We were promised surprises at this year's Gamescom conference, but this isn't exactly what we had in mind. That's right, it seems that the absurdly titled Rise of the Tomb Raider won't be making its way to the PlayStation 4 after all. During Microsoft's media briefing today it was announced that Lara Croft's latest hellish holiday will be launching exclusively on Xbox One.
However, in a recent blog post developer Crystal Dynamics has reiterated that it's not turned its back on the PlayStation family entirely. "This doesn't mean that we're walking away from our fans who only play on PlayStation or PC," the California-based studio said. "Those are great systems, with great partners, and amazing communities. We have Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris coming to those platforms this December."
What's your take on this intriguing development? Are you peeved that you won't be able to play Rise of the Tomb Raider on your Sony system? Draw your bow in the comments section below.

Yeah seen this, absolutely gutted. Loved the first one.
I really hope this is a timed exclusive, but it's hard to tell from the press conference alone.
It will be a real shame if it is exclusive. Especially considering the re-release on both XBONE and PS4.
I'm pretty sure Microsoft paid for that to be exclusive, if not, then that is the dumbest move I've seen a developer do alongside Crytek coming out with a Ryse 2. LOL
This is HUGE for Xbox. Let's be frank, Xbox is about to become a must buy system in 2015.
What a bombshell, that certainly woke/worked up some people.
@RawWilson1 I agree with you that it's a big deal, but c'mon - we haven't even seen the game yet!
RawWilson1, no it's not. ROFL tomb raider has never been a game that sold consoles.
That's one less game page to worry about.
Also, it's one thing to have an exclusive, but getting exclusive after it's been announced it a low blow from Microsoft.
Another day of terrible business practices from the industry, seems like building studios and making their own exclusives isn't enough anymore.
Sony took a beating at E3 and now at Gamescon? they need to do something quick......
@Demi_God agreed, ha ha. 1 exclusive. So what.
I have never enjoyed tomb raider but im to yet to try the latest version.
@RawWilson1 Im gutted about this, but it doesn't make me want to buy the xbone just for the 1 worthwhile exclusive for me.
Well certainly a shock but all is fair in money and war. MS probably paid SE a pretty penny. Otherwise it doesn't make sense because I'm pretty sure that about 70% of the TR: DE sales come from PS4?
Don't worry guys, Square & Crystal Dynamics haven't forgotten about its Playstation Tomb Raider fans. We're still getting Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris.......................
pretty much, It's quite a dumb exclusive to buy on Microsofts part because it's not going to sell Xbox Units. Honestly, MS is doing one stupid thing after another and it's not getting any prettier here. o.O
M$ Tatics are great. No talent to make new games so they steal them from others.
You know what f**k them! F**k them all!
Any idea what Osiris is? I'm guessing PC game?
@SimonAdebisi
is a co-op oriented downloadable game
Jeez this was a low blow Microsoft playing dirty now but really they had a good Gamescom.
@Splat GIF of the year. All years.
@SimonAdebisi Its a sequel to Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, which I think we've had on PS+ previously for Ps3. You may already have it backlogged if you've had Plus a while. Played kinda like an isometric puzzle-action game with co-op. Was ok I guess
Evil Microsoft strikes again. They need to start releasing first party games and quit buying out these 3rd party studios, it's getting ridiculous.
Regardless, I still won't buy an X box one.
Well I guess Microsoft had to do something to try and compete. I honestly believe it will be timed. Can't imagine what cash MS would have to fork out for it never to come to PS4 or PC. The lost sales would be enormous.
Ok Sony, since MS have done this now is the time to unleash the Shenmue bomb. If you want to follow up with a partnership with Sega for Western Yakuza publishing aswell to sweeten the pot I think you'll be fine
Wow that was an upper punch from Microsoft. Hmm... to counter this, how about uncharted 4 incorporates nathan's hot tomb raider-esque cousin!! A playable heroine in uncharted 4 bow and hot pants a prerequisite!
Massive blow to Sony considering Tomb Raider has such a history on the PlayStation brand. Hopefully it will kick Sony out of their 'we're just so fantastic' phase and they'll start listening to customers.
Joke post: Boo Lara! You sold out!
#LaraSelloutConfirmed.
@MadchesterManc I only had plus a month or so before ps4, when I picked up the vita. Never had PS plus on the ps3. Doesn't sound appealing really.
