Sign it, seal it, and stick our stamp of approval on it: Game of the Year is finally over. We've spent the past few days polling your opinion on the best that PlayStation had to offer in 2014, and while there's been much anger pointed at the absence of DriveClub and Assassin's Creed Unity in our shortlist – we couldn't include those titles on principle, folks – you've come up with a similar selection of software to us. Perhaps we're not so insane, after all?
Incredibly, almost 200 of you turned up to vote, and your picks were cast across over 25 different titles. Heck, even Dynasty Warriors Gundam Reborn got the nod from someone, which is sure to make associate editor Robert Ramsey feel all warm and fuzzy when he breaks away from Diablo III's iron grip and gives this article a read. Without further ado, then, let's put a big fat period at the end of this obligatory preamble, and recap your top four PlayStation titles from the previous year.
Bronze Trophy: Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor
Our overall winner was only good enough to score the Bronze Trophy in your poll, but Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor still fared well with a strong seven per cent of the overall votes. Packing brutally entertaining combat that would make even the Dark Knight beam, alongside the innovative Nemesis System, Monolith Productions' Tolkien tie-in is understandably lapping up the 2014 plaudits right now.
Silver Trophy: Destiny
What? While we controversially plumped up for Hideo Kojima's it's-a-demo-not-a-game survival horror scare-a-thon P.T. in our Silver Trophy slot, 10 per cent of you reckoned that Bungie's intergalactic escapade Destiny was the best that PlayStation had to offer in 2014. With slick shooting and some of the most stunning scenery this side of the Milky Way, there's a definite case to be made – not that we necessarily agree.
Gold Trophy: inFAMOUS: Second Son
It would appear that we can all agree on one thing, though: Sucker Punch's supercharged pseudo-sequel inFAMOUS: Second Son was a sublime sandbox effort. Scooping up a very respectable 14 per cent of the votes, Delsin Rowe's inaugural adventure fetched the Gold Trophy in your poll – which is exactly where it finished in our staff vote as well. We guess that we can say with authority now that this Seattle set outing was very much in bloom.
Platinum Trophy: Dragon Age: Inquisition
It was our Bronze Trophy pick, but Dragon Age: Inquisition is your Game of the Year. Running away with almost 20 per cent of your votes, BioWare's we're-not-rubbish-really role-playing release plotted a real return to form for the company. Boasting a rich world oozing with oodles of interesting personalities, this sequel's success discredits a long-running office theory: that Señor Ramsey is the only person that cares about this property.
That's us done and dusted for 2014, but we'll be back bright and early on Monday, 5th January with renewed energy to walk you through the next 12 months on Planet PlayStation. Look, we even got a new logo to celebrate the New Year – it's going to be fun!

@get2sammyb Did you just deny my love of Dragon Age?
Destiny? maybe if the game was actualy fun to play I could see it up there but the whole thing is a chore and a borefest, yeah it looks nice but good looks and bungies name isn't enough to carry a game
@NicolaHayden Looks like it...
I somehow knew the Destiny fanboys would attack enmass, just because this has been one of the most vocal sites regarding it.
Destiny. Lol.
People have been brainwashed to thinking Destiny is a good game, that's the only explanation.
"you've come up with a similar selection of software to us. Perhaps we're not so insane, after all?"
Lol yeah except this list doesn't have p.t as a silver award for game of the year lol which beat dragon age..(never gonna let you live that one down) hahaha and I'm happy to see dragon age take the top spot where it rightfully belongs
As for the guys hating on destiny.. I don't get it personally. I understand it didn't exactly live upto the hype... but let's be honest... no game could ever live up to the hype that was surrounding that game. I think back about all the time I spent playing that game with my friends and I realize I really did have a lot of fun with that game while it lasted. Sure it started to get really repetitive and tedious after a while but for that first month or so it was great fun.
Destiny... lol....
We really deserve EA, Ubisoft, Activision ripping us off and milking us till the last penny....
@mitcHELLspawn
I believe is not only, or mainly, about the hype and the "poor" deliver.... at least for me, is more about the fact that Destiny was a very dangerous precedent for the gaming community: Selling an empty shell advertising it as the definitive game, and then start to fullfill it with DLC letting users hope they will finally get what was promised to them (not to talk what Bungie did to weekly strikes after the first dlc's release).
PS: this is funny and true...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bUIvhQPPCRg
A good list. I votedd for Second Son, and if I could have voted for a second place game it would have been Destiny. I guess haters gonnna hate, but it deserves that spot.
Destiny is super fun, it just lacks a coherent story.
The community listed Destiny...
Theres a telltale sign that this list is 25% faulty.
