While it may not have been developed for the PlayStation 4 first and foremost, Naughty Dog is packing so many improvements into The Last of Us Remastered that it’s currently struggling to squeeze the game onto a single Blu-ray disc. Speaking with EDGE magazine, creative director Neil Druckmann explained that the re-release will boast in-game character models on par with those seen in the PlayStation 3 version’s cut-scenes, as well as re-rendered cinematics and more.
“We brought in all of the hi-res models, and then it's on par with what you saw in the cut-scenes,” the developer told the abovementioned publication, as reported by Videogamer.com. “There's an improved lighting model. After that, we started looking across the board; enemies look a little blurry up close, so that was pretty easy. We ramped those up, and saw a pretty significant difference.”
As previously reported, the studio’s targeting 60 frames-per-second during gameplay, and it’s bumped up the cut-scenes to match. “Our cinematics are now running at 1080p and 60FPS, and that involved rendering them all from scratch,” Druckmann continued. “It's interesting that now [instead of a technical bottleneck], the bottleneck is, 'Can we fit all of this on the disc?'”
Given the studio’s eye for detail, we’re sure that it will find a way to compress the clips without degrading any of their inherent quality. It’s worth remembering that in addition to the core campaign, the remaster will come with all of the original’s add-on packs, including the single player expansion The Last of Us: Left Behind, and the recently added enhanced difficulty tier. This cannot come soon enough!
Cause no game has ever been released on multiple discs, right?...
Never played this, day one purchase for me.
@charlesnarles I don't think I've seen two blu ray disks for a game yet.
@charlesnarles Not on the PS3 apart from special collector editions, but usually only with a normal CD with bonus material. Why would anyone launch a two blu-ray remaster?
Anyway, I'll get it when I eventually buy a PS4. I like how Naughty Dog seems to be using this definitive edition to see what they can do with the PS4.
1 reason I loved my ps3 was games like LA noir battlefields GTA all come on a single disk and the size if they are struggling to fit the remastered version of the last of us on a single blu ray it's gonna look amazing
Even dual layer?
I hope the PS4 supports the Blu-rays sucessor, cause it might need it down the line.
I wonder if the PS4 could be updated(via firmware) to play the XL Blu-rays? If not, not sure why SONY didn't think of that in the first place really. Oh well.
I don't support the practice of a remaster so early in a games life cycle.. but come on man it TLoU! I can't wait to start shiving clickers in dark settings
@Jaz007 I think they have made Bluray discs of to 500gb they just aren't readily available and being used yet.
@Carl-G I'm sure Sony would have thought ahead about that there are some ps3 games that almost reach bluray limit so they know what they need to do
Good luck to anyone that buys the Digital copy of this game.
They could make it a 2 disk set. Disc 1 for Install, then disc 2 with the any extra data and for game play.
I hope they can make it fit. Or just take the dlc off of the disc.
Considering how well the Tomb Raider remaster turned out, I'm looking forward to TLoU. Like Tomb Raider, I didn't get to play it in PS3.
I'm so hyped for this !
Title should be:
"Naughty Dog Struggling to Squeeze Another Press Release Out About The Last Of Us"
@fchinaski @THEundying27 what would be weird or unwieldy about games not being confined by the size if a single disc regardless of format? Give me a The Iliad game and it's sequel The Odyssey on 5 BluRays each. What would be the difference besides not getting off your butt?
@charlesnarles
As long as the disk space is actually used I don't have a problem with it. I've played at least one game where the second disk was literally just end-game bonus content (ToS grade shop) and nothing else.
I think thats the main reason studios don't like multi-disk as well, its another mostly unnecessary expense.
This game is going to look fantastic.
Like other ports and collections they will probably have download codes for the DLC and the like, reserving the disc space for all the upgrades.
Part of being a developer is possessing the skill to compress all that awesome into the constraints of the medium. I read an article once about the team that developed Street Fighter for the GBA when the system was launching, and how they had to cram a console game into a tiny little cartridge. They said there was ZERO room left, and it was like playing Tetris trying to find the right way to maximize space and get everything to fit.
If Naughty Dog is even half as skilled as their reputation that precedes them, they'll be able to fit this game with room to spare. That's what developers do.
I doubt this is actually true and nothing more then getting more sales with them talking about the quality of graphics. Sorry, but I don't believe this and to me it's nothing more than publicity for the remastered version of the game.
If they could fit Resident Evil 2 onto a single Nintendo 64 cart, then they can fit this onto a Blu-Ray
this game had good graphics on the three and WILL BE AMAZING if I could get myself to play it again and buy it again beyond two souls now that was brill.
Put it on two discs. Disc two could install onto the harddrive so that you have access to all of the game. They could also have a mandatory update that downloads the stuff they couldn't fit on the disc. I will not accept space deficiencies when every ps4 has a 500 gb harddrive.
While im not really a fan of TLoU, I still appreciate some of the things it did. One of those was the weighty feel to the combat, amplified by the games 30fps update. I fear upping to 60fps, reducing time between frames & upping response, may rob the game of some of its tension in combat. Killzone is a great example as its a series known for its weighty feel to its gunplay, but the multplayer on Shadowfall seems devoid of most of that compared to the SP/MP on 2 & 3 due to the push for 60fps (I do enjoy Shadowfall online tho) Lets hope a similar push doesn't do the same with TLoU
Is the Ps4 drive limited to only single-layer 50GB disks? gonna be a bit of an oversight further down the line if thats the case...
Simple really 2 disks one installed to harddrive thus speedy up the whole experience, DONE
@JaxonH
I am still amazed that Super Mario 3D World is less than 2GB.
If they cannot fit in in a single Blu Ray, then they can use two. They are charging full price anyway.
@Madd_Hatter401 i agree with you ..but man theres many ppl who didnt have a chance to play it especially those people who had 360
The future is digital. So I don't worry about discsizes anymore.
Considering the required install of every ps4 game I don't see why they don't use two discs. Problem solved.
@THEundying27 That's mainly because a Blu-Ray disk holds 25 GB of data per layer (So 50 GB for a dual layer disk). The only releases I can think of that used multiple Blu-Ray disks were actually remasters. My best example being the Killzone Trilogy remaster. KZ 1 & 2 were on Disk 1, and KZ 3 was on disk 2. The only thing is that was 3 games, so for a SINGLE game on PS4 to be released on 2 Blu-Ray disks this early in the console's life is pretty incredible to me.
@MadchesterManc I also just posted this on reply to THEundying27, but from what I've found, a Blu-Ray disk is 25 GB per layer, the 50 GB would be a dual-layer disk. Unless there's a special disk type made specifically for the PS4 that I don't know about.
Cant wait to play. Didn't have a ps3 and missed out on the original. However I would much rather they used multiple disc than possibly leave out features to save space.
Also I think there is way to much focus on this 60fps 1080p stuff.
