turns out to be the truth or not.
In any case, you're probably going to see a few more rumours and reports floating around over the next 24 hours, so we'd recommend keeping a cool head and waiting for Sony to dish out the details before jumping to any crazy conclusions.

you always remain calm when it comes to sony failures, flatterers
My original PS4 failed, APU detached itself from the motherboard due to overheating, so wouldn't shock me if the slim does end up having some issues.
I'd always make sure I got extra warranty going forward, Argos and Amazon offer 3 years for the cost of one retail game so it's a no brainer.
@Major-Zero We can either remain calm in the face of reports that may have no basis to them or we can report that Sony's doomed forever. One's the right approach and one's completely stupid.
Looks like CEX will, be getting a few returns and be some unhappy ebay customers.
These people testing unreleased hardware unofficially, I wouldn't believe a word they say.
My PS4 slim also makes my tea for me and tidies the house overnight. I know because I've done 'tests'.
Clickbait bollocks by attention seeking idiots. Bit like that berk who payed over $1000 for No Man's Sky, just so he could be first.
Watch the language -Tasuki-
@Major-Zero How is this a failure?? The console hasn't even launched yet and this is just a rumor. Do you honestly believe Sony is about to release a console that is hot to the touch in five minutes, is louder than the current model, and smells like burning?
This publication is recommending calm because there's nothing to be concerned about. It's a rumor. About hardware that hasn't even been announced yet.
This site sticks it to Sony when they do mess up. I'm not sure where you got that from.
I dont believe it. Sony will have tested this thoroughly. Lets wait and see what happens when the console is actually out in the wild, then we can judge. Until then no point speculating
@Cron_13 I don't know about the slim but I've had issues with both PS3 & PS4, hardware failure on both consoles. Buying a PS3 slim seemed to fix mine but I don't feel buying a new console should be the answer.
I think extended warranties should be in order. No reason a gaming console should only be guaranteed/backed by manufacturer to work for 1 year.
I remember when the PS4 launched some were claiming it had faulty HDMI ports and looked what happened there, probably just a scare story that Xbox fanboys have jumped on. Besides if you buy it properly then it it'll be under warranty so you don't lose anything anyway
Appropriate reaction
If you're in the UK, have bought an expensive console brand new and haven't mistreated it then you have every right to return it to the retailer for a repair/replacement/refund (in that order) if it goes faulty at any point up to six years after purchase.
If it's within six months, then the burden of proof that the item was not faulty at the start is on the retailer. After six months and up to six years, the burden of proof is on the consumer to prove that the fault was there at the start.
This is fully part of the UK Sale Of Goods Act, now partly replaced by the Consumer Rights Act, but not many people know about it. The proper document is hideous to read, but there's a really well written document in the House Of Commons library.

I used it to very good effect with Microsoft for a faulty console, but be prepared for an argument and attempts from the retailer to fob you off to the manufacturer.
@ShogunRok Or, you could quit posting rumors and wait for facts. Then again, based on the rubbish that I've seen in the past 3 days, if you weren't posting rumors, you really wouldn't be posting ANYTHING worth reading.
Oh, and they're using old AMD tech, no doubts in my mind it will be loud, and cause overheating issues. The only way to combat that is to build a console the size of an old VCR like they did with X1.
@JimbobLink Sony tried to charge me £175 for a repair and after repeated conversations back and forth I gave up, my console was just approaching two years old.
Made more sense to just buy a new one with extended warranty, Sony's customer service in my experience is pathetically poor and I'd be interested if anyone actually had any luck enforcing the legislation.
All I know is that the people here in SA are loving this slim and 4K model already; because of the new models there are insane offers on "regular" PS4s at the moment. A big German retailer is offering 2 PS4s for about €399 and I've ordered quite a few already for some PS4less folks here.
The PS Neo is the best thing to happen to 3rd world gaming since the PS2!
@Napples with the exception of hardcore investigative journalism since when were facts the only news that should ever be printed, chill out and catch a pokemon
@Grawlog are you questioning the merit of the articles on this site?! If you are inferring that most of it of late is click bait trash with no real substance then... Oh nm...
lol ignore the internet, it doth deceive thee, now where did I leave my Sun.
