No one deserves to be singled out for their appearance, and Ubisoft clearly believes passionately in that sentiment. Recognising that the Hunchback of Notre Dame has been persecuted for centuries based on his unusual exterior, the French firm has decided that the ugly individual deserves some company – and so these Assassin’s Creed Unity oddities are the publisher’s response.
The best thing about the PlayStation 4 is that it makes it incredibly easy to capture clips or images from your games, and while this has mostly been used to catalogue the beauty of titles such as inFAMOUS: Second Son and The Last of Us Remastered, well, it’s being employed for more nefarious means in Ubi’s latest open world escapade.
Y’see, while Arno Dorian’s induction into the Assassin Order is perfectly playable, it has problems – big problems. From a framerate that regularly dips into the 20s to texture pop-in so obvious that you’ll feel like you’re playing a PSone title at times, the game’s a bit of a technical mess. We’ll leave it to Digital Foundry to detail those issues, though, and leave you with these more obvious clangers.
Daddy ghoul
It’s not a spoiler to say that protagonist Arno’s father dies at the start of Assassin’s Creed Unity, but we think that we know why he was murdered. While the dignitary may appear caring and dependable when he hands his son a pocket watch, this image clearly proves that he’s harbouring a deep, dark secret – namely that he doesn’t actually have any facial features. Kill him with fire.
Kiss of death
Don’t do it, Elise – Arno actually harbours his father’s unfortunate ailment as well. While that thick guyliner and roguish grin may be convincing, the character reveals his true colours when he leans in for a swift snog with Ms. De LaSerre.
Hair we go
When he’s not trying to cover for his lack of facial features, Arno actually works as a model for the yet-to-be-founded hair and makeup company, L’Oreal. In this image, the character shows off his long locks, which appear to put fairytale favourite Rapunzel’s to shame.
Spire squire
Arno is an assassin that’s at one with the world, as evidenced by this image in which he’s positioned inside the peak of a Parisian building. While previous characters such as Ezio and Edward Kenway have had to do with hiding in bushes and hay, our French freedom fighter need only pretend that he’s a gargoyle in order to avoid detection by the local constabulary.

The hair glitch is amazing.
But while these are pretty funny, they're just the tip of the iceberg as far as Unity's technical performance is concerned. You can hardly turn a corner without seeing at least one NPC falling into the ground or walking straight through a wall. Then there's the framerate, the glitchy combat, the Uplay crashes...
It's painfully obvious that this was rushed to market, and as a result, it's in desperate need of a patch to sort all these issues out. Like the article says, it's playable, but it's so, so unpolished.
lol, love the Daddy Ghoul!
Have Ubi come out yet and said that these issues will be fixed?
UbiLOL. Smh...
This is where the annual release cycle is a big problem. They should have delayed this like Watch Dogs, but they've got to get it out ahead of Christmas, so they can start pimping next year's instalment in the New Year.
It's gross really, and it's a shame, because I'm really enjoying this game's setting and characters so far.
that hair glitch all I can say is
Because You' re Worth It
Has anyone else had a problem where it won't let you attack enemies sometimes? I don't really know how to describe it, but I try to draw my weapon at times to fight back and can't.
Ubi must have known about these for some time. I'm surprised they went ahead with it anyway. The game is only a day old and news like this can't be good. It went from "must have" to "I'll get to it eventually". No doubt I will get the game, but I don't feel the urgency for it now.
Amazing, I love that video, makes the game more appealing. Objective complete as he falls into the abyss, perfection. it will take something special to beat the one legged dude walking backwards though.
i haven't had any of these issues, except the ridiculous frame rate.
i love assassins creed, but i'm not sure if i'll be purchasing the next one
Arno looks like he is in Bay Watch in the hair picture.
On a AAA title like that, it just shouldn't happen!
@get2sammyb Once they began the Ezio sub-series, I knew this would happen.
The first was great and two vastly improved on it.
Then yearly editions went down hill.
I absolutely love this series and it's sad to see it go Call of Duty on us!
His dad dying is a spoiler, i have the game but yet to play it, busy with rogue. It really should have a warning in the text.
@Subie98 Apologise if you feel that way, but it's been openly mentioned by Ubisoft and happens in the first 15 minutes of the game.
Ubisoft releases another masterpiece...
