Do you know what this generation lacks? Honest to God side-scrolling brawlers like Final Fight and Streets of Rage. Fortunately, it looks like Dungeon Punks may be here to plug the gap – a pizza parlour arcade-inspired beat-'em-up with a tidy art direction and some role-playing mechanics sprinkled on top.
"We wanted to make a game that has the interesting tactical play you can get from a great fighter, mixed with the joy of trouncing tons of bad guys with devastating magic," Hyper Awesome Entertainment's Dan Goldstein explained. "And we didn't want to require crazy reflexes or hidden secret joystick moves just to pull off exciting combos."
He continued: "So we did something unusual: we took some of the game mechanics from the great tag team fighters like X-Men vs. Street Fighter and shoved them into our brawler. Then we gave every character a bunch of really cool tactical magical spells and a special unique dodge move, creating a play space that's deep, challenging, and a straight-up ton of fun."
It does look alright, and we like the idea of different characters fusing their attacks in order to create some crazy combos. You'll be able to toggle between all of the fighters in single player, or have a buddy hop in via jump-in/jump-out co-op. The downside is that the animations don't seem to measure up to the sprites yet. Oh, and that awful Scottish (?) accent in the trailer has got to go!

Oh was that a Scottish accent..?hmm
Looks like fun,but not sure if I'd pay for it..maybe if they did a remake or port of Streets of Rage 2 THEN I'd be interested..(As long as they left the Kangaroo in it)
Saying that this has a "tidy" art direction is the biggest lie you've ever written, Samuel Thomas Barker.
The art is cool.
The animation is not.
Looks like a cheap flash player game or something. Which is a shame because, some of the characters seem to include a werewolf and a lizardman. The D&D love is strong on this one. But it looks so stiff and lifeless.
@ShogunRok I like the sprites, it's the animations that are the problem.
@get2sammyb Excuse me but do you even have an art degree?
@ShogunRok
I do. I'm a graphic artist. The art is fine. The animation sucks balls.
@Nickolaidas Don't worry, I'm just teasing Sammy!
@Nickolaidas "But it looks so stiff and lifeless." This 100%. I think this game could use a short delay while they polish the animations up a LOT.
@Nickolaidas @ShogunRok Inside joke!
Meh, I love the accent. Don't care if it sounds Scottish enough or not.
This looks like a bad redone version of Dragon's Crown.
@Nefarious haha that was also my thought when I saw the trailer a low budget DragonsCrown
