It's hard to imagine a game in the past couple of decades that's more suited to this author's tastes than Life Is Strange. DONTNOD's decidedly divisive episodic adventure is like a John Green novel in gaming form, pairing the teenage mystery of Paper Towns with the heartbreaking plot threads of The Fault in Our Stars. If you're a fan of the relatively recently conceived young adult fiction genre, then you'll adore what this game's got to offer.
But even if you don't, we'd urge you to give it a try – especially seeing as its first episode will be available for free for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 from tomorrow. Even better – you won't even need a PlayStation Plus membership to download it. And we're talking about the entire episode here; Square Enix is obviously hoping that the first instalment will hook people, and convince them to give the rest of the series a spin.
The first episode is a little slow, but the series really picks up in the middle. There's more than enough in the opening act for you to get a feel for its tone, though, which is unlike anything else available on PlayStation really. We've embedded one of the songs from the soundtrack below because… Well, why not, eh?

Ive already promised my 14 year old daughter I'll get this and play through with her
Already bought it and got the platinum!
Figures it would be free after I bought it, I almost hesitate to buy anything for fear it will be free eventually.
@TheBalticBull It's only episode one that's free.
Hasn't it been free since it was released? I'm sure the demo was the whole first episode.
Anyway, such a beautiful game.
@get2sammyb yes but the title is pretty misleading, until I read the article I thought the whole game was free..
Amazing game though and well worth a play!
Get ready for the feels!
Misleading title for the article.
I recently did this when Telltales' first Game of Thrones episode became free, loved it and am now waiting for the next sale when the whole thing can be bought for £4 as opposed to £20. Hopefully this will have the same hook, line and sinker effect on me!
Thought it was dull and daft, the end twist of who is? the bad person was complete crapness. I wouldn't ever though discourage anyone from playing it, it's worth a spin for free.
I bought the Collectors Edition today. It has the soundtrack and an Artbook.
Just watch the broteam stream of episodes 2-5 and save $20
Is it a game or a choose-your-own-adventure? I do ask that in the most sincere and non-offensive way, I just can't think of a similar way to ask it.
OK seems that the other episode pack is on discount. It is 13 euros now...
My friend and I Let's Played this game not too long ago. At first it was as a joke because this isn't normally the kind of game I like to play. Once Episode 2 was done I was hooked. The game is fantastic and to be honest, I'm not going to get the free first episode (we were playing my friend's copy), I fully intend to buy the physical disc at full cost to support the developers.
I really enjoy the game. Nice change off pace from the big action game.
Loved Life Is Strange, one of the best gaming surprises I've had in a while. Can't wait to find out more about Vampyr too, that sounds very cool!
Already have this one in my to play list - might be my next play as I am trying to get my wife into games!
I will try it as it has a demo then. It's not free though.
I enjoyed this except for the 'hella' annoying phrase...
Thought the last episode let the first four down a bit though...
@Mega-Gazz Well, it's a game, but it heavily focuses on narrative. It's all about the characters, how they interact with each other, and how your decisions impact the storyline.
You could look at it as a choose-your-own-adventure - there are lots of dialogue options and big, plot-shaping choices to make. It's a game that you could play multiple times to find all the optional interactions and such.
Definitely worth trying the first episode at least, but I'd say it's worth its asking price, especially as it gets really good from the end of episode 2
Is this only EU or also free in US?
I watched my girlfriend play 4 episodes of this, it was pretty interesting but not the kind of thing I'd enjoy!!
Isn't that kind of a spoiler-heavy thumbnail?
@Majic12 Episode one is free in NA as well.
