ToeJam & Earl PS4 PlayStation 4

Well, this is the Kickstarter campaign that you've all been waiting for: ToeJam & Earl is making a comeback. Doki-Doki Universe developer Greg Johnson teased some kind of sequel earlier in the year, but it's now being crowdfunded. The franchise – which is not actually owned by original publisher SEGA – has been on hiatus for over a decade, but this marks a return to the property's roots.

ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove is currently in production for the PC, but while there's no PlayStation 4 version officially announced yet, the campaign makes it explicitly clear that it will be coming to Sony's system eventually. But what guise will the release adopt? Well, it looks like the developer's going for the roguelike format of the original, but this time there'll be persistent unlocks that you'll be able to carry between runs.

The pixelated look of the first game has also been ditched in favour of a fusion of sprites and polygons. Characters comprise flat objects on 3D environments, and while it's far from finished at this stage, we quite like the idea. The studio's asking for $400,000 to make the PC version happen, but while that sounds like a lot, it's already raised a quarter of the required total. In other words, you can pretty much bank on this happening.

There are some pretty cool rewards, too, including key rings, mugs, hoodies, and action figures. You can donate through here, but we've included the project's bizarre pitch video below. There's also a totally jammin' animated clip which fans will want to watch. Will you be contributing to this campaign like a cool dude, or are you going to be a total doofus? Jam with us in the comments section below.
