PlayStation 4 Hardware Sales 1

While the industry may be awash with rumours of iterative hardware upgrades, the PlayStation 4 is continuing to quietly chug along at an intense pace, with the platform holder confirming today that sales have now surpassed 40 million units worldwide. This means that the system is still the fastest-selling in Sony's history, outpacing the PlayStation 2.

"We are truly grateful for the enormous support from our fans and partners across the globe, which helped us achieve this significant milestone in such a short span of time," said a chuffed Andrew House in a press release. "We will strive to deliver even more exciting gaming experiences to our users, further driving the momentum and accelerating the expansion of the PS4 platform and its business this fiscal year by offering an unparalleled line-up of games, bringing our virtual reality system, PlayStation VR, to market, and providing ground-breaking features and network services."

The manufacturer expects to add a further 20 million units through 31st March, with the speculated PS4K like to carry the brunt of that. Software sales for the system are at 270.9 million units as of 22nd May, and the manufacturer expects titles like Final Fantasy XV and The Last Guardian to boost those numbers higher.

It's quite amazing how well the PS4 is doing, but it's richly deserved in our opinion. While there always complaints that can be lobbied at a console, the diversity of experiences available on the new-gen device is unmatched, and it's only going to get better as the year goes on. We can't wait to see what E3 2016 brings next month.
