The Last of Us

While it may not have been developed for the PlayStation 4 first and foremost, Naughty Dog is packing so many improvements into The Last of Us Remastered that it’s currently struggling to squeeze the game onto a single Blu-ray disc. Speaking with EDGE magazine, creative director Neil Druckmann explained that the re-release will boast in-game character models on par with those seen in the PlayStation 3 version’s cut-scenes, as well as re-rendered cinematics and more.

“We brought in all of the hi-res models, and then it's on par with what you saw in the cut-scenes,” the developer told the abovementioned publication, as reported by Videogamer.com. “There's an improved lighting model. After that, we started looking across the board; enemies look a little blurry up close, so that was pretty easy. We ramped those up, and saw a pretty significant difference.”

As previously reported, the studio’s targeting 60 frames-per-second during gameplay, and it’s bumped up the cut-scenes to match. “Our cinematics are now running at 1080p and 60FPS, and that involved rendering them all from scratch,” Druckmann continued. “It's interesting that now [instead of a technical bottleneck], the bottleneck is, 'Can we fit all of this on the disc?'”

Given the studio’s eye for detail, we’re sure that it will find a way to compress the clips without degrading any of their inherent quality. It’s worth remembering that in addition to the core campaign, the remaster will come with all of the original’s add-on packs, including the single player expansion The Last of Us: Left Behind, and the recently added enhanced difficulty tier.
