Final Fantasy XI PS2 PlayStation 2

Believe it or not, there are still people out there rocking a DualShock 2 and a PlayStation 2 network adapter. While Sony's creaky appliance has enjoyed a long and prosperous life due to its enviable catalogue of quality software, there are still a significant number of people who keep the ageing appliance hooked up in order to play Final Fantasy XI – the ambitious MMO which first launched on the Japanese giant's system all the way back in 2002.

But over a decade later, time is almost up on the old-school adventure. "We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to those who have enjoyed Final Fantasy XI on [the PS2] and to those who have assisted us in bringing Vana'diel to you," a spokesperson said. The servers will be shut down in March 2016, meaning that you've still got time to bring your spiky haired avatar out of retirement for one final hurrah. There'll be various events and content added over the course of the year to help you to celebrate.

It does mark the end of an era for both the game and perhaps the PS2 itself, as Seekers of the Adoulin, the title's most recent expansion pack, represented one of the system's last major retail releases in Japan.
