Final Fantasy XV 15 PS4 PlayStation 4 1

Stocks in Kleenex have today soared, as Square Enix has declared its intention to turn Final Fantasy XV into a true tear-jerker. Speaking in the latest issue of Game Informer magazine, director Hajime Tabata explained that he wants the long overdue role-playing game to "make as many people cry as possible". Last year's demo already had the desired effect on this author; within seconds of hearing the voice acting, your host broke down like Chris Crocker chopping an onion.

"You're spending so many hours playing the game, so when I finish a game and it ends on a sour note and it doesn't move me, it gets me disappointed," he said. "At least make me cry or give me some emotion! I want to give a moving ending for the consumers who invest so much time."

To be fair to the veteran, it sounds like his real ambition is to create an ending that resonates with its audience, which is a good goal to have. Personally, we'll be satisfied if the overarching plot doesn't devolve into anime guff; low standards, we know – but after the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy, our scepticism seems well placed. Seriously, watch this corking conversation between Vanille and Hope – and weep!
