Star Wars: Battlefront PlayStation 4 PS4 1

Not even EA Games can resist empire interference: the first details pertaining to the hotly anticipated Star Wars: Battlefront have leaked out hours ahead of its full PlayStation 4 unveiling – courtesy of an Associated Press report. The write-up – which confirms the 17th November release date revealed yesterday – outlines the footage that we're about to see, including its multiplayer mode.

"In a demonstration of the game's multiplayer mode, a team of jetpack-equipped rebels were shown carving their way through the woodsy Endor while Stormtroopers charged at them on foot, on speeders and within walkers, including a hulking AT-AT war machine," the publication cites, adding that shoot-outs will host up to 40 players at a time.

The report continues: "Other locales teased in game footage included the snowy Hoth, sandy Tatooine, and gooey Sullust, a lava-spewing planet referenced in 1983's Return of the Jedi, as well as many Star Wars games and novels, but rarely ever seen." As rumoured earlier in the year, you'll also be able to take to the field as iconic characters, such as Darth Vader and Boba Fett.

"You can storm in as the Dark Lord himself," design director Niklas Fegraeus supposedly told Associated Press. "You can wield a lightsaber. You can Force choke the rebel scum, which is fun. Basically, you are the boss of the battle. This means that you, as Vader, can lead your team to victory – if you play well."

Of course, the action will also take place in the skies, with TIE Fighters, X-Wings, and, excitingly, the Millennium Falcon all viable vehicles. "We wanted it to feel authentic to this universe," executive producer Patrick Bach added. "There's a wide range of vehicles that we wanted to realise. The difficulty with a game is that they need to be balanced with the troops on the ground."

The report concludes that a free expansion will be available prior to the launch of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which will allow you to experience the Battle of Jakku – a conflict that's mentioned in the new flick. We'll bring you all of the news from the Star Wars Celebration unveiling later today. Don't forget to join us for the livestream.
