One question we had following God of War's amazing demo during Sony's E3 2016 press conference this week is whether it's a continuation of the events that have taken place in previous games – or if it's just a complete reboot, with Kratos pulled into a different mythology. According to creative director Cory Barlog, however, this game picks up after the events of God of War III.
The studio's obviously keeping schtum about how things tie together, but it's safe to assume that the character's trying to settle down in this new title – and attempting to keep a lid on his rage. Barlog added that the title is not open world, but the environments are yours to explore; you can wander off the beaten path if you please, and there'll be rewards if you do so.

also christopher judge, bloody Teal'c is doing the voice now
that's AWESOME
I should really get the finger out and play the god of war games. Have them all on ps3 for years, just never got around to playing them.
@KratosMD I am very happy. I was terrified by the idea of bringing back Kratos, and especially worried that this was going to be "more of the same" in a new setting.
Santa Monica deserves massive credit - they've taken a risk, but the new direction appears to be paying off. This is currently one of my most anticipated games.
So how does huge epic boss fights work now since they've change the gameplay style or won't we be seeing them?
Its going to be interesting how God Of War picks up after God Of War 3, & if so why is it called just God Of War? Anyway i cannot wait i love God Of War & this new GOW definitely looks the part, with Kratos now trying to control his rage because he is now responsible for someone else. This cannot be his son & if you've followed GOW you Would know why, the story is definitely going to be interesting .
5 million views on YouTube already, plus the reaction in the crowd when Kratos showed his face shows GoW still carries a lot of weight. Also I think the combat will be more like Bloodborne which is fine by me.
@KratosMD I went into E3 not really caring about the next GoW game and now its right up the top of my wish list and the game that "won E3" for me.
Seemed like a sequel to me. It felt like a viking setting for sure, but once Kratos went into "spartan rage" well there really was no doubt, as no viking would have a "spartan" rage.
Son looked adopted, Kratos either killed his mom or watched her die.
I'm glad for camera control and non-open world. I like a little exploration but also like linearity and a story driven direction. This seems perfect for me. I really didn't want another GoW, was happy how 3 ended, never played Awakening, but this looks just different enough. And of course it's beautiful, I don't like brown, but gray is ok.
I hope they dont go down the path of "kid gets killed/taken, father fly's into a predictable rage, and single handedly kills everything for vengeance "
@Neolit ninja'd me by 53 seconds. I also thought during the trailer Kratos would be dead in a couple of hours as it becomes even more like the TR reboot than it already is. Though of course he won't die, only mostly dead, like the Hound in GOT, but dead enough for this game. The son could bury him, and then during the credits you could see his hand pop up from out under the pile of rocks. Or something.
@WanderingBullet Dark souls has big epic boss fights, my guess is GOW's will play out similar with the odd QTE thrown in.
God of war the best playstation franchise ever
@Neolit That is another possibility , or even kratos fighting his own (grown up) son. After the son learns kratos is the real reason his mother died.
Would love it if my dad was the God of War.
@JoeBlogs Yeah, I was wondering how the boss fights are gonna be now since the fights are probably gonna be slower and maybe less combo-based compared to previous GoWs as well.
@Bazza78 Yeah, but were the bosses in Dark Souls as massive as the ones that appeared in the previous GoW games? I don't play both, but what I do know is that GoW games always had huge bosses where you could climb on and attack them. Like JoeBlogs said, maybe they'll zoom out the camera during the bigger boss fights.
I don't like God of War or similar type of games so was not bothered or looking forward to seeing this. Fair play to the developers though, this game looked incredible and characterisation and relationship dynamic between son and father was great. The game-play seemed very far removed from what I expected - button bashing combo meter mindless mayhem - kill lots of little enemies then attack a giant boss - rinse and repeat. I am sure their will be elements of this for the fans of that style but if the trailer was typical of the game, I would certainly be very interested - this 'almost' made me want to buy the game - well done!
Still not sure if its gonna be day-one buy for me but what I like most is when they said, "This game is about Kratos teaching his son how to be a god, and the kid teaching Kratos how to be human again."
@kyleforrester87 You don't need for your dad to be the God of War if you want to go deer hunting.
I've noticed now why they remastered only GoW 3 (for a quick buck sure) because SPOILERS the story had Kratos destroy everything within Olympus but the story had a bit of a redemption arc for him with the girl Pandora and he gave up the power of hope to the world, so it does kinda make sense that he would now take someone under his wing.
@Neolit They would certainly need at least a few years gap for that boy to be any type of fighter. Maybe they can do one of those "seasons" montages where we see the sun and moon rise and set, the leaves fall, snow falls, grass grows, flowers blossom, 2 or 3 times thru. Or the quicker, they go to bed one night, fade to black, next morning the 11 year old kid is 17 w/ a goatee.
I just hope they don't go w/ what @bazza78 said, we've seen that story play out enough already.
Thank God (of War) isn't an open world, I'm really tired of "massive open world to explore" stuff. The Witcher III was perfect but for now, I want more basic and structured games.
He has Spartan Rage & the massive sword scar that he got in the previous GOW games. How could it not of been the same Kratos :/
