August is well and truly over, and the latest NPD report confirms that the PlayStation 4 was the best selling box in the United States yet again. Sony's console outsold the competition in both the hardware and software departments, with Madden NFL 16 unsurprisingly touching down at the top of the latter list.
Despite all of this, overall industry spend at retail was down by two per cent year-over-year, netting just $548 million in total. Hardware sales dipped by the same margin, but software slipped the heaviest – from $231.3 million during the same period last year to just $207.9 million this time around. Until Dawn clearly didn't have the same appeal as The Last of Us Remastered, which was Sony's big release of summer 2014.
Still, the Supermassive Games developed schlocky horror smash performed surprisingly well, finishing up in seventh position in the software charts. Considering we were expecting the title to flop hard here at Push Square Towers, that's not bad at all. It did fail to outsell ever green franchises such as Minecraft and Grand Theft Auto V, but that's nothing to be ashamed of all things considered.
Interestingly, the eighth best selling game of the month was the Call of Duty: Black Ops Combo Pack for last-gen consoles, which presumably enjoyed a boost on the back of the Black Ops III beta. Sony will have its eyes fixed on another Activision property for now, though, as it readies its exclusive Destiny: The Taken King bundle for US store shelves. We can't see anything other than a PS4 victory in September, but things should get tight again in October – unless the Japanese giant has a price drop up its sleeve.

Minecraft just won't stop selling.
@Splat it went out of the top ten a while back. For 1 whole week!
I say it almost every week - but who the devil us still buying it?
@themcnoisy I'm convinced that it's a case of multiple copies in some instances. My nephew for instance "lost" his disc on the weekend, and ended up snagging another. The thought of losing a game fills me with dread, but considering he's only 9 I'm willing to bet a large number of young 'uns have probably been in similar circumstances.
@AhabSpampurse to be fair my 360 has been sat in my sons room for 1 year. In that time both pads, the disc drive and power button have broke. Kids hay who would have them?
Some guys from America I was talking to earlier were telling me how in Gamestop, they tend to prioritise the Xbone. They'll have one wall of the store with Xbone stuff, the other wall will be split between everything else.
Is this just some kind of paid prioritising MS are getting Gamestop to do? Why would a store stock about 2 or 3 times the amount of a product that is selling far worse than the other one? I've noticed this in other places, like online shops placing Xbox One above PS4 in their category list. They're not doing it alphabetically, they're not doing it in order of popularity and thus what their customers are more likely to want. It just seems odd to me.
Scratchy minecraft discs
That's pretty great for until dawn considering it had like five days compared to some of the other ones.
@Matroska there was a recorded conversation doing the rounds awhile back, a guy called a gamestop store and spoke to an employee about ps4 and xbone, the employee was really offhand about ps4 and was saying that the console doesnt sell well but she was really pushing xbone, in the end the guy got the employee to kind of admit that gamestop employees were getting a bonus for selling xbone...not sure how genuine it was, the conversation might still be knocking around online somewhere... Here in uk(in my hometown anyway) Game seem to favour xbone, the ps4 display is quite small with stock on the shelves all cramped up...not that i buy stuff from Game, its awful