DESTINY??????? Lol
@arnoldlayne83 I've got to agree with you on that. The game absolutely lacked way too much content and not only that they're selling the expansion packs for 20 dollars a piece! That's actually disgusting. I mean even call of duty, the cash cow of all cash cows sells their individual dlc for 10 dollars... I've boycotted destiny's dlc for sure. It says something for sure if I won't buy it lol because I buy pretty much every game and I enjoyed destiny a lot but I think they got way too greedy for their own good.
Where's Vita's?
Destiny being on this list made me question the sanity of 10% who read this website.
It is a great example of why EA, Activi$ion, Ubisoft, etc., will keep releasing partial games & charge us $60.
I am disappointed that, "My PS3 Backlog" didn't make the list. Oh well. Maybe next year.
@Knocks
Funny, i said the same thing
Jesus, there's been like five of these Game of the Year articles, that really shouldn't matter when most of these games underperformed.
To be fair I understand why so many people love Destiny still. It's an extremely social game. Getting together with a group of friends, or random people and just having a blast. That may not be enough reason for some of us but i feel we've been unfair in judging Destiny and its players. It takes different strokes man.
I agreed with the staff picks more than user picks. But i think far cry 4 should be up there as well, instead of Destiny
Well I gave in and downloaded DA:I from the store last night and yeah my view has changed already. That is my game of the year with unity second. I can tell already this game is going to be epic
@BetweenTheTrees I agree with FC4
Okay, people: Some of us might have different opinions than the rest of you, and actually enjoy Destiny. I'm getting tired of people acting like those who like the game deserve to be sent to an asylum over a game opinion. It wasn't my favorite game this year, but it was my second pick. It's not perfect, but I still find it to be a lot of fun. There's no need to act so harsh towards those of us who actually enjoy the game.
@Mrskinner nice. Unity was my second behind second son. I'll be starting dragon age tonight hopefully so we'll see if I feel the same way. (Haven't played mordor yet either)
@ztpayne7 hope you enjoy it as much as I am. Wish I would have took the plunge sooner! Mordor is a great game too. The nemesis system is loads of fun
Destiny isn't terrible but man even getting fourth (edit: third even worse) shows how bad this year has been for certain consoles.
@VIIIAxel I am not saying people need to be sent on Asylum.... just saying that the actual condition of gaming industry is mainly our fault...
@mitcHELLspawn And even in the Cashcow Of Duty if you don't buy a DLC you are not let down unable to play what you purchased in the original game....
What they did is just s**t, the community should turn its back to such greedy behaviours.
@Jazzer94 I disagree with you here.... it is not a matter how sh*tty was the year for certain consoles (I can name at least 5 games better than that on ps4), is just a matter on how we are sensible to hype and advertising campaigns....
Language - get2sammyb
@arnoldlayne83 Curious which 5 games you'd pick (but I don't want to see GTA 5 or TLOU:R mentioned).
Hey guys if you are going to complain about how Destiny ranked then do a favor and look in the mirror. This was a reader's poll so you all voted and that is where the numbers came from. I mean honestly I wouldn't have voted for Destiny but I guess alot more people enjoyed it then I thought.
Anyway guys let's not insult user's over their picks or how people who voted for a certain game lack a brain or whatever. It takes people from all walks of life to enjoy games.
YES! I'M NOT MAD! DRAGON AGE IS GOTY!
I feel like the protagonist from a disaster movie who knew the truth but nobody would believe him, and then it comes true.
To be fair, this is a pretty solid list of games. Well done, everyone.
Great list! I picked Dragon Age myself, not just because it's a great game, but it's also the best bang for buck title out there. There is just so much to do in it, and all of it is fun. I just hope The new Witcher game will be as huge, if not bigger.
@Jazzer94 Diablo 3 Ultimate Evil, Alien Isolation, Driveclub, Samurai Warriors 4, Far Cry 4, The Evil Within just to mention the "mainstreams" (excluding gtaV, TLOU remastered and the ones mentioned in the article.
But hey, tastes.... I had a crack with the ps4 this year.
@ShogunRok #33 heheheheh...
you are not alone! we believed you
@ShogunRok you have impeccable taste my man. I only hope those who haven't yet played the title find a chance to do so.. it is truly a game changer. DA: I is game of this new gen for me so far, nevermind GOTY.
Just goes to show the influence marketing has. The "favorite games" are always those which were advertised the most.
Dragon Age Inquisition, there is no justice for you lol.. But that's the way it always goes. You poll Nintendo gamers their favorite picks they'll tell you "Mario Kart 8 and Smash" when in reality DKC Tropical Freeze and Bayonetta 2 crap all over both those games.
Marketing influences popularity. Big time.
Oh, that proves theory, that crpwd has a mind of 5 year old person. Really that half trash ubisoftish rpg =((((
@mitcHELLspawn
The gunplay in Destiny is as good as I've ever experienced in any FPS I'll give it that.
