Out This Week: Borderlands, The Evil Within, Minecraft: PS Vita Edition, Peggle 2

Holy schnitzel, if you thought that last week’s edition of Out This Week was stacked with an insurmountable number of new releases, then this instalment is in a whole different league. With the summer being comparatively barren for new PlayStation software, we’re not sure why developers big and small have decided to deploy their wares all at once. Still, if the retail titles weren’t enough, there’s a dollop of indie goodness to get through this time as well. We’re wiping our brows while we write.

Pick of the Week: The Evil Within

We’ll be honest: it was almost impossible to select a Pick of the Week this time around. With so many titles to choose from – each appealing to vastly different tastes – it seems a little unfair to single one out. Still, they’re the rules, and The Evil Within seems like a solid pick based solely on the amount of marketing money that Bethesda’s pouring into the survival horror. That theory made more sense before we actually typed it out.

A better reason for this to occupy our spotlight slot is because it’s the latest from Resident Evil maker Shinji Mikami. And, unsurprisingly, his fingerprints are all over the devilish adventure: torch touting villagers, haunted houses, and really imaginitive weapons make up a good portion of this title’s DNA. It’s not quite the groundbreaking masterpiece that Resident Evil 4 was, but with Capcom taking that property in a very different direction, it may yet be the spiritual successor that you’ve been yearning for.
