If we were Sony, we wouldn't have publicised this. Almost two years after the system's launch, you'll be able to buy non-stock avatars from the PlayStation 4 version of the PlayStation Store. Embarrassingly, these icons could only be purchased from the PlayStation 3 edition of the PlayStation Store previously. Absolutely mental, eh?
The good thing about this is that it was recently mentioned on a PlayStation survey, alongside the wishlist feature – which has also been partially implemented. This hopefully means that the platform holder's working through the list, with folders and online statuses also on the itinerary. Oh, and if you're not sure which avatar to pick – read this.

Two years... For avatars! Two years!
So is it actual Avatars like the XB360 had or just profile pictures? If its the latter its not really needed. You can just use your smart phone and have any pic you want via the PlayStation app on your phone. I've been using a Fallout 4 picture for a while and it didn't cost me a penny.
oh yay fugly avatars! custom themes please.
and an option for large (default) ps home screen icons or small icons etc.
@WARDIE. Yeah thats what I did. Guess with pic I chose
Hint: Dragon Zord.
I think Sony is missibg a big opportunity for Avatars with the characters they own. I still have yet to see a really cool Gravity Rush avatar unless I jist missed it.
I like avatars but seriously this is sh*t that should've been there day one. F'ing ridiculous it took this long. I better not see anybody giving Sony credit for this.
I'll stick with my Nathan Drake avatar, thanks.
Yay
Not want I wanted to hear. Not what we wanted. We wanted them for free. Sony are making enough money off the games. The eco system that we play them in should be free. Are they going to charge for changing the interface colours as well.
Avatars are our identity within that eco system so they should also be free, otherwise rich gamers get the fancy identity and poor players get the bog standard identity. Paying for avatars is not an equal inclusive for all closed gaming system hosted by Sony. MS win that one.
@justerthought If certain people are poor gamers how would they afford a PS4 and games lol
Am I the only that feels that game avatars should be free?
I won't lose sleep over this.
I'm cool with my chicken avatar. However, I always considered avatars more 3-D character types, and not a picture. I actually just call a picture an icon, i.e. my icon is King Boo! To me a Mii or whatever xbox call their characters are more inline with what i think of as avatars, but that is just splitting hairs.
Took over 700 days to make something so basic available...
Charging for avatars is a bit much when you're already making a fortune from ps4 sales. Smacks of more dlc greed.
Wow this isn't news at all.. What a waste of time flicking thorough this article was..
I used to say I'd pay £1 to upload my own avatar but I'm just not assed now..
@WARDIE yeah but your custom profile picture doesn't appear in games, that's only your avatar as far as I understand it. Be better if they'd actually given us the ability to use our profile pictures in games.
Not that i care in the slightest about all this! Lol.
Progress in our days is amazingly fast.
Meh
I'm happy with my Red Lantern pic
@Pipr it's not new they've been on PS3 for ages was the same on 360 too (I imagine it's still the same but I no longer have an Xbox)
Ha! Imagine paying real money for that 'I [heart] Girl Gamers' avatar. Just incredible.
I'm never changing my Jak and Daxter avatar!!!
I choose you pikachu
i just have it set to my Facboook pic anyway so i can have whatever avatar i want
plus i never actually use a picture of myself on facebook anyway it's normally just an Anime or game character
@WARDIE Profile pictures. Sorry, I didn't think of the Xbox 360 thing - should have been more clear.
@Cron_13 depends on your privacy settings you can have your custom one appear if you want too
@FullbringIchigo ah ok, good to know thanks
@WanderingBullet unlocked in game! I had a boss avatar on xbox unlocked through Halo Reach. I also took a picture of it mid animation and used the snap as my avatar pic. So that's the way to go.
@get2sammyb the Xbox avatars are actually really good, exactly like mii (the wii avatars I hope that's right). I'm not expecting anything like that on ps4. Which is a shame.
Just got my PS4 and I hate most of those. Now they want us to pay for new ones? Then I hope they are way more interesting.
My thoughts exactly, Get2sammyb. Lol...
It's about time
@Pipr I am not sure that you actually understand how this works.
Consider the phrase: "Why does Pepsi charge for their drinks, when Walmart already makes so much money on Shampoo." Any reasonable person would immediately point out that Pepsi and Walmart are not the same company and therefor the fact that Walmart makes money on Shampoo has absolutely no relevance to Pepsi. Yet thats exactly what you are asking with: "Why does [Company X] charge for their [avatars], when [Sony] already makes so much money on [the PS4]".
Company X can sometimes be Sony (just like Walmart has store brand products) but often times is not. Its no different than it is with games.
@themcnoisy Don't own an XBox or a Facebook account so I can't do none of those. :/
Hurrah, more Populus Media spams every week...
I wonder what are the requirements to be able to sell our own-designed avatars on the PSN...
And... we still can't buy avatars on Vita, right?
They remind me of the crowd signs in WWE games. Terrible.
I looked over the PS4 themes, there one that's $3 and it's a static white background that says "PRO GAMER", or the same thing except it says "GIRL GAMER" and there was a third the same except it said "HARDCORE GAMER" i doubt avatars will be as great as these themes.
I'll just stick with my bog-standard lemming.
@justerthought If you 25 cents makes you bankrupt i would say don't buy a 350 dollar console. Don't wanna be mean but that are my thoughts and you have some free to.
@slampog i like the one you are using now on pushsquare looks cool.
