Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is designed to be played how you want to, which means that both covert operations and all-out combat are viable strategies. However, if you want to get the best ranks in the game – which grant you crucial GMP currency bonuses – then you'll need to be aware of the optimal way to play. Unsurprisingly, given the series' history, a lot of this depends on stealth, but staying undercover isn't the only thing that you'll need to achieve in order to secure an all-important S-rank.

Mission Tasks
Much like the Assassin's Creed games, objectives in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain are now multifaceted. While you'll always have a handful of main jobs to complete, the game sprinkles in Mission Tasks to keep you on your toes. These vary depending on the quest, but they range from extracting supporting targets all the way through to interrogating troops and recovering key items. The main thing about these side-objectives is that they're entirely optional, but they will give you enormous score bonuses which will help you to achieve your S-rank.
Speed
If you're taking on Mission Tasks as well, it can be difficult to get through objectives fast, but speed is a major source of points. In most cases you'll probably need to replay missions in order to get that all-important S-rank, so use your experience from previous playthroughs to scout out guard placements and learn the optimal route through the mission area. Practice and you'll be completing entire objectives in record time, which will help you to get that all-important S-rank.
Stay Undercover
If you complete a mission without guards ever even knowing that you've been in the area, then there's an enormous 100,000 points up for grabs – and even more if you keep their blood off your hands, too. Needless to say, then, that staying undercover is absolutely essential if you want to earn maximum points. It is possible to draw attention and still score highly, but to get the very best points tallies you'll want to get by unnoticed.
Check Your Equipment and Don't Take Damage
Taking damage and alerting enemies actually takes points off your total, so to continue from the previous point, you're going to want to stay as clandestine as possible. Don't think that cheating and wearing the Chicken Hat will get you through, though, as donning this clucker will limit your rank to an A at best. The same is true of some other marked items, such as the Infinity Bandana. And using the helicopter's attack protocol is also unwise. Of course, there's no harm experimenting with these if you're still learning the mission – just remember to ditch them for your perfect attempt.

Not being an imbecile is definitely one of the best ways to get an S rank. Twice now I've screwed myself because I wasn't paying attention to what I was doing and got caught sneaking into the base.
I feel like this metal gear makes me feel like I'm good at sneaking. It's very approachable and very complex. I think it's the open world aspect, but I never really felt like I could avoid all enemies on a particular mission before, but I've done it two or three times now.
I love the options it gives and if things go south and I have to fight my way out, there are still chances to do okay without an extreme drop. I think the lowest I've gotten so far is a "b". I got a d on my first ground zeroes attempt. Replaying that has made me a lot better for this game.
The worst rank I've gotten so far is C, and it's because I panicked when I got inside the base in Episode 7 and didn't want to alert the guards, and because I ran out of tranquilizer darts, so I started capping guards in the head when I bumped into them. I might have to replay that sometime.... Haha. Every other ranking I've gotten was a couple A's and the rest B, which I'm fine with personally.
I'm so bad at this game. But I'm still having a great time
Mostly B's for me so far mainly because I like taking my time and I'm not against some bloodshed when I mess up. Got all S ranks on Ground Zero so may come back to them after finishing. But for now happy running around looking like the ps one Snake whilst Kojima does my R&D 😃
I'm missing out I guess, bah, will need to pick it up soon.
I started racking up the S ranks in Peace Walker after a while so hopefully I'll be okay at this when I eventually get it.
@ztpayne7 I totally agree. this game just makes you feel awesome, which is a very impressive feat.
Just an FYI, those optional objectives arent displayed in the mission goals until completed.
So its often not as simple as just doing them.
They cone up as ??? to begin with.
Tried to S rank the prologue. Made stupid moves the first time. Restarted mission just before the end, and then death by helicopter. From that point on, I have decided not to bother the first time through. A lot of the emphasis is placed on time. With such a great world to explore, a trophy isn't worth rushing this game. Maybe a second playthough will be needed, or my dream, to have a separate mission select screen after the game has ended!
I used to think I was good at Metal Gear Solid before Ground Zeroes came out. Now, the AI is a lot smarter than me. Sad.
@ToOGoodOfAPlaya only on the first run. Once you beat a mission once, all of the tasks are revealed in the mission selection menu.
@SteveButler2210 Thats true.
Just thought it was worth mentioning, at least for the first run.
@Shellcore - Realised everything I said remedies itself later on. Fantastic game. S ranked prologue. Now time to get that man on fire objective checked off!
