Looking lush

If you can hear a kind of crackling noise, that's the sound of hell freezing over. The Witness was announced for the PlayStation 4 alongside the console itself, but almost three years later, it's finally ready for release. Braid developer Jonathan Blow has taken to the PlayStation Blog to confirm that the Myst-ical first-person puzzler will bring a bit of colour to the new-gen console from 26th January.

"We'll be very happy to get the game out into the world, because we've been working on it a long time," explained a rather honest Blow. "We originally thought that The Witness would be coming out toward the end of the PS4 launch window, but... There's just been a lot to do. I think that when the game is in your hands, you'll find it to be intricate and deep, and also unlike anything else that you have played."

According to the luminary, there's a good 80 or so hours of gameplay here, so it's not your typical blink-and-you'll-miss-it indie game. It's certainly not your average pixel art escapade either, as the trailer embedded below demonstrates. You'll see colourful gardens, terrifying caverns, and even the open seas. While it all looks impressive, though, we're yet to be convinced by the puzzles, which appear to revolve around drawing lines.

Then again, we suppose that Braid looked pretty darn basic in trailers, but it turned out to be a bit of a game design master class. As such, we're certainly not ruling this one out yet. In fact, we can't wait to learn more in the lead up to launch.
