'Tis the season for game conventions, alright! While it may be E3 2016 that's approaching fastest, the main graphic has been revealed for this year's Tokyo Game Show, which is set to run from 15th September through 18th September. Illustrated by Ippei Gyoubu, the theme for 2016's art seems to centre on changing technology, hence the virtual reality headset.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Japan-based convention, which is always a milestone worth celebrating. And while the show has dwindled in relevance over the years, you should expect Sony to have a gigantic booth as per usual. We wonder what it will have on display this time… The Last Guardian, please!

Is that an NX controller she's holding over her forehead?
TGS or bust for NX. They can't wait much longer than mid-Sept to announce a console they already announced is launching in March 2017. Man, that sentence sounds as screwed up as Ntinedo.
I guess there will be a lot of hands on PSVR kits there a month before release. And it's 2 weeks before FFXV so I suppose that will put in an appearance. Thankfully NMS will release before that, an entire game show w/o NMS, it will be like the ifrst time in 3 years that's happened.
Oh, great graphic, though I'm a little confused by the 1UP logo since that site shut down 3 years ago.
E3 always holds more appeal to me. I much prefer 'western' style gaming and as E3 arrives before Tokyo, its usually the place where new games get revealed first. E3 usually also gives us an idea of the next year in gaming and a glimpse at things further into the future first.
By the time TGS arrives, the gaming releases are picking up for the holiday season and I am more excited by upcoming releases. The games that appeal are generally already known about and its just rehashing E3's and Gamescom announcements/presentations.
@rjejr Isn't that the NX controller in her right hand?? Maybe the box over her eyes and that controller is the NX?? and the portable in her left pocket, the new handheld??/
@BAMozzy The right hand has the new Xbox 1.5 controller. You may be right about MH (the since debunked 3DS successor) in her left hip holster.
@rjejr I think the '1up' is meant to be more of a generic term than a reference to that specific site.
And hey, maybe the entire body suit is the new NX controller!?
@rjejr I doubt it will be the new Xbox controller - not after all the R&D on the Elite and the praise Xbox controllers get in general - its why it hasn't really changed in years.. like Sony's controller!
It looks 'crazy' enough to be something Nintendo would design and the rumour that it is going to be something different - a hybrid system with the headset adds some of that 'portability' - not needing a TV.
JAPAN!!! I love Japanese games, MUCH more than western ones.
@rjer @BAMozzy Thought its suppose to be a VR headset (what she's holding over her forehead).
@BAMozzy I'v never liked the Xbox controllers, always seemed too big and clunky to me, and black. I think MS could use a splash of color. I do like the Hololens gray though, with a bit of red.
@WanderingBullet Well yeah, obviously it's a VR headset, but where's the fun in that? And it looks like it has shoulder buttons on top. And it's almost th eshape of some of the funky 3D printer mock-up NX controllers.
One can only dream. Well as a Ntinedo fan one can only dream, as a Sony fan one gets actual news.
@WanderingBullet Of course it could be a VR headset (maybe the NX will have VR) but it could also just be a screen - It doesn't actually say VR on it. I guess with all VR set to be the next big thing and released this year, its easy to assume that a box over the eyes is purely a VR headset.
@rjejr Having big hands, I have always preferred the Xbox controllers. I never liked the DS3 or earlier PS controllers and found them uncomfortable. The more bulbous hand holds and angle of the triggers though make the DS4 far more comfortable and usable over longer periods. The Xbox controllers haven't always been black either - they were white when the 360 launched and have had many custom colours/designs - my favourites were the GoW3 and Tomb Raider designs on the 360. The DS4 is very 'black' - the standard one. White gets dirty very quickly too. In terms of 'size' the DS4 and XB1 controllers are very similar - virtually identical. Personally I also prefer having a battery compartment - you can still get rechargeable packs and both batteries and the rechargeable packs last longer than the rechargeable controllers. Rechargeable batteries have a limit to how many times they can be charged etc so if they stop holding that charge, you either have to play wired or buy a new controller - more expensive than just a rechargeable pack!
Each to their own of course but I prefer the asymmetrical thumb layout too as my left thumb sits perfectly over the stick and as that rarely comes off (unlike the right which often comes off to press the buttons), I find this more comfortable for longer sessions. I don't have anywhere near the same cramping issues and aching hands with the DS4 - mainly because of the better grip, but I still have to give the XB controller the edge in overall comfort but that margin is now very close. My Elite XB1 controller is by far the best controller I have ever owned though...
@rjer @BAMozzy Can't be shoulder buttons since there are no lines across to separate them from the accessory. Plus she's already holding a controller with the other hand which I might add doesn't seem practical at all.
These are obviously just something the artist(s) came up with that doesn't reflect on how the actual product will look like. Which I think it's cool, since its keeps the consumers guessing.
@WanderingBullet Of course the artwork could have no relevance at all to any product. It can't be seen to be favouring one over another. Its more likely that these are unrelated to any specific manufacturer but enough of a representation to give people an idea of what the show is likely to contain. The controller (for example) representing console gaming as it has similar aspects to other controllers - twin sticks, 4 coloured buttons etc. The headset representing VR etc. Its interesting to see Space Invaders on the right arm and Tetris on the Left as that, along with 1up, are part of gaming history...
How did the coca cola company get 7up included in the graphic? Conniving megacorporations.
It's VR on her head is it not...
