God of War PS4 PlayStation 4 1

We're going to see a new side to Kratos in God of War on PlayStation 4. The angry anti-hero has been given a second chance, but he's still struggling to keep his rage under control. According to creative director Cory Barlog – who's returning to the franchise after leading development on God of War II – he sees his godhood as a "disease", which was thrust upon him.

"He has this god side and this human side, two things that were never meant to coexist together, creating this incredible rage," Barlog told GameSpot. "In that previous era of games, he was the Hulk all of the time, 24/7, because he didn't know how to be Bruce Banner. And in this iteration, the son is teaching him how to be human, it's bringing out that closeted humanity that he stamped down for so long."

God, it sounds good, doesn't it? According to Barlog, Kratos will fail at controlling his rage time and time again, but it's picking himself up after each inevitable failure that determines the character's success. We're so happy to see God of War move in this direction, because it had got very one-note. And the way Barlog talks about it gets us even more excited it.

This could end up being the pinnacle of the franchise if the execution's there.
