After a long spell of rumours that Ubisoft would be resting mega franchise Assassin's Creed this year, the company has confirmed that this will indeed be the case. "This year, we also are stepping back and re-examining the Assassin's Creed franchise. As a result, we've decided that there will not be a new Assassin's Creed game in 2016," the publisher posted on its official blog.

It continues: "Since the release of Assassin's Creed Unity, we've learned a lot based on your feedback. We've also updated our development processes and recommitted to making Assassin's Creed a premier open-world franchise. We're taking this year to evolve the game mechanics and to make sure we're delivering on the promise of Assassin's Creed offering unique and memorable gameplay experiences that make history everyone's playground."

At first glance, it certainly sounds like Ubisoft is letting the series take a breather following the criticism that both Assassin's Creed Unity and Assassin's Creed Syndicate received at launch in 2014 and 2015 respectively. Indeed, regular readers will already know that we're very much burned out on the property at this point, so in that sense, we reckon that a year off is probably for the best.

So, what's the French publisher going to push out near the end of 2016 instead of the next instalment in its stabby sandbox series? Whispers indicate that it'll be Watch Dogs 2, but would you be happy with that? Sheathe your hidden blade in the comments section below.
