Ten years ago yesterday, on the 8th May 2006, Final Fantasy Versus XIII was announced for the PlayStation 3 at E3, and that's a difficult fact to wrap your head around. Versus XIII was officially transformed into Final Fantasy XV at E3 2013 - a whole seven years after its initial reveal.
Let's just take a moment to let this sink in, though: Final Fantasy Versus XIII was announced ten years ago. When we think back ten years, we revisit a time when Push Square didn't even exist, and your humble editors were still stuck in the education system. Seriously, ten bloody years! If you travelled back in time and told us that we'd be sitting here, right now, writing about the same Final Fantasy project that still isn't available on store shelves, we wouldn't believe you - it's as simple as that.
But hey, at least the saga's almost over. As long as everything goes to plan - which it better - Final Fantasy XV will release on the 30th September for PS4. Will we make it to 200 Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Final Fantasy XV related articles by then? It's possible; we're currently sitting at a ridiculous 160.
So, where were you ten years ago? Are you as baffled as we are? Try not to show your age in the comments section below.

Wow!
There's been over fifteen Assassin's Creed games released since Final Fantasy XV was first announced as Versus XIII.
10 years ago was almost my final year with PS2, I switched to 360 the year after and now I'm currently back on PS4, so I've had a chance to dabble in lots of different franchises.
2005 was all about Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King, the following year I picked up Final Fantasy XII and the PS2 carried on alongside the 360 for another year or so. I remember being terribly confused about all the 'Vs' announcements coming from Square Enix so kinda glad they went away for a bit!
E3 2005 was pretty awesome for Microsoft, that was the year they announced Final Fantasy XI coming to 360 which caught millions by surprise, including me. If memory serves correctly it turned out to be one of the greatest E3's of all time what with all the generational changes (PS3, 360 and Wii announcements were all at fever pitch back then) and shiny new graphics on show.
I was 39 back then. Still going strong!
I still play my fav Megaman 3 on my PS4 lol
At least the ride is almost over.
@FantasyMeister 49? You have 7 on me if that's the case. I'm dubious with XV tbh. Found my fat PS3 earlier in the garage, had XII in it, I now have at least 4 copies. I think it's 6. Sqeenix should be giving me money.
Feeling old is when you watched ET at the cinema as your first movie.
I started following it in 2008. Cannot believe it has taken this long and also cannot wait to play it.
@dryrain second for me, watched Snow White first. I ended up jumping up and down on the seat screaming "He's Alive, Alive!". The audience cracked up.
I was only 12 back then, just a boy starting life without a single facial hair.
10 years ago I was 19, on my way to college after taking the year off, and had been with my now wife for almost a year. Odd enough it doesn't feel that long ago. But that could be because of how fast time has gone once my daughter was born when I was 23.
I was 28, still married, and about to start my doctorate. Now I'm engaged, a professor, and 2000 miles away.
I was also pretty much handheld-only at that point. I sat out most of the last generation, so this announcement wasn't on my radar.
Maybe in another ten years I'll be telling my kids about the forthcoming FFVII remake...
Feel old+Final Fantasy XV=@rjejr
I hope it lives up to your personal hype, my friend, it has been a long wait.
10 or so years ago, I was being amazed at my 3yr old son's ability to beat SM64 and had been gaming for around 25-30 years. 10yrs at this age seems like yesterday - that was only a year before CoD4 came out for example - I can't believe its been 9yrs since that released. 2006 was the year we had Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, Gears of War, Resistance, Tomb Raider:Legend etc Saints Row, Just Cause and Dead Rising were also out this year. 10 years really?? It doesn't feel that long ago!!
@dryrain How about watching the original Star Wars as your first Movie - and no I don't mean the remasters or special editions. That was my first cinema movie (A lot better than ET )
Oh wow. This day ten years ago I was just a few days shy of graduating high school. It was probably the day of the prom or thereabouts as the kids have just had theirs two days ago, blowing up my Facebook feed with pics of it. It's hard to believe it's been ten years since THAT. I didn't start following the whole Final Fantasy Versus XIII/FFXV saga until a few years down the road. Maybe six or seven years ago. That still seems like yesterday.
I'm old!
@sinalefa I dont need FXV to feel old, I played FF7 at release and I was already in my 30's and next year is the 20th anniversary. 10 years ago means nothing to me.
I was living in a different country, studying for a degree that I was slowly losing interest in and never finished. In these 10 years, I moved across Europe, got into a new course, and graduated, spent a few years in a horrible customer service job, and for the past two years I've been working in my field in an amazing environment alongside people I never dreamed I'd ever meet.
Most importantly, I met a lovely young lady, who almost exactly a year ago, became my wife.
Don't know if FFXV can live up to that
Just think how long we'll have to wait for FF16.
to be fair the FFv13 announced back then was a very different game compare to what it became now...
I was 15/16 years old at time, first year on higschool, single, and a damn teenager.
Dear god, so much has changed...most for better.
10 year ago? I was about to go live in New Zealand for a year and I couldn't afford an Xbox 360 or PS3 so I still had my trusted PS2, GC and Nintendo DS (which made it out there with me).
The editors were still in school? Gosh darn I am getting old. Between then and now, I've lived abroad, got married, had several jobs, bought a house, had a kid, got pubes and learned how to write real good. Wonders never cease.
@dryrain Cute. My grandma's first movie was probably Disney's Snow White. Think you...and I... and the rest of us have waaaays to go before we can talk about age. Just saying. Tho yes I remember 2006 like it was yesterday. Like literally. Been thinking about this game all the time and just wondering when the heck we'll see it. And now we know. It's so freaking WEEEEIRD! Technically tho the development haven't been going on for as long as we think. Back in like 2012-2013 this was still running on PS3. So that means they switched over completely scrapping a lot of stuff only reusing designs.
