It seems that the leak about Final Fantasy XV getting a free demo was indeed true. Out tonight in North America - and very soon in Europe, we assume - the Platinum Demo will see you take control of a young Noctis in a gameplay segment that won't appear in the main release.
In many ways, this download seems to be a kind of tech demo, showing off the title's engine, its combat, and its various systems. It also seems reasonably robust, and will be totally free to download on PlayStation 4.
What's more, completing the demo will unlock Carbuncle as a summon in Final Fantasy XV when it launches later this year. Basically, play through the whole demo, and you'll get some free DLC.
If all goes to plan, we'll have a play around with this ourselves in the near future and write up some impressions, but until then, take a look at the trailer and tell us if you'll be giving it a try in the comments section below.

Those squeaky hammers look like too much fun,I'm such a big kid,seriously.
Im going to let me nephews play the demo and see if I can get them into Final Fantasy.
Demo Will Be Available For Free
Since when people start paying for Demo... haha
@whywai88 Since Episode Duscae. And Gran Turismo 5 Prologue.
Since MGS: Ground Zeroes?
So do I still need the episode duscae save or what?
I like the demo, but one gripe is the frame rate, it's rather poor, the game is nowhere near even 30fps, in combat scenes! unacceptable. I know its a demo , but unless they improve the FPS in the final game i'll pass.
As it stands the game looks great in screenshots, but kinda ugly in motion. Performance issues arent game breaking and they have six months before final release ,fingers crossed they lock it at 30fps
The demo is really wacky! Anyway:
@themcnoisy it has nothing to do with the previous demo its a separate thing.
Downloading it now!
Just finished it I really liked it!
I like this new trend of SE giving lengthy demos out fo free, that that transfer to the main game.
Well done Square. You have earned your place as one of my favorite developers again (even though you still anger me sometimes)
I defeated that last boss a couple of times by mainly just hacking away at it, so I was wondering if there were any other cool ways of defeating it. Also, I found it a bit difficult to dodge its attack at times.
I played it, it felt like Knack. The music, as always in FF games, was fantastic.
-Hey, you know what will be fun?
-What?
-If we make them attack with circle, and dodge with square!
-Lolz!
Seriously though, decent enough demo, although controls feel a bit stiff, combat doesn't flow great and frame rate is a bit of a dump fest. Very intrigued with the world/setting, just hope it will get a good level of polish before final release.
@SkanetWasTaken Hahaha I thought the same! The demo reveal felt a bit like "The last Guardian ....is now Kingdom Hearts 3,02!"
I downloaded it last night, I'll play it over the weekend.
Guys you are scaring me and I can't play till this evening. Knack? O_O
I seriously don't know if I like or hate the combat so far.
...Its so simple? It looks great though! but I would sacrifice some effects for a higher framerate, I'm ok with 30FPS but the demo is below that most of the time.
@Feena Knack. In this Platinum demo I was doing a bit of platforming to collect crystals and mashing the square button to beat enemies up. To be fair though, Knack's combat felt a little deeper.
@ApostateMage thanks, at least now I am mentally prepared!
Should I bother with episode duece or just play this? Got type 0 ages ago never got around to playing either. Just curious how different/fun are each demo before I dive in. Limited play time sucks to plan my gaming out lol
@DopeSamurai how long is it?
Wish I could download it; PS Network's giving me hell, lol
@Nono18 Both are really good
Its live in UK now, just downloading it!!
Woohoo! Can't wait to get home to get this! @Nono18 I would say it's worth it play both, especially since you already have it.
@Nicomg5 It's short I beat it in like two hours
Can Noctis change into any other creatures aside from the crocodile and the giraffe?
@ApostateMage It felt more like Kingdom Hearts to me. lol
@WanderingBullet Aye, it did.
I won't be getting FFXV. I always thought the combat, although fast and glamorous, looked very basic and after playing this demo I was right not to expect anything deeper that button mashing/holding. I took down the end boss by X buttoning his face until he dropped. Not for me, I'm afraid.
Ignoring things like the nauseating camera, awful audio effects and very clunky character movement which could be put down to it being pre-release code, I find myself very disappointed and once again it just doesn't feel like a FF game.
I've just spent nearly an hour running around a very strange dreamscape with an inflatable mallet, collecting crystals like Sonic with rings, stepping on seemingly pointless pads to change the weather (or become a truck!?!) while getting gradually irate at the BigEaredFoxicorn (that's what I named mine) every time it squeaked loudly and sent a text to my in-game phone. It's all a bit abstract and surreal but even with seamless transition into battles, which do try to be fluid, there's an awkwardness that already makes the game feel dated.
Mostly, it seems like the game doesn't really know what it's supposed to be and I think FF has lost its identity in the pursuit of modernisation.
Combat is awful, it's a little bit like a unrefined a crap version of bloodborne , or dark souls. Except faster.
Enjoyed it, better than the previous demo actually. It's not FF as we know it but it's looking like it'll be a great game in its own right.
Feelings were mixed, story is intriguing with the Alice In Wonderland vibe it was going for but graphically needs quite a bit of polishing and the combat was very clunky, neither warping or dodging seemed to be reliable.
Just played and it kinda weirded me out...it's like Night into Dreams meets Kingdom Hearts. The locations are amazing but the frame rate is choppy. The music is amazing but the actual gameplay still doesn't convince me...
Any way I am glad I played episode Duscae before this! I get what they are trying to do but it is so misleading...
@MikLSP I totally understand you! But this is a strange thing...all that weirdness won't be in the game. It's just a dream. I am more worried about the battle system....
@Feena agreed about battle system , its just doesn't feel like You're landing critical strikes that huge sword feels like its made of rubber lol. Warp and dodge also feel loose. At no point in the final battle did i feel i could dodge his attack and land a critical from behind.
@Feena @Bazza78
I thought it looked as though you would collect multiple little guardians to put on his bed side, implying that there would be regular dream sections.
Either way, the combat is quite poor yes. It's lost all the tactical elements of true FF games and failed to capture any meaningful action that feels like you're in control.
Something like God of War executes action based battles perfectly and really feels like you are influencing your success with the way you fight, FFXV fails miserably on that front.
Perhaps most worrying is that this is meant to be the "finished battle system".
I just finished the demo... it felt very different than Duscae. I wonder if this is a bad move on Square's part. Overall I get the idea and I'm not hating it, but I'm concerned about the combat, it's very clunky atm.
Mmm overall I'm not that impressed. Combat is terrible in my opinion and the camera just felt a bit awkward. I'm going to play more tonight in the hope it gets better. I'm beginning to wonder whether they shouldn't have put this strange "demo that isn't really a demo" out in the first place.
