Push Rewind

It's been a rather straightforward week here at Push Square. We've had a fair few reviews, a little bit of bad news, and a look at September's all important PlayStation Plus update. The week ahead is perhaps more important, as we gaze forward to Sony's pre-Tokyo Game Show conference and next month's big releases, but it's always nice to look back on what you've achieved, and so without further ado, let's break things down into some bite-sized chunks.

Reviews

inFAMOUS: First Light - 7/10

inFAMOUS: First Light is never going to set the world alight, but if you’ve been gagging for more of Sucker Punch’s superhero series, then it will fill that hole until a full sequel charges onto store shelves. Fetch’s fast-paced take on the neon power set makes her an entertaining protagonist to play as – especially in the frantic Battle Arenas. In many ways, this represents the brand stripped back to its very basics – and you’ll need to decide whether that’s enough for you.

Metro Redux - 8/10

Metro Redux takes two popular post-apocalyptic affairs, and enhances them for Sony’s next-gen system. These are more than just mere ports, though, as both titles have been heavily reworked in order to feel fresh and new. The impact is more impressive in 2033’s case, as it practically looks and plays like a brand new game, while still retaining the core of what made the original such a unique experience. Last Light’s improvements are less significant, but performance enhancements make this the definitive version of the title – especially if you originally enjoyed the outing on the PS3. All in all, whether you’re new to the franchise or not, the abandoned underground has never looked this inviting.

What Are September 2014's Free PlayStation Plus Games?

The only issue with writing about games is that one tends to construct their life around release dates, press conferences, and PlayStation Plus updates. If you asked us whether September was approaching, we’d only be able to accurately answer because of today’s Instant Game Collection information. Of course, you haven’t opened this article to hear about our first-world problems, but instead to learn a little more about this month’s set of PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and Vita freebies, right? We’d best get started, then.

Talking Point: Is Indie Becoming a Defunct, Dirty Word?

Indie is the video game equivalent of Marmite: a sector of the medium so divisive that it’s simultaneously culpable of both dismay and delight. The very website that you’re reading is evidence of that, but we’re not alone: scuffles and skirmishes more heated than the format wars themselves can be attributed to the increasingly taboo terminology, which is particularly unnecessary considering the frustratingly hostile nature of this hobby at the best of times. But why exactly has a word once universally associated with creativity and originality mutated into a hotbed for hate and negative debate – and what does it even mean in this day and age?

PSN Temporarily Offline Again as Attacks Ramp Up Once More

If you assumed that the PlayStation Network was safe following Sunday’s outage, then you were wrong, as it appears to have collapsed again. Lizard Squad, the group responsible for last week’s downtime, is claiming responsibility for another DDoS attack, which has already prompted an official comment from Sony’s European branch.

Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell is Coming to PS4 and It's, Er, A Standalone Expansion Pack

Well, we didn't see that one coming. As you've no doubt heard, publisher Deep Silver released a Saints Row teaser image over Twitter earlier today, and with developer Volition hosting a panel at this year's PAX convention this evening, it seemed all but assured that the crazy sandbox franchise would be making an appearance on our shiny new consoles.

Gossip Regarding Grand Theft Auto V PS4's Release Date Hints at Delay

Grand Theft Auto V is quite possibly the strangest PlayStation 4 game to date. Pegged for release later this year, the title still doesn’t have a firm release date – or any real details at all attached to it. In a financial meeting earlier in the year, publishing overlord Take Two stated that the next-gen port is still on track, but despite us expecting it to put in an appearance at Gamescom earlier in the month, the title was nowhere to be seen.

Dead or Alive 5: Last Round is Smashing Its Way onto PS4

Stop those dirty thoughts right this instant. Yes, Dead or Alive 5: Last Round is coming to the PlayStation 4, and no, we don't know if it'll feature, er, improved physics.

Ubisoft Keeps Its Blade Hidden by Delaying Assassin's Creed Unity into November

A few months ago, October was looking like this year's most bloated period for new releases, but a few big delays later, and November is beginning to look like 2014's real heavy hitter.

Watch as We Take a Trip Back in Time to Round Up Gamescom 2014 and Its Game of the Show

Ah, good old Gamescom 2014. Remember when it divided the gaming community because of its supposed focus on smaller games? We thought that you would. As you may remember, the newly announced WiLD won our prestigious Game of the Show award thanks to your votes, but if you haven't been keeping up, then we daresay that this recap is the perfect place for you.
