Back of the net

Stop the world and let us get off, because everyone at Push Square towers is pretty pooped this weekend. While the sheer excitement of E3 2014 has kept the sleepiness away, there’s no doubt that it’s taking its toll on all of us right now – and you’re probably feeling a little groggy after those late night press conferences to boot. What better way to kick away those blues, then, than with a few days spent sitting in front of your favourite games console? You know the drill, so let us know what you’re playing this weekend in the comments.

I absolutely adore video games, as you all know – but, honestly, I think I’m going to take a break this weekend. With the World Cup now in full swing, I’m going to make sure that I’m up to date with that, and also make the most of the humid weather that’s currently sweeping the UK. If I do pick up a controller, though, it’ll be to play Entwined.

Myself and many others on the team have been fortunate enough to receive a code for Destiny's recently announced Alpha, which means that Bungie's shiny space shooter will have my full attention over the next couple of days. The single hour that I invested in it yesterday has already assured me that it's going to be something special; I mean, it's got a place called 'The Tower' where you can just go and hang out with your friends – how cool is that? Oh, and the shooting's pretty good, too, if you're into that kind of thing.

There are too many E3 videos to watch in a week, so I'll be playing YouTube this weekend. Push Square's YouTube channel has an abundance of E3 trailers, and the PlayStation press conference for me to enjoy a second time. The official PlayStation channel has interviews, too. I've watched some already, but I fancy hearing direct from developers about DriveClub (Paul Rustchynsky), Alien: Isolation (Al Hope), The Order: 1886 (Dana Jan), and Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty (Lorne Lanning).

Now that the craziness of E3 is over and my university work has died down, I can finally get around to playing Watch Dogs. I tend to get dangerously addicted to open world games, so it’s likely that Ubisoft's latest will devour my entire weekend, but if I do have some extra time, I might try to tackle the pleasantly challenging Entwined.

After this long and busy week, I'm taking my thinking cap off and indulging in Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX. While you would think that I would be playing the first title in the saga, it's the unloved sequel Chain of Memories that will be stealing my weekend. Not only is it the one game that I missed in the franchise, but there is also no need to get wrapped up in puzzles or worry about random monster ambushes. Even on Proud mode, it should bring a peaceful weekend's entertainment.

This weekend it's going to be all about games that are coming out later in the year, as I spend more time with the Destiny Alpha and the Battlefield: Hardline beta. I've been really impressed with this small slice of Destiny, and it's really helped me get a grasp of how the game’s going to play when it finally comes out in September. Battlefield: Hardline, on the other hand, feels like it's just a mod for Battlefield 4, and has so far failed to capture the cops and robbers vibe that Payday 2 encapsulated so well. On the upside, though, the netcode is already much more stable than Battlefield 4, with no disconnects or rubber banding in sight.

Well, with the surprise E3 announcement that PS4 players can play the Destiny Alpha this weekend, I imagine I'll be spending a lot of time with that. I've always been a massive fan of Bungie, and from what I've played so far of Destiny, I'm not really going to have anything to worry about. I want to do another run through Entwined as well, because I loved it – plus, there’s an extra Trophy up for grabs – as well as maybe play through some Trine 2.

First, I've got to mention that I played FUSE last weekend with three friends, which turned out to be far more fun than I would've had on my own. I definitely recommend it for a solid co-op experience. Anyway, since I got accepted into the Destiny Alpha yesterday, I'll be playing that over the weekend in order to soak up the gorgeous world and gameplay that Bungie has graciously bestowed upon me. After that, I think some more Transistor and Mario Kart 8 will do. I might even get back into Dark Souls II as well, since the reveal of Bloodborne has kept From Software on my mind the past few days.

This weekend I will be intimidating criminals with a bit of good cop/bad cop in the Battlefield Hardline beta. There are many new features – batons, zip lines, grapple hooks, taser guns, etc – and it feels completely different to any other Battlefield title. I will also be spending my time exploring the Alpha of the much anticipated Destiny. This already looks and plays like a charm, and it's still quite early, so I cannot wait to play the beta and get my hands on the full release this September.

And we’re done. Will you be diving into the Destiny Alpha this weekend, or are you planning to unwind with something a little more relaxing like Entwined? Upload your itinerary in the comments section below.
