Japan's biggest game of 2016 may be one that you least expect, as Dragon Quest Builders is shaping up to be every inch the commercial smash. Square Enix's block breaking role-playing release promises to give Minecraft's occasionally mindless brick busting a bit of structure – while also augmenting the entire experience with something commonly referred to as art direction.
The game will release on 28th January in Japan across all three flagship PlayStation formats, with a Western release looking extremely likely a little down the line. As alluded, we expect this game to blow up in its home nation – and it may yet surprise overseas as well. Best of all, while it may be a somewhat shameless clone at heart, we reckon that it's shaping up surprisingly nicely.

Shameless ripoff or not, I am more likely to play this then I ever would be to play Minecraft.
@NomNom See, this is how I feel too. I do like Minecraft, but it lacks structure for me. This game appears to have the gameplay loop that makes Minecraft addictive, but it's adding a bit of purpose and a much better art style.
I so can't wait for this!! Try as I might, Minecraft is ok, but doesn't really draw me in. But this, so can't wait!!
Yeah. I'm not interested in Minecraft but I'd play this.
@NomNom Same with me. This may sound shallow, but I could never get past the aesthetic in Minecraft. I get that it's an indie game form an (originally) small studio, and I get why it looks the way it does, but I just didn't like looking at it, and when a game takes that much time investment, it'd better be pleasing on the eyes. This looks gorgeous though! I think I could really get into it.
I had an okay time playing Minecraft for three days straight, but this looks definitely more interesting.
[edit]: Does anyone know if there will be a single player campaign?
Hmm didn't expect a Wind Waker-Craft game on ps4, probably pretty damn good and deep when you get into the details, given quite alot of screentime too
