We've always known that Dragon Quest Builders would be a huge deal in its native Japan. Anything to do with Square Enix's now legendary role-playing series tends to sell ridiculously well in the Land of the Rising Sun, and this latest spin-off is no different. The Vita version of the title topped the software charts, selling through 178,016 copies, while the PlayStation 4 edition came in second, selling 141,369 copies. Taking into account the PlayStation 3 version, which entered in fourth with 53,154 units, Builders has opened with total sales of 372,539 copies. Yowza.
Of course, the title's huge success appears to have had a direct impact on hardware sales, too. Vita climbed into first place, selling 45,144 units, while PS4 crept up in second, with numbers jumping to 32,557. Pretty decent boosts for both consoles - especially Sony's handheld - but it'll be interesting to see if these increased sales can be sustained over the course of the next couple of months, with several new releases due out in that time.

I'm glad the Vita/PS4 are doing well in Japan, means more Japanese support for the systems! The Exclusive Japanese games are the one of the main reasons why I prefer PS4 over the XB1!
Oh wow, Square Enix is already considering multiplayer if they decide to make a sequel for Dragon Quest Builders.
Nice to see that the VITA topped the hardware charts as well. Wonder how many bought the Metal Slime Edition - the D-pad on it looks really cool!
I wonder if this DQ will end up localized. Maybe with these numbers they will think about it.
What's far more impressive is near %100 increase in sales for the Xboxone, anyone have any theories on why there has been such a steep increase this week, I'm pretty gobsmacked.
Vita is number 1 yes now time to celebrate.Xbox one made a world record in sales 92.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi That week-on-week growth is pretty impressive.
No idea what made those extra 40 people walk into a store last week to buy an X1 though. Maybe the stores had sold out of PS4's?
@Dodoo or someone had performed an obscene act on the PS4 display which is so often the case in the gruesome modern era we live in
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi These people are monsters.
"Not a massive boost for either console"
Vita sales tripled, 15k to 45k, and it outsold all home consoles combined - PS4, PS3, Wii U and X1. All that for a console that was declared dead 2 years ago:

Where's the love?
Nice for the Vita. I am starting to think that the next Nintendo portable system (or hybrid) might actually extend Vita's life indirectly...if the graphic output s not too different I can see Japanese developers publishing titles on both systems.
@rjejr Its Pachter..... He's always wrong. He's about as good at predictions as I am at Rocket League.
@themcnoisy OK, you got me w/ Pacter, so here are some non-Pacher articles over the past 2 years pertaining to the Vita's death.

People lose their freaking minds when I say it, I've even had somebody troll me on this website because of it but the Vita is dead everywehere but Japan. I don't like saying that because imo the Vita is awesome but just like Wii U is irrelevant everywhere but Japan, so is the Vita.
@rjejr Sony will not abandon the vita in the west because of third parties. People have been rehashing the death of the vita but it is steady but slowly picking up here in the west and that is not going to change anytime soon.. Vita is going nowhere!
@SiameseHappyDays "slowly picking up here in the west"
Picking up enough that there will be a Vita 2 or PSP 3? W/ Sony spending so much money on PSVR I can't see them releasing another handheld ever.
Well that's not entirely true, I think PS6 could be a handheld w/ TV out as I think by then handhelds will be powerful enough to pull it off. PS5 will still be a home console if only for Kingdom Hearts 3.
@rjejr We will just see how this year pans out regarding the vita and see what Sony decides. Either way, we still have Assassin's Creed Chronicles Trilogy and World Of Final Fantasy for this system. If this clickable ps vita analog sticks article is said to be true then I will be surprised by those standards.
Way to go ps vita. Its a long road to the top. The ps4 been really strong for awhile. Sony must be in japanese heaven
@Gamer83 Its got a niche following around the world and is perfect for holidays and bursts of ridge racer. But I know what your saying.
I made the point ages ago that nobody knows what a vita is outside of gaming communities, just like the wii u. Where as the ps4, 3ds and x1 are known about in casual or none gaming circles. On holiday about 18 months ago the 20 year old barman thought my vita was a psp, then the bloke taking my glass asked me to move my psp. I don't think that's changed at all.
@rjejr That's actually crazy - I have no idea why I wrote "not massive for either console". Totally meant to be positive. I'm clearly just incredibly jaded!
I've fixed it anyway - probably a good job you pointed it out!
@themcnoisy
The Vita definitely has a passionate niche following. I'm part of it, I have more games on Vita than I do for even PS2, which is my favorite system (home console or portable) of all-time.
@themcnoisy yep. People mistake my ps vita for a psp too. Or other are like wow, that really good graphics is it a new mini ipad
@brendon987 Haha, I would send those people to wash their mouths out. New IPad.... Urghhh.
On another point I have only just seen this;
3.[Wii U] Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash (Nintendo, 01/28/16) – 55,331 (New)
@get2sammyb I thought tennis games don't sell?
@themcnoisy This one's got Mario on the box and still did extremely poorly in the West.
Not sure what Sony can do to revived the sales of the VITA in the West but in Japan and Asia the simple answer would be Monster Hunter. Over 3 million units sold so far. That's just insane.
Or even better, Pokemon games cause those would sell like hot cakes. I think Pokemon X and Y sold over 14 millions units.
