With a PlayStation 4 version of Rise of the Tomb Raider confirmed for 2016, we suppose that we should start covering it like any other game. And this latest footage from Gamescom 2015 is worth talking about, as it shows heroine Lara Croft embroiled in a variety of sticky situations. Get your mind out of the gutter, we don't mean like that.
The demo starts with a car chase, and quickly escalates into some Uncharted-esque platforming. The environmental puzzles look pretty simple and we're not keen on the facial animations at all, but as a companion to Naughty Dog's work in the action adventure genre, we must say that this looks pretty darn good.
It's just a shame that we're going to have to wait so long to play it, as we reckon that it would make a great warm-up for the forthcoming Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. To its credit, publisher Square Enix has said that it understands PlayStation fans' frustration, and has hinted that the third entry in the title's current trilogy will not be exclusive to any console.

This really isn't a tomb raider game at all, I'll keep an open mind but it's just really disappointing
@Anchorsam_9 It's an Uncharted game. I like Uncharted personally.
@get2sammyb So do I, but if I wanted to play an Uncharted game I'd play Uncharted. I just wish Tomb Raider was more what it was originally like, with all the T-Rexes and giant spiders and exploration and puzzles. I've never cared about lara's character and I never will, I just want to explore tombs like the old games. This game could surprise me, but if it tries to be a more story-driven Uncharted, I'll stick to Uncharted
@Anchorsam_9 @get2sammyb Uncharted with breasts. Ain't that ironic, considering what everyone said about "Dude Raider" when it was first revealed. XD
I'm gonna wait on this game. It's not a priority, especially since I haven't played the reboot yet.
The old Tomb Raider games became outdated a long time ago and as such they had to modernise it. So what if its more like Uncharted these days. Uncharted has proven that games like this need to be brought into the 21th century.
I for one loved the last Tomb Raider as I found the last versions boring and outdated. Games have to move with the times. I thought they did a great origin story with the last game and this one looks even better.
Now I just have to decide which console to get it for. XB1 or wait another year to play it on PS4.
"we suppose that we should start covering it like any other game"
i'm sorry, i don't recall a time you didn't cover the game since it's announcement
@viciousarcanum You can't recall a time something happened if it didn't happen, bro. Rule 1.
So after this game bombs do you think the 3rd game will actually happen?
@NaughtyOttsel22 It ain't gunna bomb is it, unless it's a turd that is. The vast, vast majority of people arn't remotely interested in the politics of the video games industry and will buy it if it is both reviewed well and marketed well. And sometimes if only the later. Plus I dread to think how much they earned giving a years exclusivity to MS but I'd say a third instalment is a sure thing!
I am really looking forward to playing this in November. I loved the reboot but always felt it was lacking in 'Tomb Raiding' and as soon as I finished that game I hoped it would do something like this so its a no-brainer for me. Of all the games out this year, this is the one 'story' I want to play most.
I loved the reboot, so this is a must buy for me, just as I'm buying Uncharted 4 at launched. Don't see why you can't enjoy both.
I don't really have a problem with the facial animations. You know what I do have a problem with? Lara's face!! Not that there's anything wrong with it per se, but this is like her third face in the reboot so far. It's a tad off putting...
@kyleforrester87 Screwing over your long time fans is a terrible move, hope it bites them.
yeah her face has changed so many times, like who is lara?! Anyway, the game looks very epic and I'm looking forward to playing this, hopefully we'll get a better insight on her background and stuff like that
@Sir_JBizzle The facial animations look wrong to me. They don't fit her face properly.
@NaughtyOttsel22 Sadly it wont. People will whine and complain still that Xbox One will get it first but in the end PS4 owners will buy it. Besides why punish yourself from a game you want to play just cause of stupid company politics?
@Tasuki I won't be buying it, I was flip flopping ever since the PS4 announcement was confirmed but nah, I'm not supporting a franchise that effectively has scoffed in the face of the fans that made it big.
@get2sammyb looking at it again, I can see what you mean, (which now I can't unsee... Thanks! Haha) it's probably too far along in development to fix it. I think I didn't see it the first go around because I'm hung up on how they've changed her appearance yet again, sigh
@NaughtyOttsel22 Obviously they haven't scoffed anyone since it's still coming to PS4.
@Tasuki After Xbox fanboys have entirely spoiled it and with not worthwhile upgrades, so no they scoffed right in the classic TR fans faces.
@NaughtyOttsel22 How will Xbox fanboys spoil it? Just don't watch any videos, or read anything about it. That's easy enough.
Again with the completely new face? Why keep changing it? Pick one, and leave it already. Also, she has some experience in these situations now, so why is she still portrayed as a scared, defenseless woman? She has a constant expression of fear and worry on her face. I know it's still in development, so I hope they tweak details like this.
