Sony seems set to announce two new PlayStation 4 models at its PlayStation Meeting press conference next month, and judging by the leaks, a PS4 Slim will release imminently. In fact, the Wall Street Journal reports that the Japanese giant may have already cut production of the existing form factor in order to adjust inventory in preparation for the new arrival.
It notes that the console is out of stock at many e-tailers in Japan, with one major electronics store in Tokyo telling the publication that the item is "not in any distribution channels". We've heard that the PS4 Slim will release in mid-September, suggesting that it will deploy days after the company's 7th September press conference. As for the Neo? There's still no word on when we can expect that.

makes sense to me, it allows time for the models already in shops to sell out before the new ones are released plus also gives them time to possiby manufacture and ship enough of the new ones to meet demand
Slim still looks like cheapskate trash through.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi
Indeed it does....where are all the nice angles gone?
Hopefully the Neo is a better design.
@Neolit So many people are counting on a $250 price. I don't believe that's going to happen. Prices are now around $350 for a bundle and $300 for the Xbox One S. They're not going to suddenly lower the prices by $100, especially not when Microsoft isn't selling for less than $300.
Also, I count on the PS4 Neo to be no less than $450. Why risk profits if they already have a competitive priced console?
I hope that the Neo releases by the end of September. To me it makes most sense with the games releasing in September expected to have a 'Neo' mode on release - either built in or via a day1 patch. Games from October have to have a Neo mode built in. It seems odd that Sony are stipulating a 'day1' patch for a console that could release a month or two later - even more if some rumours are to be believed. Sony could have been a bit more lenient on the rime frame - like by the 30th September or even 31st October if the console releases in November.
I really don't like the look of the 'Slim' if that is true. I can see it releasing though for under $200 which could tempt a lot of people. I have no need of one as I have a PS4 anyway and likely to upgrade to the Neo.
Sony said they wanted to sell 20m PS4's by the end of their financial year - some going as they haven't managed an average of 20m a year so far (45m in 3 years) but by releasing a sub $200 'slim' and a Neo - something for those 45m to consider upgrading to as well as a 'budget' option for those yet to jump aboard - they could potentially sell 20m units.
@Neolit I can hardly imagine that, but we only have to wait a little longer to find out. I hope what you're saying is true for all of those who haven't bought the console already.
I agree also that I wouldn't be surprised if the Neo price drops fast not long after its release. But they have to put this product on the market in its first months as being a premium product.
Hardcore Sony fans are going to buy the product against any price. And Sony knows. Especially if it has external HDD support.
Obviously the PS4 slim will be selling at a cheaper price then the original PS4, and the PS4 Neo is set to take the £349 price tag that the original PS4 once had.
ps4 slim was always gonna arrive just a question of when - i prefer the OG model though personally
The power and eject buttons look way better, although they shouldn't be right below where you insert discs.
@GlynCR It certainly wasn't inevitable at this point in the PS4 and Sony's lifecycle. As they are about to launch PSVR and an upgraded PS4 (Neo) as well as the fact the PS4 isn't particularly Phat, it seemed unlikely that a 'Slim' will be built. Of course it could be using the 14nm chip in its GPU which may give a bit of 'space saving' - also with the cooling and power requirements but from a consumers perspective, its not a 'significant' change. Sony maybe able to produce and ship them cheaper - fitting more into a crate to keep the costs down a bit too.
@banacheck Some leaks indicate that Sony were considering 2 different Neo's but only going to produce 1. The first were the specs that leaked months ago - with a 4.2tflop GPU and Jaguar CPU upclocked. The other was a 5.5tflop GPU and a 'new' CPU too. The difference though would make a difference on Price with the 4.2 version coming in at $399 (around £350) and the more powerful one coming in at $499. According to the Leak, Sony are only considering one of these for manufacture. I have also heard a 'leak' that Developers are 'struggling' to get any significant improvements with the RAM. The 'extra' 512MB isn't that much - even with a small bandwidth increase. Also the Jaguar CPU isn't that efficient - which means more heat etc and wasn't meant to be clocked at 2.1ghz (2 was supposed to be the limit)
Its not unusual for specs to 'change' between an E3 reveal or leak and the final released product. The PS4 for example was going to have 4GB of RAM (8 x 512MB) but then swapped these for 1GB RAM chips so swapped these over - it didn't need a overhaul of the circuit board as the 1GB chips were the same size effectively and so still fitted with the design. MS also clocked the CPU and GPU faster between E3 and release.
I guess we will see exactly what Sony has to offer in a few weeks...
PS4 slim looks so bad it makes customers ill to lose weight.
@BAMozzy i ment it was gonna happen at some point i didnt say it was going to be now sony have the routine of remodelling the consoles
@blah01 i pray that it is! Hell the power light being dismissed in the slim midel aready maid it a no go for me!
ps4 s: 150
ps4 neo: 800
thats my take on this
PS4 (original) - 249
PS4 Slim - 299
PS4 NEO - 499
@GlynCR I know it was inevitable but I certainly didn't expect it this year - not with the Neo and PSVR launching. I think it may have made more sense to see how well PS4 continues to sell once the Neo launches and how well PSVR goes too. If there is still demand for the PS4 and PSVR takes off - as in has continued sales and high demand, maybe look to launch a slim PS4 in a year - maybe even do a slim/PSVR bundle as both could be cheaper by then. It seems that Sony could very well have 4 quite expensive 'systems' on the market - PS4, PS4 slim, PS4 Neo and PSVR...