@Grawlog as crazy as it sounds it could be, if its a bunch of returned units. Happens with cars / factory items / medicine all of the time. If quality control team picked up on the batch in a semi random qa test and found them to have an issue, asked them to be returned in a none organised fashion from storage centre or shop - unlike the existing supply lines as its out of the ordinary, Boom consoles have been stolen by temporary staff on a nights work. Crazy scenario but it does happen.
@Napples Well, thanks for the feedback. If you think that there's nothing worth reading on this site, though, then I suggest you stop reading it.
@Grawlog I wrote this article because the rumour is picking up speed on similar sites. I thought it was worth weighing in.
@Mr_Alejo @Major-Zero You two really need to stop or you'll get banned. I've removed all of your comments - don't want to see this happen again.
My dad works for playstation, he brought a slim home to try out, it exploded after trying to run uncharted 5. The mega texture graphics were too hardcore.
RRoD2(TM Microsoft) I don't believe it. Of course you would get the odd faulty console now and then like EVERY Tech product out there. This just sounds like when they said the PS4 had the Red light of death i.e utter nonsense
Well, if other rumors are to be believed this seems to be a 'budget' console, so I wouldn't be shocked if Sony cheaped out so to speak. But I would also wait until there are more than a few out in the wild before worrying about this. Wouldn't be shocking at all though. PS1-3 all had some sort of issues as well.
"so we'd recommend keeping a cool head and waiting for Sony to dish out the details before jumping to any crazy conclusions."
Eggsactly.
@Cron_13 Unless you bought it directly from Sony, your first port of call should have been the retailer. If you still have the faulty PS4, then you still could do this. Just bear in mind that the burden of proof will be on you to prove that it was a Day One fault.
I have used this legislation to have both an Xbox 360 and Xbox One replaced. In the case of the 360 it was replaced by Blockbuster in store after 11 months of use. The Xbox One was replaced by Microsoft after 18 months of use.
@Grawlog mine did exactly the same. It's so bloody noisy, the doom demo sends it into overdrive. Poorly designed console imo and I think this Sony obsession about having an internal power supply is proving to be a bit of an issue. Time will tell.
@Dan_ozzzy189 That Doom demo really got the fan working overtime didn't it! Stopped me from ever getting the game for fear of melting my ps4.
I'd heard some games don't apply certain settings to keep fan noise and use going into overdrive?
Played Lords of the Fallen last night, which seems ok but noisy fan reared its ugly head.
Wait, no one said "KEEP CALM and CARRY ON"? Totes missed opportunity.
This could simply be Microsoft instigating controversy on to Sony.
@FourPlay Thanks but next time you feel like insulting users, take it somewhere else. Thanks -Tasuki-
@Dan_ozzzy189
Mine did the same, I removed outer casing but didnt go the whole hog with removal of the power supply etc, and then cleaned fan blades. Looked further in and basically the heatsync was blocked. Used a toothpick to get the extra crap out and then using a bendy straw and hoover, got the rest out. quiet as a mouse now.
But it shouldn't take this amount of ingenuity to keep it running cooler, that's for sure.
Wow - do not get the hatred over such a simple article. There are rumours appearing across several sites stating that people who have got hold of PS4 slims pre-launch (and of dubious legality) are having noise and heat issues. Plausible, yes. Does it categorically mean that that Sony is about to release a literal timebomb of hot molten plastic hell? No.
The article states that issues of this severity on such a small sample of not officially released articles is not enough to panic about but the story is starting to make the rounds so be aware. If PSquare wasn't reporting on it, there would be comments complaining of that.
I'd only accept the fanboy charge if it was official and the response was, yeah sure it defo gets hot but don't panic, winter is coming and it will keep the house nice and warm...
Got my ps4 slim uncharted bundle yesterday, after an hour of play sounded like a vacuum cleaner and was extremely hot to the the touch, sending for a replacement, hope replacement is not the same, very disappointed😞😫😢
@Rob_230 I had 2 slim PlayStation 4s and both overheated its real
I had two playstation4 slims both overheated first one after 3 weeks the other 3 days now I find out its common I went back to the old style playstation 4
