People often forget that E3 for Sony typically lasts longer than the week-long convention itself, with the platform holder prone to releasing tons of information and trailers prior to the show. And it looks like it's really kicking things off right now, with The Last Guardian undergoing the full blowout treatment on IGN.
The publication has uploaded a few precious minutes of footage from the upcoming Japan Studio developed PlayStation 4 exclusive, and they will probably give you goosebumps. In the video, we see the protagonist removing a spear from Trico's back, and also cuddling the mythical creature. To complement the footage, fresh-faced director Fumito Ueda talks about the challenges of bringing the cat-bird to life, and also hints at the ambiguous nature of the animal's relationship with the boy.
We're quite simply in love with the concept; the idea of creating a meaningful relationship with an AI is both ambitious and brilliant, and we can't wait to see if the developer's successful in its aims. It's not just that, though: the game looks amazing. Sure, it's not surpassing Uncharted 4: A Thief's End in terms of image quality, but the bloomy art style of ICO is very much intact, and the animations are stunning.

Cant say I'm as interested in this as I was SOTC but still..looks great.
Sorry I know that I am in the minority but it looks rubbish still. It has a PS2 look to it, and totally looks dull.
Yup, goosebumps. Most anticipated game of 2016 for me, probably. Hoping for a release date at E3 followed by a ludicrously expensive collectors edition that I can covet.
I won't allow myself to get hyped for this game its hurt me too many times 😢SOC was and always will be my favioute PS2 game though. In fact its still has the greatest soundtrack I've ever heard and gives TLOU a run for its money in the feels department.
Agree that the hype for this title has kinda went down,......it's absence was the reason why people talked about it.
I am so worried that it is going to die at the end of the game and I am going to be reduced to a blubbering mess.
I am sure it will be an amazing game. But the graphics does look last generation. But game play always win over graphics
@RustyBullet to be fair Ico and STOC had a brilliant atmosphere to them, it looks like they've bought the same vibe right across and given it some new-gen clout.
IGN review - 7.8 Too many butterflies.
@brendon987 I really can't see the last-gen thing. All the feathers ruffling independently and stuff - I can understand why they struggled to get it running on the PS3.
@get2sammyb oh. The animal looks amazing. It all the other graphics that look last-gen.
All the times spent on AI, that's a positive in my opinion.
@brendon987 @JoeBlogs @xiofen I genuinely think it's an art direction thing. They're specifically going for the ICO look here, which had tons of bloom and a really soft colour palette.
Even the brickwork is similar.
The bird looks great, the boy looks great, but those surroundings don't look very inspiring. We've only seen this same castle, three times now. If they want to sell the gam after so many years they have to show something more...
@Kidfried All the footage we've seen so far are from the first 15 minutes or so in game. It's all the same area, so of couse it looks the the same. I'm sure they'll change things up as the game progresses.
@Octane @Kidfried I believe Shu specifically said they don't want to show too much. I think the game will all be set in the same location much like ICO and Shadow of the Colossus, but both those games had different areas with different feels to them.
@get2sammyb Exactly. I don't really mind though, I don't want to see too much before I get to play it myself anyway.
I think the graphics look fantastic. Great art style plus I'm going to be staring at those feathers more than the scenery.
Finally some more Last Guardian! The visuals look fantastic, can't wait for this game.
Hmm even with all the hype around this title, I can't get myself interested in it. Maybe because I wasn't around for all the initial attention it got x years ago. Hope they offer a demo on the ps store.
Wonder if this will be a tear jerker like Last off Us? Looks emotional. The game to bring couples together!
@xiofen There's a difference though. RIME is colourful and has cel-shaded graphics. Neither Ico nor SOTC had that kind of graphics. I doubt the PS3 would've been able to run The Last Guardian in its currect form, so I do think it's just the natural evolution of those graphics.
@xiofen While I think RIME looks very pretty, that bright, cel-shaded look isn't right at all for this game. Ueda's games have a very particular look.
While this won't push the hardware to its limits like SOTC did with the PS2, I do think the PS4 is a powerful enough platform to allow for the range of expressiveness Ueda wanted from the creature in this game.
A MASTERPIECE
The art style is amazing, guys! I am hoping the gameplay won't be a mess...
The concept sure sounds interesting, but the same is true for SotC and I don't like that game. Probably playing it for the first time in 2015 didn't help, but I didn't find it to be the masterpiece people describe it as. Okay, the concept is unique and interesting and I appreciate that, but I couldn't get past the clunky comtrols, barren land between fights and dull aesthetics (really, it doesn't have any color, just brown and gray). Oh, and the running animations is the worst I've ever seen in a game.
Having said that, I'm still curious to see how this one turns out to be.
Goosebumps? I only understand that if it's sarcasm. Cynical old me. Just looks like bits of the original footage with an enthusiastic dude talking about his baby.
@RustyBullet the whole "looks like a PS2" game thing is getting old and tired and just plain r*******
I actually bought the latest issue of EDGE today just for their big feature and interview about this game. It was the cover game as well.
@xiofen It's funny you say that about Zelda considering that last Zelda game was a 2D game (effectively) that looked like a smoothed out PS1 game and was set in the same world with the same overall map as a Zelda game from about 20 years ago. At least this isn't called "Return to Ico" where it's the same as Ico but this time you can rent different sticks.
I think the game looks great its going for a darker tone then most games these days
I'd love to play Ico again on PS4! And Siren too. Please...
For everyone saying that the graphics look last gen....ahem...have you paid any attention to the animations of Trico and the boy? NONE of those detailed animations were achievable last gen. Better yet, the ENTIRE reason the game was delayed as long as it was is because last gen consoles could not handle what this game demands.
Advanced AI, stupidly detailed animations(take a gander at those feathers as each move independently of the other and the animal) and the awesome lighting and shadow detail. I honestly believe that to many young gamers equate realistic visuals with better graphics.
Just because a game doesn't go for that realistic look does not mean that it could he made exactly as it is last gen. Ueda San never compromised on his vision and dream for this game and luckily his past successes bought him extra time and clout to develop this game the way he sees fit. Expect greatness with this title, it is surely coming.
Hm. No, not a single goosebump. The creature's snout reminds me of my German Shepherd.
@AyeHaley Completely agree mate, read my post above. I think I explain in great detail why the argument that this game looks last gen is so naive and very amateurish.
@seanobi How can you hate cats, man? Have you got a heart of stone?
@clvr Without meaning to be "that" guy, the barren landscape is pretty much the point. Also, that's a game that really starts to shine in the latter half, when you realise its "message".
God, I sound so pretentious. Nah, but you're quite right, the controls aren't great in 2016. I think that's true of a lot of PS2 games, sadly.
@get2sammyb and I didn't mean to be "that other guy" either lol
Re-reading the comment I actually sounded way harsher than I meant to, as sure I couldn't say SotC is a bad game by any means. Indeed, it's a very good game, it's just it didn't click with me though I nonetheless think the concept is genius. It's almost a puzzle game disguised as an action game, and I love that, but as I said above playing it a good decade after its release probably has hindered my judgement.
Also, you don't sound pretentious at all; actually I'm pleased to see a kind of "that guy" that doesn't sound like I've offended them personally but instead replies in a thoughtful, kind manner
TAKE MY MONEY!!
F*cking yes. I'm seriously excited for this. I have a feeling we're going to see quite a bit at E3. And I think Sony might open with it again. Bring it on!
the game seems like it's going to be an RPG, but I doubt it is. with that being said, meh don't care, next please. I was never really hyped about this game to begin with, but one of the biggest downfalls in gaming is when a game takes so damn long that it makes you go "Really?"