@BetweenTheTrees
Agree on Far Cry 4, it deserved a spot on the list.
@mitcHELLspawn Would of been a Great game!, but people's biggest problem with this game is it promised so much then failed so bad, they made a shell of a game and are selling the rest of it as DLC, and if you don't have the DLC you get locked out of more of the game, that's poor form from Bungie.
I'm super surprised FIFA 2015 didn't get in this top lot :/
It's great to see all the love for dragon age ! I'm seriously blown away by this game. It is also definitely my game of the gen so far as well @Madd_Hatter401 & I haven't even beaten it yet. I'm 90 hours in, have barely scraped the surface of the main story. I've been using my time to find new lands and spread the influence of my inquisition as well as finding ways for my group to like and respect me more. I have 6 out of 9 of my companions right now as great friends. I haven't really done much for Solas or Vivienne though since I'm not really a big fan of either.. I love planting the inquisitions flag and genuinely feeling like your making a difference when you go into a new area and clear it out of problems and set up your camps and influence etc.. ah I could just talk all day about this game. So good.
@Knocks Just like people were brainwashed in 2013 into thinking The Last Of Us is a good game rather than a stunning experience with pathetically little gameplay Or, alternatively, people are allowed to think a game you don't like (Destiny) or I don't like (TLOU) is a good game.
@Midzark FIFA 15 seems really flat to me. It just never feels right. Considering its on new hardware the commentary is severely limited compared to previous versions too.
I can't complain reallyas I didn't vote at all. All the games I'd consider to be in a GOTY list either weren't available to vote for or had absolutely no chance of getting in any of the top positions. Can't say any of these in this article are going to make it on my personal list
@rastamadeus I totally understand that people have different opinions to me. Hell, I put 150 hours into Destiny, I can see what the allure is, but the game is bland, and you pay a premium price for minimal, repetitive content and the DLC did exactly the same thing. It gets credit for being probably the only decent co-op shooting experience on PS4 right now, but when you grind repetitive strikes for 10 hours for a new gun or whatever, well, you may as well have been brainwashed.
Well after playing 2 decades of games I rate destiny highly ... just didn't like the £20 expansions. One of the best fps out there. A snooze fest is civ 5... 30mins I turned it off.
@rastamadeus TLOU "Pathetically little gameplay" LOL.
Its a 14 hour game with 13 and a half hours of gameplay .
The game is not cut scene heavy.
Its fine if you didnt like the game, but please stop spouting blatant lies. TLOU has tons of gameplay.
If you ever actually played the game, then you Wouldn't need telling this! Troll.
@mitcHELLspawn LOL I am exactly the same with Solas.. he's just to drab, not much of conversationalist.
@Madd_Hatter401 I don't like solas either.... my least fav mage so far...
Vivienne as fire mage and dorian as spirit mage ar far superior in my gamethrough.... and more funny
@Knocks: It takes all types of gamers to enjoy all types of games. Some people enjoyed what Destiny has to offer others don't just because someone doesn't like the same thing you do doesn't mean they were brainwashed.
@arnoldlayne83 Dorian is my favorite mage, a lot of funny and interesting dialogue. My favorite character over all is probably Iron Bull.. he is hilariously interesting. If he is not yet in you're inquisition you have got to get him.
@Madd_Hatter401 I unlocked them all... I am at 85 h into the game () still no close to the end... keep getting lost into subquests (and dragon hunting). I have to invest sometime into Iron bull, so far my tanks have been Cassandra and Blackwall (amazing). But my plan is to make Ironbull my dragonslaying specialist, working on it.
What an amazing game... I have gtaV and Far Cry waiting for me, but still can't put this one off or neither wanna getting it close to the end.
Infamous second son hahaha what a joke, bit of a coincidence that we get a free helping in PS+, funny how I dont know anyone in real life that actually LIKED this game its only on websites like these that people like them. HAHA infamous second son tell me another, how many people voted on this site let me guess about 100, haha SP only never going to be the "best game of the year" get a life (lmao) suckersssss. (I dont believe half the stuff I read on this site and I certainly don't believe this for a second).
Destiny was the obvious choice (I don't play it any more and have no plan's on playing it again in the future) and i'm picking Dragonage up next week. This site is to coooool to choose Destiny though or Fifa that stayed at the top of the charts longer than any game this year (I didn't even buy Fifa)
Not sure about destiny taking silver but sorely agree about da Inquisition! Def best game if the year in my opinion..
@xMEADx lol get a life man. Just because you don't like something doesn't mean it's not a lot of other people's favorite.. lol you don't believe half the stuff you read on this site? So tell me again why you're on it? Seems a bit odd.
i really enjoy Destiny, sure its repetitive and story is hard to follow, but what keeps me playing is the missions and bounties to collect, and getting legendary armour and weapons is what is keep me coming back.