After the last one, I can't say I'm fussed. It was an inferior compilation of scenes from the various Uncharted games. Roll on Uncharted 4.
@MadchesterManc I presume he was laughing under his breath when he said that.
I think this hurts Sony fans more than it helps MS. That is surely the definition of a slimy move.
Thinking about it more, this is really a double edged sword of dumb "movery" and here's why. In order for this game to be exclusive, MS would have had to pay a good chunk of money on a game to be exclusive that wouldn't push console units like they really need at this point in time. On the other side, this is the dumbest move Square/Enix have done as of yet because the first launch didn't do good at all, it did very poor. So why not launch exclusively on a console that it really won't sell much either o.O
Sony didn't get screwed and I don't see how this is a punch in the nuts from Microsoft considering how piss poor the sales were for Tomb Raider in the first place.
My point is, is that one of the two companies here got screwed, it was either Microsoft (which will now have to make up that money back despite their poor console sales) or square/Enix which are already in enough trouble from last gen pulling stupid move after stupid move and yet they keep on doing the stupid dance.
@Splat You win!
Oh my people really don't like this do they?
@Demi_God yarp
Well, as long as CD dont mind a mahoooosive drop in sales, then its all gravy.
As a big TR fan I was looking forward to this.
And that little statement by CD is almost like a "Well, we know you wanted steak, but thats off the menu, so how about a bag of pork scratchings?"
u wot Microsoft ?
Sony better buy of a sick exclusive
Hey now, there is nothing wrong with "pork scratchings" for people that like pork scratchings. hehe
@PoNY_LTD they don't really need to, although it would be awesome if Sony did but it's not really necessary because Tomb Raider isn't really that big of a seller, at least not last gen, it sold so bad and even SE / CD complained about the poor sales.
@Demi_God
It didn't sell bad, it was one of the best selling games of the year, the problem was that it was so expensive to make it didn't make its budget back until the Definitive Editions were released for extra cash.... However, its undoubtedly the major win for Microsoft so far
"SE complained about the poor sales."
And their answer was to make the next one available to less people...
@Demi_God it was to show the difference in budget and quality. I like scratchings, but that doesnt make them good ya dig!
The whole statement was a farcicle one to appease folk is all.
Well I didn't see this coming... what a shame.
Another series that started on the PlayStation brand jumps ship. First Metal Gear Solid starts appearing on Xboxes, and now Sony is outright losing the next Tomb Raider. Sony better get their ducks in a row and do something about this.
I get that this is just one game, but an exclusive is still an exclusive.
@toogoodofaplaya I know it was, I was just being........o.O......there is all.
I think it's funny though how some people are making this game out to be big all of a sudden. Also, yes, SE did complain about the lack of Tomb Raider sales last gen, the definitive version sold much more but that could also be due to the lack of 3rd party AAA that people want so bad. Once more games come out, I know for a fact this series will get buried yet again like it has been all last gen.
Who said competition is good? Die xbox lol
@Demi_God yeah true, but it's the name. Tomb raider... All the kids know it and this effect Xbox marketing in a good way. They're really trying everything... You see/hear Xbox name everywhere now. Gonna have to watch Sony conference, because Microsoft are winning the winter at the moment.
@Diddy_kong Metal Gear started on Nintendo though…
Haha oh man that sucks for those of you who don't have an Xbox one.. you can play it down all you like but the tomb raider reboot was one of the best games of the year last year... and I'm sure cd are working at improving this one any way they can... can't believe Microsoft did this haha.. I think it's cool. They're definitely not taking the fight sitting down that's for sure.
Very much hoping this is a timed exclusive as I enjoyed the Definitive Edition reboot on PS4. MS certainly have the cash to buy out exclusives like this if they want to, but I feel like this probably isn't the case here. Maybe that's just me hoping... Fingers crossed!
Quantum Break looked pretty good too - finally Xbox One owners have something to actually crow about
This seriously sucks. I liked the first one so much i got the the definitive edition as my first ps4 game and I was really excited they announced a sequel but I dont plan on buying a xbone just to play it. It seriously better just be a timed exclusive
@mitcHELLspawn Its cool buying 3rd party games? For who? Doesnt change anything for guy who own an Xbone.. theyd better be creative with their own studio now that would be cool
@Jazzer94 http://youtu.be/SD8gO8TAr4s
Considering Microsoft have lost millions with its XboxOne already, buying game's at this point isn't a wise move. TR hasn't been doing well since the originals, the reboot while good didn't set the world on fire. In fact if I remember right, didn't people call it an uncharted clone?
