Vib Ribbon PSone

Remember when, for a few fleeting seconds, it seemed like new SCEA president Shawn Layden was going to say something interesting during Sony’s big E3 press conference this year? The animated executive seemed to segue into a segment about legendary PSone release Vib Ribbon – only to drop the title as quickly as he touched upon it, and move onto other less engaging things.

This tease sparked a mild outrage online, as the vector adventure – helmed by much of the same team behind PaRappa the Rapper – never released in North America. Fortunately, the platform holder’s pretty big at paying attention to consumer feedback these days, and so it’s finally decided to bring the game to the nation. Oh, and you can play it tomorrow.

“I would like to give you all the chance to celebrate this iconoclastic title by bringing to all fans, worldwide, the chance to experience the original Vib Ribbon,” the chirpy chief wrote on the PlayStation Blog. “As a result of the ‘outpouring of love’ at the E3 name drops, our engineers have developed a way to bring Vibri to life on the PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation Vita.”

Layden mentioned that it’s also working on a way to extend the love to the PlayStation 4, which suggests that the company’s busy building some form of PSone Classics support into its next-gen console. Either way, the best thing about this port is that it will boast the original’s audio CD compatibility, allowing you to dance away to your own music tracks on the PS3. We genuinely think that we’re going to cry.

Those of you in Europe will have to wait an extra week to play this version, but considering that the game actually deployed on these shores some 15 years ago, we suppose that we can forgive Sony the seven day delay. Either way, it’s great that everyone will now be able to experience this rhythmic gem – you’ve never lived until you’ve guided a rabbit around a loop-the-loop while listening to Lady.
