Let's get it started in here

As is the case with any upcoming industry event, gamers are currently whipping themselves into a major frenzy over the PlayStation Experience event. For those out of the loop, this fan-based Las Vegas convention is set to run from 6th December through until 7th December, and promises to give attendees hands-on time with a bunch of forthcoming titles – as well as a glimpse into the future of the PlayStation 4.

We hypothesised only last week that this is unlikely to include anything major, but it only takes a few people with a Twitter account to change expectations. Indeed, a couple of French gaming journalists claim that Sony will announce a title in a couple of months that will “engulf the web” it’s so big. Sounds like a bit of an exaggeration to us. Nevertheless, the location of the excited scribes has prompted some speculation that it could be related to Quantic Dream.

Elsewhere, Hello Games boss Sean Murray has also been in on the act, cryptically claiming that he “saw something amazing coming to PS4 owners soon that I probably can’t talk about”. What could it be? Well, again, the Internet’s going absolutely gaga – but, realistically, it could be anything from a new firmware feature to a forthcoming indie game that the No Man’s Sky maker happens to like the look of.

And, then, of course, there’s gaming journalist Geoff Keighley. He wrote overnight that “games will rise” on 5th December, which is a day before Sony’s big community event. There’s a good chance that this is related to his VGA (or VGX) awards ceremony, but we’re sure that the hype man will spend a few more weeks fishing for retweets before actually, y’know, revealing anything concrete. He’s the master of that, after all.

To be honest, we’re going to stick with our original stance on this: don’t get too excited. Having had a few days to mull it over, we can certainly see the Ratchet & Clank remake that was announced at E3 getting a trailer, as Insomniac Games should be free to promote that by the time that December rolls around. There’ll no doubt be new trailers for the likes of The Order: 1886 and Bloodborne, too. But the kinds of things that some people are expecting are, frankly, insane...