@ToOGoodOfAPlaya Only it didn't.
They shouldn't have even bothered releaseing the Definitive Edition on ps4 if they were just gonna turn around and do this crep!
@banacheck honestly what the hell are you even talking about? Lost millions? People are so caught up in the ps4 vs xbox bull that they forget that the Xbox one is selling way better than the 360 did and they're yet to launch in all these regions which is coming next month. Blows my mind how badly the blinders are on people's eyes. The best thing for gaming is that BOTH consoles sell amazing.
@N711 I think it's good just for the fact that more people will be buying xbox ones than before the announcement. Which means more customers which means the studios will have more confidence in the brand which means bigger budgets for the games etc etc... the more people that own both the Xbox one and ps4 the better it is for gaming.
@AeroZeppelin Much appreciated.
@FaaF I have a copy of Metal Gear for the NES. But youre right it was on MSX first.
Really liked the first one. This sucks. Sony needs to come out swinging. I'm happy with my ps4 but they just need momentum.
Dooooohk Then. It's an Xbox 1 exclusive.
Shouldn't have bothered releaseing the game on ps3 either
@mitcHELLspawn oh I mean it doesnt bother me that much. but imagine Sony buy a 3rd party game too in turn. Now would that be cool for you?
Thats not the kind of competition some say is supposed to be good for gamers.. I dont think so
@N711 I wouldn't mind at all since I own the ps4 as well lol.. that's what I'm getting at. I do think it's a weird choice to buy for Microsoft though.. a game like evolve I would think makes more sense to buy.
I'm beyond disgusted with every party involved with this except one... Microsoft. When you're getting your ass beat you have to use everything at your disposal to find a way to fight back and win and the easiest weapon for MS to grab? Money. Now that said, SE doesn't have to accept the moneyhat. Sales of Tomb Raider not being as high as expected would lead me to believe to make as much money as possible you want the next game on as many platforms as possible (including Wii U), looking at how PS4 is selling and how PS fans have continually lined this failure of a company's pockets with money despite the fact it's games have been complete sh*t in recent years (with the exception of games like Tomb Raider that are developed by companies picked up in mergers) it's a despicable backstab. Just like with Titanfall I will not be convinced that whatever MS paid is worth the tradeoff, unless MS shows me the cold, hard numbers. Since I don't see that happening I'm going to continue to believe this is a short-sighted d*ckmove by a bunch of scumbags who treat its fans like crap and Crystal Dynamics as well can take their downloadable garbage and shove it up their asses. I'll give Konami this, I'm sure MS went at it many times trying to steal away MGS as an exclusive, and it never stuck the knife in the back of PS fans. All that said, can't say I won't buy the game. I'm not going to deprive myself of that.
Lastly, Sony itself can go get f*cked. Enough sitting back and enough defending this arrogant, stupid corporation. You have the best selling console and sit there doing NOTHING to try and sustain that momentum. We can all act like this isn't a big deal. I've already seen it with people saying 'we haven't even seen the game yet,' like we've seen a bunch of Uncharted 4, but hey, it's ok, to go on name alone because Uncharted is a Sony exclusive and has a good pedigree, it doesn't matter that the last Tomb Raider was a great game, only idiot would think this one will be as well, especially now that's it's an Xbox One exclusive... Stupid. Defending Sony's strategy of hyping indies and Remasters while not showing any sort of exciting AAAs to get people excited... stupid. The 'no games' thing is real, and legit, and it will continue to get worse as long as Sony sits back and does nothing. It's time to either start paying for some serious exclusives or get your first party's asses in gear. Once I again, that ridiculous #4theplayers needs to be shoved straight up the rearends of everybody running the PS division right now.
@mitcHELLspawn I guess it was an opportunity as they started Xbone version first maybe.. anyway not my worries
Money talks and MS love to throw theirs around...
@Gamer83 to be fair, I don't feel like the 1 is teeming with games, either. this is the first game that Xbox has announced that makes me jealous. Since they struck first, I think we should wait til we see what sony has to say before jumping to conclusions. They really need to prove themselves today.
@Gamer83 Yeesh.
@Gamer83 I repeat calm down bro.
@Punished_Boss
I am actually calm. It may not look that way from the essay but that's just because I like to type.
