While we'd assumed that the industry was collectively done with remasters, it seems that there's still plenty of pent-up demand for a re-release of Demon's Souls on the PlayStation 4. And it could still happen according to director Hidetaka Miyazaki – it's just unlikely that From Software will be at the helm.
"The Dark Souls series is Bandai Namco's IP, and Demon's Souls and Bloodborne is Sony's IP," he told GameSpot. "Hence, the decision to do a remake or remastering is under their jurisdiction. For me and for From Software, I don't think we'll be involved with their happening, but it could happen through another developer."
Sony famously funded and published Demon's Souls in Japan, but passed on releasing it in Western territories. The title was eventually brought to North America by Atlus, and the rest is history. So, could the platform holder opt to remaster this classic – to make amends for old mistakes if nothing else? Stranger things have happened, but we won't be holding our breath.
