Being a game that houses infinity and beyond, you'd be forgiven for assuming that No Man's Sky will take up a hefty chunk of your PlayStation 4's hard drive, but thankfully that won't be the case. According to Hello Games' ever informative boss Sean Murray, the space sim will weigh in at only 6GB on disc, and we'd imagine that as a download, a similar figure will be on the cards.
With the title now finished and undergoing certification - which it's apparently already passed in Europe and North America - we'll no doubt be hearing more and more details as we creep closer to its August release date. All that's left to do now is hope and pray that the game turns out to be good.

I was expecting 50+ gb
6gb isnt an awfull lot of space. Unless alot of stuff is being reused
I'm guessing it's because of the algorithms they used to create the game, maybe it doesn't take up much space. 6 gb seems quite small, even if the graphics aren't the best
I would think that textures and graphics assets alone would be bigger - this makes me worried that the procedural universe won't be very varied.
+1000Gb day one patch!
Yeah im a little votherwd by this. When can we see some actually gameplay trailer for this game?
The only surprise is that anyone's surprised. The universe is procedurally generated, so the actual code is potentially quite small. I'd guess most of the 6GB is textures, sound files, etc. The original Elite had an entire galaxy in less than 64K.
Praise the suns.
I think the game randomly generates planets as you go, so that really wouldn't take up a lot of space. All the stuff is set in the game so I assume it's just randomly generated with percentages based on each texture to be placed on the planet and animals as well. Some animals and textures (walls, plants, etc etc) will have such a low percentage that you may never see them over the course of your playing time.
This game is really going to thrive on VR.
Oh thank f*ck, I've been doing maths in my head about deleting this game or that game to save around 25gb for this! So with update patches and saves etc, still under 10gb, top news!
I have no problem with this. Saves more room on my PS4.
Everything is algorithm based, even the music. If you think how small something like persona 4 golden is on the Vita then it's not a huge surprise. I was expecting more like 15 to 20 though.
I would think more gb's the better so hopefully I am very wrong or this is the biggest hyped stinker ever. I have it on preorder and hope I haven't been a deluded fool. Or it could surprise me and be a fantastic game after all. There hasn't been much gameplay revealed and probably has a reviews embargo which raises more suspicious activities.
Its hardly the visual powerhouse of most AAA games with 4k resolution, textures, shadows, lighting etc all built in (although limited down to run on Console). I can't imagine this also has cut-scenes galore either. Its stylised visuals colourful but relatively simplistic by a lot of standards. I don't think SW:BF or Doom are that big...
6GB though does seem quite small though considering that some games on last gen were a lot bigger - didn't BF3 require an 8GB install? I forget now but remember it needing a big install...
Awesome! And to think, Uncharted 4's day one patch was about 5GB!
One month to go guys
Wow certainly wasn't expecting this, I was thinking it would be around 40-50GB so this is a pleasant.
Least I haven't got to delete games to make space.
Fully expected a small size download. Most of that 6gb will be the audio files. The text code that is used for the procedural generation doesn't use much space since it is, well, text based. Ingenious really and with the game throwing away everything after you leave and only saving the things you changed, the save files won't get big either. Hats off to them.
The entire game is based upon algorithms so why would it need to be bigger? They didn't make a universe, they made an equation which does it for them, it would just need some building blocks to use. Can't wait for launch and I'm still hopeful of some vr integration down the line.
As others have said, it's because it's using procedural generation that's making the file size small. A lot of devs will tell you that cut scenes and audio make up for big file sizes, plus most other games use prebuilt textures and environments.
Saw a tweet from Sean earlier saying he was waiting for a build to upload so they can start work on first update for no mans sky...guessing its a day one update because it would be a bit worrying if it was dlc given how all way through development they have said how big the game world is going to be,I'm going to assume they meant how big the game world is from day one and not after lots of updates/dlcs
@Anguspuss probably are just with a re-colour, perhaps things like Trees, Grass and Water
Not sure why people are suprised at the file size for the game. The worlds are generated as you find them so its not anything that needs to saved into the core of the game. Means a smaller game size. Then once a world is discovered the formula/code will be used when other players visit that planet. Its a smart way to build a game of this size which potentually has nearly infinate amount of worlds to discover. Everyone should be happy less space needed on the HD and no dilema about which gae needs to be removed for it to be downloaded.
This just makes me want to wait for the reviews before I go out and buy, I've had to many games of late saying "Fantastic/Great" and then not be (Destiny/The Divison-That's just my take! Before moaners start!) so not gonna pre order and wait this time 👌🏻👍🏻
@dryrain this. In one of Sean's earlier interviews, he goes over the procedural nature of the game's design and how it has helped keep the game size down. I cannot wait to play this!
@Midzark The games industry is all marketing these days. Makes you appreciate those games more that manage to make it out without a big capaign behind them.
Nice! I hope the game really has me lost for hours.
Guys I need off topic help! On the european store, The Banner Saga 1/2 is discounted at 27 euros and it says it lasts until 13/07! Does that mean that the sale ends right on 13/07 or at midnight 14/07? I have 30 euros in the wallet and I want Banner Saga but I also want to wait and see if the new sale on wednesday brings anything good for 30 euros! Thanks
Elite on bbc micro disc image available online for free via Ian Bell (co author of Elite) is 194kb uncompressed. That's ships, world, missions, shops, fighting, landing, mining, story missions, rankings, music, sound effects etc etc.
No mans skys file in comparison is humongous!
@mcnoisey the good old days of the BBC Micro how times have changed.
@AFCC I would say until midnight on the 13th but sometimes they stay on a bit longer until they update the store. So I would buy it on or before the 13th or you could miss out.
@dryrain Thanks bro
Size genuinely isn't everything folks. Unless you're talking Monster Trucks...
File size is small but price tag certainly wont match that.
And to think launch games like Knack are like 35gb.
@Dodoo lol.
@Kidfried pretty much the whole humanity. Advertisement is more important than the content itself.
Well the game has no textures and relatively few sound files. Does it have recorded speech? If not, or if there's not much, then it wouldn't be very large. Most of the size of a game is textures and sound files, the higher quality either is, the larger it gets. The actual game code is relatively tiny.
