We're not sure that many of you expected to see actual gameplay from Final Fantasy VII Remake at the PlayStation Experience, but that's what we got. Given the recent history of the Final Fantasy saga and Square Enix's supposed inability to develop any new titles within a reasonable amount of time, we had a horrible gut feeling that we wouldn't be seeing the game again until much later down the line, but thankfully, the Japanese publisher seems to understand how the company's output - or lack thereof - has been perceived over the last few years.
Posting on the official Square Enix blog, director Yoshinori Kitase alludes to the fact that the release is further into development than some may have thought. "Just like when we revealed the announcement trailer at E3 earlier this year, we like surprising you," he writes.
Clearly aware of the impatience surrounding projects such as Final Fantasy XV, Kitase goes on to say that "One thing that we wanted to be clear about during [the PlayStation Experience] to accompany the new trailer was the scale of this project. We wanted to tell you this now and not in the future so that you'd share our vision for what we want to deliver."
"We've seen everyone's comments and reactions to the news that FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE will be a multi-part series and many have speculated correctly as to the reason why we have made this decision," he continues. "If we were to try to fit everything from the original into one remake instalment, we would have to cut various parts and create a condensed version of FINAL FANTASY VII. We knew none of you would have wanted that," Kitase explains, hinting that the remake will have a lot of depth to it.
He concludes: "Going beyond the scale and depth of the world, narrative and gameplay from the original to deliver something that feels familiar yet new. As I said before, we like delivering surprises."
So, it sounds as though Final Fantasy VII Remake - or at least the first part of it - isn't as far away as you may have thought. Do you have confidence in what Kitase is saying here, or are you sceptical of the project upon hearing that the game will be broken up into chunks? Try not to bloody your buster sword in the comments section below.

It's still Square. I'm not skeptical that the game is breaking up into parts, but because they're still kinda hit and miss. I guess it's good if the game is coming sooner than expected, but hopefully this remake is something they'll actually do right.
This sounds potentially amazing and I personally cannot wait to play it. I'm having a lot of fun with the original now it's on PS4 and I can see why they have taken this decision. To build this into a fully 3d world the game would have to be enormous so this makes perfect sense.
What's worth remembering is FFVII had a load of spin offs, if there thinking of melding them into the game as a whole then it makes more sense.
Going by what he's saying, it sounds like it'll be brilliant.
It will be brilliant.. But I know there's gonna be alot of impatience between episodes..
I'm fine with it being episodic, excited even cuz it does open doors way.. I wonder when the first part will be released.. Hoping for Xmas lol now that WILL be a HUUUGE surprise..
"Just like when we revealed the announcement trailer at E3 earlier this year, we like surprising you,"
Any other surprise other than that? No. The cupboards bare. Just shut up SE staff and make some games. Thanks for ff7 hd, ff10 hd, life is strange and the deus ex game a few years ago are all great - carry on in that fashion and we are all good. Just stop talking guff - we know a surprise when we see one and talk of split releases, micro transactions and dlc isn't really what a surprise is - its unfortunately expected these days.
@themcnoisy In that case, let's hope the "surprise" is that none of the crap leaks in, eh?
They could do it multiple disks if the content is that big like the original FF games where they had 3-4 disks. But i doubt this will happen as they will make more money doing it in separate releases like FF XIII.
3 parts makes sense, I know people will think its nickel and dining but after playing FF7 I would rather see them do the game justice and cut parts from it.
No one wants to miss girl Cloud. EVER.
edit: lol dining? damn you autocorrect.
Doesnt hurt that they can squeeze out a few extra dollars out of fans. Also, I made a bet with my friend that they'd have a dlc option to save Aeris. Knowing SE, there is a good chance it could happen, if the price is right.
Eh I'll wait for the complete edition, go ahead try to spoil the game for me.
Yeah it's fine for em to squeeze a few more ££ outta the fan's, it's ok because that's what everybody else does so it's fiiiiine no problem actualy screw it i'll give em my house and car then maybe they will give me a map and a couple of sticker's in the case Still looking forward to it and let's face it we are used to being ripped off now anyway, just another money making ploy. Never mind i'm sure it'll be amazing i'll be buying it regardless (luckily I can afford it) even though it's just a remaster with turn based combat replaced. I wonder if FFXV is going to be condensed or will it be another £150+ game?
I think a lot of people forget the that FFVII came on 3 discs and had pre-rendered backgrounds. When you really think about just the enviroments in midgar are a challange to reproduce i can understand why they are doing this and they understand that this game is important to them. I don't think they are trying to fleece us they are trying to make the best game tgey can and have convinced the bosses to invest in multiple FFVII games before the first one has even released.
How are the levels gona work tho. Will they carry over with each game? Dont fancy leveking from 1 each game, or leveling materia each time
and i agree who wants a watered down version with better graphics, that wouldn't be a proper remake
besides it's not like multi part RPG games with one overarching story are a new thing, just look at Mass Effect, Shenmue or Final Fantasy XIII
i think the problem here was all the big game sites saying it was "Episodic" when Square NEVER used those words as click bait to get people to read their articles which had little to no info in them, which just spreads misinformation (i'm looking at you Gamespot)
Episodic makes you think of games like "The Walking Dead" or "Back to the Future" you know TellTale games where FFVII will be FULL RPG GAMES so we are talking 40+ hours of game play EACH and that is fine by me
@SuperSilverback i imagine it might be a system like Mass Effect where once you reach the end of the game you make a special game save that holds all the information for the next game such as your levels, settings, equipment ETC, ETC which you would load up when starting the next part
"If we were to try to fit everything from the original into one remake instalment, we would have to cut various parts and create a condensed version of FINAL FANTASY VII."
Why? Just remake the game as it is. There is no reason to have to condense anything.
@PorllM The game and world is going to need to feel bigger than the PS1 version though, but I don't just mean padding for the sake of padding. I've played FF7 more times than I can remember but I'm replaying it again now and really trying to see how certain sections would play out in a modern version. For example, you can literally speed through the first visit to Costa Del Sol in a minute and a half, as it's made up of 4-5 prerendered back drops and a conversation with Hojo on the beach (if you don't sleep in the inn, that is, because then he's not even there when you wake up).
Even this section alone, in a remake, I'd expect to be expanded upon with more NPC's to talk to, story details to uncover and streets/buildings to visit.
So if they are wanting to build a bigger more believable world and spread it over multiple games I'd be fine with that.
@carlos82
I have a feeling that they will some how incorporate the story of Crisis Core and dirge of cereberus in this game to make it a complete story. If this is the case, SE do what you got to do.
One series of games I never see mentioned but can really give an idea of how this plays out is White Knight Chronicles. Though the games are called WKC and WKC2 it really is just 1 game cut in half. WKC doesn't end, and WKC2 doesnt begin, they just flow one into the other. And I'm pretty sure your save from the first game went into the 2nd. Though I'm not sure as I only bought 2 so it was all 1 game for me. But I think that's the model.
The proof is in the pudding. I'm going in with a gladsome mind and I hope it will be rewarded.
@GraveLordXD Yea that's true. I hate that idea also. Furious they are doing this to the new Hitman also which is one of my favorite franchises..
