You need a PlayStation Plus subscription to play PlayStation 4 games online, however No Man's Sky will be exempt from this rule – despite it boasting some nifty Internet-based features. Speaking with Game Informer, a Sony representative confirmed the good news, noting that the subscription service "won't be a requirement, however you will need to [be] connected to the Internet for your discoveries to register with the universal atlas".
For those out of the loop, the game will allow you to name planets and wildlife that you encounter as you explore its gigantic open world. The nature of its multiplayer gameplay is still a bit ambiguous, however; we were led to believe at a preview session that players would be able to stumble into each other, but given the vastness of the game world it was unlikely to actually happen. Fortunately, we only need to wait a few weeks to find out for sure.

Cool, that's a nice touch. Been wondering if it would be possible to go to a friend's planet if they sent you the co-ordinates or something, but guessing it might not be as simple as that. Which is kinda OK by me to be honest, I like the idea of a largely solitary experience until I suddenly stumble across another human, that would be a cool experience.
Argh can't believe there's still two weeks to go...so desperate to play this!
@SegaBlueSky The problem is that, from what I understand, the game world is simply so vast that, even if you got a friend's co-ordinates, it could take you hundreds of real-world years to actually travel there.
@get2sammyb I wasn't exactly banking on being able to meet up with friends or anything, more curious if it would be possible. Honestly the fact it might not be possible just makes me think it's even cooler, if anything!
The more I hear about the game the more pointless it seems and it seems to go back to the "everything is procedural and theres billions of star systems to explore"
What exactly is the point of it being online if you are quite likely never to bump in to another player or land on their planet?
I may be a bit cynical here but I can imagine the reviews are going to be massively in praise of the game and completely ignore the many issues. Akin to Destiny and MGS V sometimes blatant disregard for their faults reported in most reviews.
I am all about the exploring and discovering planets and giving them crazy names. Space is big hoping not to bump into people just let me cruise along at my own pace.
I'm skeptical that the map will be laid out the same massive way for everyone so maybe it would never happen anyway.
And even if it did...how would you know it wasn't AI? We've seen plenty of AI one man ships so far
@solocapers What you see as faults I see as merits. The game isn't pointless, it's aimless, and that's different. I'm perfectly happy to wander around aimlessly from planet to planet without hope of ever seeing another player. If what No Man's Sky is doesn't sound appealing to you, then maybe it's just not a game for you. I'm 100% certain it's a game for me.
@NoxAeturnus Agree exactly, I know exactly what kind of game it is and don't need multiplayer.
I'm expecting this game to be a deeper version of Proteus really looking forward to getting it and having a go, but just can't see it holding my interest for long. I guess there is a chance I'll get hooked on the trading element, or the lore/need to make it to he centre. We'll see
@get2sammyb Depends on how good the warp drive you have is. I'd imagine once you've upgraded enough you could potentially spawn anywhere.
@NoxAeturnus Im well aware it doesnt sound like a game for me. I to love games where I can wander about and do my own thing. It just seems very thin on content if im being honest and I will be surprised that even though theres billions of planets to explore.. its all going to get a bit samey and dull after a short while. Its one that ill keep an eye on and hopefully be pleasantly surprised with.
Im not saying the game needs multiplayer either @Majic12 infact for the most part I prefer single player games anyway. Im merely pointing out that if its so hard to contact other players and worlds they inhabit. Whats the point in it in the first place.
@get2sammyb
As the game goes on, people will have more capable ships and will be moving towards the centre of the universe, so the chances of encounters with other players will rise.
This will be kinda cool as each player will have gotten to the centre via a different route and with a different adventure.
@blah01 True, that's a good point.
Only 2 more weeks! really doesn't seem that long considering I've been waiting for a little over a year😕
@get2sammyb
Yes, hyped up for this now, it will be epic. I'd say the developers will provide good post release support and content too. Sean Murray seems too decent not to.
@solocapers or more akin to Elite back in the 80s were set seeds of galaxies are placed into the universe to make a cohesive and fun star system to play round In.
@get2sammyb @SegaBlueSky I'm pretty sure we could set something up in the forums. Every planet we find, every sea we name, every animal we discover - we name is Push xxxxx Square or something like that to leave breadcumbs for everyone to find each other, although I may never find someone in particular I'm pretty sure a few of us registered users and the staff will be close enough near the beginning to warrant finding each other.
Also the centre of the universe will bring us all closer obviously should we get that far.
@blah01 Haha same wave length. See you at the centre if the galaxy!
I bet if random strangers do meet up they'll just try to kill each other in typical online gaming fashion.
Is @Quintumply playing the review copy yet?
From what Sean has said every player will start out at different ends of the SAME GALAXY. As we all work our way towards the center of that initial galaxy I believe running into other people may become more of a likelihood. I also think that you will receive ship upgrades closer to the center of the galaxy that will allow you to travel to all the other millions of galaxies in the game. Maybe getting to the center of the initial galaxy is just a jumping off point for all players to go fly to their own new galaxy.
@themcnoisy
Oh yes, it will probably take me months to get there.
@Majic12
Oh wow, I thought it was one galaxy/ universe, so it could be many galaxies in one universe...oh wow!
@ApostateMage Nope! I'm not necessarily handling the review, either
@Quintumply Sorry, for some reason i had it in my head that you were on the review.
Frankly i think the PS Plus requirement is stupid for any game. Overwatch is run on battlenet servers but I still have to pay! It is ridiculous. Why should I pay when others play the same game on PC for free, or better yet on my Wii U with no charge! How many times has the Nintendo Network been DDOS attacked? How much do i have to pay to play splatoon with little lag? The answer to both is Zero.
@blah01 Sean Murray called it a cohesive universe of multiple galaxies. Consisting of 18 Quintillion planets. Each system will have unique factions living within them (or none at all) for you to interact with. Pick a side in a struggle, or wipe out everyone. Learn their languages, and in turn understand their ideals. Be a pacifist trader, or just explore. There's so much to do in No Man's Sky, and I'm incredibly hyped to play it. XD
@Bananaman678 well I for one have to pay for Internet service.. So playing on PC is not actually "free".
@Bender
That sounds great, like a miniature version of our local supercluster....cool