@Tasuki Not when you check forums and IGN it isn't, eitherway I'm done with this series.
@WARDIE
Completely agree, sometimes you have to change with the times. I really liked Tomb Raider Legend and Underworld, but to be honest, after playing the latter, it was clear the series needed an overhaul. After playing Uncharted 2 in 2009, it was more than obvious if Tomb Raider wanted to stay relevant that some changes were needed. As much as I like the new direction though, the lack of actual tomb raiding and the fact that the tombs were all optional was a bit of a downside about the otherwise excellent reboot. They're saying that isn't the case this time, that there is more tomb raiding but it's still unclear if there's enough of it. Fortunately the wait isn't too much longer until we find out.
@kyleforrester87 I think he just means because it's stuck on the Xbone, a console with a relatively small install base (similar to the Vita or Wii U which are both considered failures, though of course have been out for longer) and the fact that the last TR games sold way better on Sony machines. TR also seems to be a lot bigger in Europe than NA, another strike against its temporarily exclusive host which is far more popular in NA.
I don't think it'll bomb but I do expect a pretty muted response to it. I mean, just statistically the 2013 game sold about 1.8 million on 360 - a console with over 8 times the install base of the Xbone. Also nearly half of those sales were in Europe, a place that's now ignoring the Xbone way more than it did the 360.
Sales wise it's in trouble this holiday, there's no question about that. Even if it were also releasing on PS4, it's coming out the same day as Fallout 4, and it's obvious which game more people are looking forward to.
@viciousarcanum
You came in with the snark before I could. That title though....
The lighting looks gorgeous in this, no matter what console it's on.
Where is the actual tomb raiding? Will there be any tomb raiding?
My only problem with reboot is not enough challenge.
@Jazzer94 That video is an example of Tomb Raiding. They obviously cut a lot out as they didn't want to spoil it by showing all the puzzles or what the Tomb holds but its still one of the Tombs.
Whilst sales may show that the reboot sold more on the PS it only accounts for 'physical' sales and not 'digital'. Its difficult to ascertain exactly which console brand had the biggest sales overall but I doubt it will be significantly different. I can believe it sold more on the PS4 because of 'user base' but in terms of %, it could seem like less - for example it may have sold to 10% of all PS4 owners but 20% of all XB1 owners. I also believe this game is due out on XB360 too so it does have a big user base to sell to.
I am in the fortunate position of owning both a PS4 and XB1 so can take full advantage of any exclusivity deal. I don't agree with them at all but I also have no intention of letting politics get in the way of my enjoyment. As a result I will buy this in November and games like CoD & SW:BF for PS4 because of the 3rd Party deals.
I can totally understand why those with a PS are upset but at least its coming to PS4 after a year. Its not like Street Fighter 5 which has been on both consoles and now is a PS4 exclusive. This is another long standing franchise. Tomb Raider didn't start out as a PS exclusive although it has been in the past because of Sony doing what MS has done (to a slightly lesser degree now as its timed). As I have said I really disagree with 3rd party exclusivity deals regardless of whether its timed or not, whether its just DLC or main game, whether its extra game play or items - its still harmful to the 'gamers' even if it may benefit the developers/publishers financially.
The reboot of Tomb Raider, despite critical acclaim, wasn't that profitable initially. It didn't sell enough copies to turn a profit for many months after launch - I believe it was 9 months later. Crystal Dynamix may have felt that they couldn't go bigger and better without financial assistance and for all we know they could have approached Sony first but because of Uncharted were unwilling to invest.
I know the reboot itself wasn't very much like a traditional Tomb Raider game but I do think it was a good 'prequel' and certainly left me wanting the next step in Laras evolution as a 'Tomb Raider'. From what I have seen so far, this is the 'Story' I am most looking forward to this upcoming 4th quarter. Other games that are due out (such as CoD:BO3 and SW:BF) I am looking forward to for other reasons (such as MP and/or co-op) and having played Uncharted 1-3 and Gears of War previously, those campaigns are not 'new' to me.
That car crash is so stiff xD
Also, many scorpions just vanish in that "tunel" scene... (I'm picky today)
The game seems like the first one with 0 improvements, but that's fine, the first one was cool!
ROTTR definitely looks more interactive and considerably harder than the reboot which I'm looking forward too, but about her being scared and stuff, that should be seen in a way that lara is more realistic, and for us to connect tot he storyline we have to relate to her, and by doing so she has to convey human emotions like we would! she has to be scared yet willing and brave, and that's what being human is! making it more than just a game is crucial
@BAMozzy My comment wasn't serious I was just piggy backing the trend of complaining, should have put kappa.