@Gamer83 Oh.
It's going to be in direct competition against Uncharted 4....I liked the revamped Tombraider but really Nathan Drake beats Lara Croft any day....just means both systems have different but similar franchises and I know which of the two I'm happier getting to play.
I have bought and loved every single Tomb Raider game day 1, the reboot i'v bought twice though i'm yet to delve into my Ps4 just yet, so yeah i'm fairly let down by this.
Thinking more about it though it worries me for the future of SE, this has such a large risk of tanking badly and as such could effect games down the line I.E the next Deus Ex or Hitman. If they don't feel they can gamble on one of their biggest western titles due to lack of sales (On their head be it) then I would imagine the confidence of the already battered studio will plummet further
@Gamer83 I agree with the top part of what you said lol. Microsoft need to just give it a rest. Their indie policy should of been enough for developers to of abandoned them and not let them throw their weight around. Hopefully this is just a timed exclusive I really enjoyed the first game, uncharted 4 should keep us busy till they see sense.
@Demi_God I think maybe you're forgetting the first few installments, which definitely moved a few Playstations back in the day.
Bit of a daft move from Square Enix in my opinion, I loved the first one but not enough for me to consider purchasing an inferior platform to play the sequel on and I'm certain I won't be the only one who feels this way. I hope whatever sum of money Microsoft have paid SE is enough to cover the deficit in sales numbers. Seems like a risky and short sighted business plan for a third party publisher to sell their product on a less popular platform. I hope for Crystal Dynamics sake it all works out or we my lose yet another games studio.
No surprise that's what M$ does best. Can't make their own games but instead just waste money on 3rd parties to kept exclusives to themselves.
@Aviator Yet if Sony were announcing ROtTR as an exclusive then people here would be saying what a great move by Sony... Just because Microsoft have taken it doesn't mean it's somehow a low blow.
@Gamer83 Only man who seems to see sense. Maybe as you're also not a fanboy you can see the mess Sony are digging themselves into...
I hope this game is just a timed exclusive...as long as it comes to PS4 eventually (2016?) I'll be happy.
If not the case though, then I guess I'll miss out on playing Rise.
@rastamadeus
Dude, I can't see anything right now. I'm still in a bit of a haze over the whole Tomb Raider thing. While I'm not a fanboy, I do prefer the PS brand quite a bit and playing Tomb Raider on the X1, especially after playing the Definitive Edition on PS4 just won't seem 'right' I guess. We all have our comforts. I'll get over it, I'll enjoy the game when it comes out, EXCLUSIVELY for Xbox One while I also enjoy a little Uncharted 4 and whatever big 3DS game Nintendo makes for that year. I've been saying for a while though Sony needs to step up. If it has cards to play... play them. This show was another opportunity to do that, and they wasted it again.
So I will either have to buy a Xbox One and play it in 2015 or wait until 2016 and play it on my PC.
I can understand that Square Enix/Crystal Dynamic want to secure at less some of their money back on this game but, this could end up costing them sales
@PoNY_LTD Microsoft winning? Ha!
They couldn't run the first game in 1080 on XB1, and lets be honest the first game was ok i dont really care, its a dumb move on sqaureenix's part the xb1 is 5 million units down, this isnt going to make me buy an xb1. If they want to move some units they will release it on PC 6-12 months idk about a PS4 port, but again so what.
I can't believe all the Sony fan boys with blinders on... so Microsoft is in second place and they're trying to bring appeal to their console and buying exclusivity on their platform from third party publishers.... I wonder where they got that move? Sony has been doing this since the days of Playstation 1 from keeping games off of dream cast with EA franchises like gta mgs the list just goes on and on.. just because they haven't been doing much of it lately people's memories seem to just lapse. They invented this business practice. .. now it's not to say that I think it's a very good thing but face it this is the console wars... if you want to play all the games get both consoles like gamers like me do. I'd never limit myself to one platform. Sorry cry babies this is the industry we love for better or worse it creates buzz.
When I see some of the bile anti-MS, anti-SquareEnix, anti-EA, anti-anybody comments on here (and elsewhere) I despair that my beloved PlayStation Community has descended into a whimpering mess of drivelling fools. This news is being blown out of proportion and some people really need to grow up, take it on the chin and seriously just move on.
Meh, not to bothered about this, it would of been nice, but hell, least i got Uncharted, Bloodborne, and Drive Club to look forward to
