We're going to see a new side to Kratos in God of War on PlayStation 4. The angry anti-hero has been given a second chance, but he's still struggling to keep his rage under control. According to creative director Cory Barlog – who's returning to the franchise after leading development on God of War II – he sees his godhood as a "disease", which was thrust upon him.
"He has this god side and this human side, two things that were never meant to coexist together, creating this incredible rage," Barlog told GameSpot. "In that previous era of games, he was the Hulk all of the time, 24/7, because he didn't know how to be Bruce Banner. And in this iteration, the son is teaching him how to be human, it's bringing out that closeted humanity that he stamped down for so long."
God, it sounds good, doesn't it? According to Barlog, Kratos will fail at controlling his rage time and time again, but it's picking himself up after each inevitable failure that determines the character's success. We're so happy to see God of War move in this direction, because it had got very one-note. And the way Barlog talks about it gets us even more excited it.
This could end up being the pinnacle of the franchise if the execution's there.

As cool as it sounds it's the over the shoulder camera angle that has me the most excited. The combat is going to feel way more up close and personal.
The son is going to die. Calling it.
God of war.kratos come out and playyyy.God of war is the best playstation franchise of all times
@playstation1995 subjectively yes. Objectively it is arguable. It is definitely one of the Top 20 IPs, where it lands in that Top 20 depends on the conditions of the list. Personally, although I'm not a massive fan, #1 would be Uncharted. My all-time favorite series is Killzone.
The trailer is nearing 8 million views on YouTube - and it doesn't look like they're paid views either.
@NomNom I love killzone also.but the ps1 era .syphon filter is my favorite franchise from the ps1 era
@get2sammyb But the game is very impressive, I always disliked God of War, the character rage never did anything to appeal to me, but after this gorgeous trailer, I'm buying all the games just to be ready for this new one. And by the way I watched the trailer 4 times!
I chose God of war as my "Game of E3" (despite it being very close). I am a fond lover of the franchise and was hoping for this reveal above all others. The new camera angle, the more mature content and the inevitable kratos hidden "ahem" scene lol. Kudos to the devs for choosing this trailer as their reveal, much better than the always obligatory hack and slash of previous iterations. I've got a lot of hype for this.
I cannot wait for God Of War the combat looks brilliant also, more brutal.
This is interested me, I got bored with gid of wars repetitive nature , pretty much the same game with slightly different stories. Skipped the last one . mebe get PlayStation now to replay it.
Kratos will be dead in the first hour, callin it!
@playstation1995 Its good, but its not right.
We all know GOW has 2 great games, Uncharted 3, Ridge Racer 4, Disgaea 5, Final fantasy 6.....
Only Dynasty Warriors has 9,675,212 great games.
Why do I want kratos to blame Odin for something so badly?
It does look good. Gonna be a nice little wait though I imagine. Just like

I'm not 100% sure what to think yet. I like the change in direction for the character as people do change over time, some especially after having kids. But I'm not sure I'm sold on the new gameplay direction. Yes, the other one was button-mashy, but it was fun. This doesn't look like God of War at all. Again, I love Naughty Dog, but we don't freaking need them in God of War. I'm interested in the game because it's God of War but the more I've thought about it, the less it's the God of War I wanted to see. This is The Last of Us featuring Kratos. The reason I'm more excited for Horizon, Gravity Rush 2 and especially Spider-Man is because it doesn't seem like they've been influenced by Sony to ape Naughty Dog. If the people at Santa Monica and Bend aren't being told to make games like this and these are their own choices, it's misguided, imo. There is such a thing as overkill.
@Fight_Teza_Fight Personally, I would like to see a mentor scenario, where the boy grows up to be a badass to take the place of Kratos. Kratos already destroyed one pantheon, let someone else take the credit.
I understand the son's presence as a character (and the story he plays in the, well, story mode) but I hope he'll be like Ellie in TLoU - mostly invisible in gameplay except for a few "watch out!" scenes here and there. I don't want him to feel like Sheva in RE5.
@Fight_Teza_Fight beat me to it lol. I bet kratos does it and blames his "disease" so goes on a rampage
@Grawlog That's fair enough I think, it was definitely the appeal of the early games and I can see why you'd still want that. But having said that, I'm the opposite haha, and I'm immediately way more interested in this than any previous GoW game. Looking amazing so far!
