Life Is Strange PS4 PlayStation 4 1

It's hard to imagine a game in the past couple of decades that's more suited to this author's tastes than Life Is Strange. DONTNOD's decidedly divisive episodic adventure is like a John Green novel in gaming form, pairing the teenage mystery of Paper Towns with the heartbreaking plot threads of The Fault in Our Stars. If you're a fan of the relatively recently conceived young adult fiction genre, then you'll adore what this game's got to offer.

But even if you don't, we'd urge you to give it a try – especially seeing as its first episode will be available for free for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 from tomorrow. Even better – you won't even need a PlayStation Plus membership to download it. And we're talking about the entire episode here; Square Enix is obviously hoping that the first instalment will hook people, and convince them to give the rest of the series a spin.

The first episode is a little slow, but the series really picks up in the middle. There's more than enough in the opening act for you to get a feel for its tone, though, which is unlike anything else available on PlayStation really. We've embedded one of the songs from the soundtrack below because… Well, why not, eh?
