We were rather critical of PlayStation 4 firmware update v3.00 in our feature earlier today, but one positive that appears to be doing the rounds is that the system software refresh has boosted download speeds. Slow downloads have been a constant criticism on Sony's new-gen console of late, perhaps suggesting that it was a bug rather than something more sinister on the network end.
A gaggle of posters have collated on NeoGAF to discuss the sudden improvement in performance, while we've been hearing similar conversations anecdotally here at Push Square Towers. We will admit that this is all very much grapevine stuff until someone conducts a more scientific test, but there are surely too many feeling the benefits of the update for this to be a placebo effect.
Have you noticed any improvements to your download speeds since nabbing the PS4's latest firmware? Stare at a progress bar in the comments section below.

wait people were complaing with PS4 downloads...have they ever played an Xbox One?
@viciousarcanum It's been a pretty constant source of criticism for a while, though not everyone has been affected.
I dunno, I've just been downloading Driveclub PS Plus Edition and it's 30GB or so of updates and application data and it's a hell of a lot slower than a download on anything else connected to my wifi.
Never had any real issues myself, but then I'm on Virgin's 60MB.
It still took forever to download the Rainbow Six Siege Beta. And that's only 6.7 GB. But it's probably just my internet's fault
I've 15Mbs download speed (which for some I'm sure is still incredibly slow, but hey, I've lived with less than 2Mbs for most of my life, 15Mbs is practically a godsend) and it takes about a day or two to download 50 gigabytes of data. On PS4? A week, if I'm even remotely lucky. I've already tried changing DNS settings and attempted pretty much every solution I could find on the internet but nothing seems to speed up download times.
Hopefully the apparent increase of download speed is true. I'm gonna attempt to download something first thing tomorrow afternoon whenever I get the chance
I posted on the other topic last night, download speeds that had been 500kb a sec from 2.01 till now have been a solid 7-10mb a sec since yesterday. My shareplay i found out though, has yet to fix itself.
I haven't download anything since but there seemed to be a bug in the system. I remember downloading add ons for Arkham Knight and it taking a couple of hours for about 2gb of data, yet when I bought Until Dawn initially progress appeared slow so I watched TV for a bit and switched back less than an hour later to find it already installed
I think the download speed has really improved, for me atleast, i noticed this while i was downloading destiny last night.
Fast as I'm on 130Mbps connection, always use a wired connection dudes, its twice the speed if WiFi.... No handshake malarkey..
@Paranoimia
I've got the same fiber optic cable and I'm wired to it, yet my ps4 is much slower than the rest of my devices. Even over WiFi, I hope this will rectify my problem. Have you checked the speed you are getting?
I havn't tried it, but if it has this is the best thing to come out of the update!
I noticed the Uncharted Demo downloaded in about an hour last night for me. That is 7.5GB file. So yeah I noticed a big difference.
It's been better for me as well, but I never really had any major problems.
@gingerfrog Yup. It's not as fast as, say, my PC... but it's still usually between 40 and 50Mbps, depending on the file.
never had any issues with PS4 downloads. Have 50mb Virgin and always got what I expected from downloading on PS4. Seems to download give or take as fast as my PC can. Havent tried since 3.0 however I assume if everyone else is getting better I doubt mine will get any worse.
My download speeds are on average 80-100MB/s, but my PS4 never downloads anywhere near that fast. I haven't downloaded anything since the patch, but when I do I'll definitely keep an eye on it and will report back to this then-completely-dead thread.
Feel like it will go back to normal after a few days, was the same with messages before they actually fixed them. They'd work great for a couple of days after a update ad then would go back to being terribly slow.
I was one of the unfortunate people that had the glitchy downloading problem after the 2.01 update, I had to constantly pause and unpause the downloads to get them to ramp up in speed, but sometimes even then it would yo yo up and down.
I have a full fiber optic connection that has less than 1% signal loss and my download speed is 35Mb per second and my download speed before the 2.01 update was at a full 4 Mega Bytes per second after the 2.01 it would do only kilobytes until I did the pause unpause trick, but now I'm getting 4 Mega Bytes a second again with no tricks, after the 3.00 update!
I'm definitely happy!
@RicksReflection I had the same problems, I ussually had slow downloads, only solution was to pause and resume the download, after some tries, it went faster for a while and than slowed down again. Once I had 2 downloads at the same time, one was 12 GB and it took 15 mins while the other one was only 1.2 GB and took more then an hour. I am currently downlaod one of around 5 GB and it sais 10 mins, so it is looking good now. Very happy too!
off topic: when are they gonna fix these annoying discover messages? Everytime I boot up my PS4, I get the same message about the power options!
Do you think they'll ever sort out the notifications only appearing in the top left hand corner? The 360 would make them pop in different areas of the screen so it wouldn't block the HUD.
@viciousarcanum sorry but the xbox one speeds for downloading games is way faster , i am a huge digital only gamer and Xbox has that corner down even still after this update . Example 8 gig running still on ps4 another hour until its done , on x1 16 gig game both started at same time already finished. The install times are different they are utter junk on Xbox up to a hour still for some games for a disk install.
I had to redownload and reinstall FFXIV yesterday...it took 17 hours.
(and I super fast internet)
Download speeds were horrible on my ps3 not surprised being the whole system is slow and laggy. Ps4 had better download speeds but nothing to show I have fios 50/50, I will monitor the speeds to see if the update improved it.
@get2sammyb Is the download speeds just for in Firmware downloads? or does it affect games like Final Fantasy XIV?
Well, the better download speed will help me, as I live in the middle of nowhere with horrible internet signal and speeds. Other than that, it's just another download to add to my Hard drive being taken away more. Does anyone know where to get a good HD for the PS4 that's higher than a 1.5TB (that's the highest one that I found).
I haven't put this to the test yet. I have a 38Mbish connection. It seems to vary wildly how quickly things download from game to game. Popular games seem to be quite slow but the recent firmware update downloaded very quickly. My PS3 on the other hand is quite consistent in its download speed but neither make the most of my connection. The xbox one in the living room doesn't download particularly fast, especially with game updates.
Myself, the Sony servers have been pish since the PS3. Always had slow downloads, whether WiFi or wired. The PS4 (and Vita) have been no different. I've used O2 BB (then Sky, who were crap however you look at it). Now I'm on fibre and it's no different.
I download things so quickly, I never notice. I am on a 1Gb connection at home though, so thats probably why, lol.