@get2sammyb i try not to read too much that gives the story away. Maybe im a minority maybe im not. But i know im surely not alone. I hope i didnt come off as angry, just wish i hadnt read it.
Noob question. Can the frame rate be fixed with a patch?
@Subie98 Haha, not at all - that's absolutely fair enough. I apologise if I gave something away for you, as I know how annoying it is!
@Darthreven7 They can definitely clean up the game for sure. How much will they feasibly be able to fix? We'll have to wait and see.
@get2sammyb Yup, me too. Really, really enjoyed the characters and the setting all the way through, but I'd have been glad to wait two more months for them to actually finish the game.
I'm guessing that one day, Ubisoft will learn how to promote a game that releases outside of the Christmas period. Far Cry, Rogue, Unity, Shape Up, The Crew...all releasing within a four week window. It's borderline ridiculous.
@get2sammyb I honestly think that they could learn from CoD with this series. If they had two studios then it would enable them to take twice as long. That and nobody likes Uplay. Or Desmond.
@get2sammyb eh, stuff happens!
@get2sammyb I agree that they "had" to release it before christmas, but maybe then delay it by just one month, you're still hitting christmas with a couple weeks to spare and you fix the game as much as possible. I've pre-ordered the game, always been a fan of the series, I know I'll enjoy running around the beautifully rendered 18th century Paris, but I find releasing a triple A game in such a poor technical state is just not acceptable, that's just shameful and feels so greedy. Having said that, I can't wait to get my copy to have fun with all these glitches (less so with the appalling frame rate)
Surely the devs could have just limited the number of NPC's etc a little bit to improve the framerate? I mean I'd much rather have only 2500 NPC's on screen if it means a solid 30 fps rather than 10000 NPC's for sub 20 fps...
Ubi seem to be going down hill quickly. It seems they don't have the manpower to create the games they desire... Maybe they need to start hiring!
Glad I stop playing this milk franchise
The daddy goul thing is scary, what a joke Ubi.
The year of delays and disappointment.
@Bad-MuthaAdebis that clip reminds me of a glitch I had in Liberation, where Aveline got stuck briefly in scenery near some water, then went on to swim through the air a metre or so off the ground. Somehow though unity looks even more buggy than that...
@get2sammyb Have to agree with you on annual releases. All it does is rush development and make a product wear it's welcome even faster. Assassin's Creed might end up being a joke because of it.
I think the quickest a game should come out is two years. It's rather surprising how just a little extra time can do wonders. I'd rather put out a polished and well oiled machine and get consumer support instead of getting something out there ASAP just so I can get my check.
This can't be real.
this will be a rental for me, not paying full price for a broken game.
Way to look even worse Ubi. I still have some of there good games to get like Raymen Legends and Watch Dogs, but I'll not being buying any itching else from them. I only still have a bit of respect for them for ZombiU.
I literally watched that video over and over for laughs.
how did this game make it out of ubisofts quality control.
I hope they dont rush and mess up the division. Was looking forward to that game
I'm in Australia & sometimes we get a game a day before Nth America, sometimes a day later (with Shadow of Mordor a week later, Unity a day later)
I come home with my nice Bastille edition after dreading the bugs & I get a 888MB patch. First day patch nearly a GB. Yet to play it as I had a big TLOU sesh but I am hoping this game is a return to form & the stoopid patch fixes this madness & things carry on. I have been in love with AC since I first got AC 2 but since 3 the franchise has been slipping. I want to feel like I am living history again, meeting real important figures of the time & actually get some edutainment (I read the Animus entries on buildings & people, learning is fun! Don't do drugs!). We will say & along with the masses give my thoughts. I do have nightmares though that daddy Arno is under my bed now, thanks Push Square.
@FullbringIchigo lol
(at the risk of being ironic) l love that brilliant "kiss of death" screenshot !
on a serious note , to release a game looking like this is inexcusable .
When I was a kid developers actually finished their games before releasing them.
This is absolute garbage. The game is not finished. Plain and simple.
I honestly have to say i bought the game yesterday, and haven't encountered a those many glitches people talk about.. I haven't seen strange f_ckd up faces in the cinematics..Only thing i have encountered so far (and im in sequence 4 already) is low framerate a couple of times. But thats it.
Am i the only one not experiencing all these bugs?
