June PlayStation Plus Freebies include PixelJunk Shooter Ultimate and Trine 2 on PS4

Posted by Sammy Barker

Service switches to two monthly next-gen giveaways from now on

That leaked PlayStation Plus list was accurate – but it wasn’t complete. As part of a couple of colossal PlayStation Blog posts, Sony has confirmed the latest set of Instant Game Collection giveaways for the month of June. These include beautiful medieval romp Trine 2: Complete Story and physics-based puzzler PixelJunk Shooter Ultimate on the PlayStation 4, as the manufacturer switches to a two titles per month format for all three of its supported systems.

Over in Europe, additional freebies will include slam dunk simulator NBA 2K14 and cross-buy survival horror Lone Survivor: The Director’s Cut on the PlayStation 3, while the Vita goodies will comprise vibrant Vanillaware brawler Dragon’s Crown and underrated puzzler Surge Deluxe. The lineup is slightly different in North America, with Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time and the aforementioned basketball game headlining on the PS3, while Terraria and Mutant Mudds Deluxe strut their stuff on the Vita. Both regions will play host to the same next-gen games.

Europe's June PlayStation Plus Update

  • Trine 2
  • PixelJunk Shooter Ultimate
  • NBA 2K14
  • Lone Survivor: The Director's Cut
  • Dragon's Crown
  • Surge Deluxe

Moving forwards, the Japanese giant will be adapting its approach to these giveaways in North America. Previously, the titles had been drip-fed over a prolonged period of time, but starting in July, everything will be made available on the first Tuesday of every month. This already occurs in Europe, and the platform holder has iterated that it will be sticking to this strategy in the Old World, too. Naturally, you’ll have until the first Tuesday in the following month to download everything that you want.

Curiously, it seems like the firm’s phasing out its evergreen titles, with no word on whether they'll be replaced. The likes of Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception and LittleBigPlanet Karting had been tentpole titles for the service, but it looks like the manufacturer is switching to a strictly month-by-month format, meaning that those long tail giveaways may cease to exist in the future. We’ll check in with the platform holder just to make sure.

North America's June PlayStation Plus Update

  • Trine 2
  • PixelJunk Shooter Ultimate
  • NBA 2K14
  • Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time
  • Terraria
  • Mutant Mudds Deluxe

Alas, while we wait for a response, we’d love to know your thoughts on this latest selection. Are you satisfied with the roster, or is it not exactly speaking to you? What are you most looking forward to downloading? Let us know in the comments section below.

Update: Sony has confirmed that its annual giveaways will no longer be part of the service. "To clarify, the annual ‘evergreen’ titles will not be replaced," blog manager Fred Dutton explained. "Instead, you’ll be getting one additional PS4 game every month. So, 2 x PS3, 2 x PS4, and 2 x Vita each month for the foreseeable future." What do you make of this move? Seeing as the Vita titles haven't changed for almost two years, we don't reckon that it's the end of the world. Either way, it's hard to grumble about six free games every month, isn't it?

Which PS Plus title are you most looking forward to in June? (57 votes)

Trine 2

PixelJunk Shooter Ultimate

NBA 2K14

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time (North America)

Lone Survivor: The Director's Cut (Europe)

Dragon's Crown (Europe)

Terraria (North America)

Surge Deluxe (Europe)

Mutant Mudds Deluxe (North America)

I'll slag PS+ when it's due and others stick their heads in the sand and I'll praise it justly when it's also due. Bit of both this month.

Trine on PS4 is a lovely surprise and Dragon's Crown is a game I've long had my eye on but not got. Lone Survivor looks intriguing too. The rest? Not for me. Basketball sends me to sleep and PixelJunk I have bad experiences from so has put me off (Sony charged me over £70 for the Vita PS+ version a few months back).

The lack of yearly titles is expected though as now Sony have our money with PS+ being a necessity on PS4 they don't need to entice us on any more.

get2sammyb said:

@rastamadeus Yeah, basketball's not for me either. I'm checking the yearly titles thing, it seems pretty poorly communicated in the PlayStation Blog post.

Poskito said:

I imagine that this is going to disappoint a lot of PS+ subscribers, but the offering is decent and i'm grateful for the 2 PS4 games a month from now on. Dragons Crown knocks it out of the park and i really want to play Lone Survivor and Pixeljunk Shooter.

For those that will inevitably complain about the indie titles, you've got to understand how young the console still is and the fact that you are getting these well-rated games for a mere fiver each month.

ToOGoodOfAPlaya said:

"Two next gen giveaways"? Which next gen games are they giving us? Knack? Killzone? inFAMOUS?

A rubbish or boring game is still rubbish or boring when it costs you nothing.

Itd be nice if they gave us a PS4 platform specific game.

Punished_Boss_84 said:

Thank god they organised the titles fairly among platforms instead of PS4 standing out from the crowd.

Oh right yeah give it time.

rastamadeus said:

@Punished_Boss Witty. But yes, stick their head in the sand. People see complaining and think it's about the quality of the games but it's not, it's the service slipping now you have to have PS+ on PS4.

darkswabber said:

Already own trine 2 on my wiiU, but I don't care
Now I hope the yearly games will include a good ps4 game, or 2.

EDIT: didn't read the end of the article. kinda sucks about the no yearly games anymore. But we get 12 ps4 games a year (1 a month) instead.

MadchesterManc said:

Trine 2 for Ps4 is a fantastic offering, but its not AAA so people are going to spit their dummys out regardless. Dragons Crown sounds much improved these days so that'll be worth a punt. Ill probably try all the other titles as well. Why not? Its not like its breaking the bank paying £11.99 every 3 months and trying games, like NBA 2K14 & Pixeljunk, that I wouldn't normally buy.

get2sammyb said:

@rastamadeus Is it slipping, though - or merely changing? A subscription is still going to grant you 72 games a year, they're just rotating much faster now.

rastamadeus said:

@get2sammyb I don't say slipping in the quality of the games, wanna make that clear. Everyone has different taste. I'm mainly peeved with the lies of PS+ not changing, a PS3 game going missing, yearly Vita titles gone, yearly PS3 titles seemingly gone, etc etc. If they say "Hey guys, we're changing it to X" then fair enough but they don't. Better communication is all I'd like, and in that regard Sony Europe are all over the place.

I'll give a tenner to the charity of your choice if there's yearly titles anymore though. It's done in exactly the same hush hush way they "announced" Vita's two yearly titles wouldn't be getting changed last year. Well, I say last year, they confirmed it about three months after the titles were due to change and lied about them "never changing" despite comments from staff there saying the yearly updates would be changed in a few weeks.

Punished_Boss_84 said:

@rastamadeus Thank you, i'm not against people complaining/praising certain things. I just sometimes disagree with their reasoning/supposed facts. The quality of the service and the quality of games (mainly PS4) are both being complained about. And judging from the comments from the US & EU blog, The other side of the world (US) thinks the other side of the world's (EU) offerings are better and vice versa.

Anyways... My word! Look at that comment section! 240+ comments! I can't tell if its good or bad (I'll go with the latter).

rastamadeus said:

@Punished_Boss I don't agree with the idiots complaining about "WHY ISN'T GAME X HERE! I DON'T LIKE GAME Y!" I just wanted to stress that not all the complaints on there are about that, but the service. Sadly these get lost amongst all those morons so people just see someone complaining about PS+ and think it's that when it's not. Does amaze me though that people think US PS+ could be better, we'll all get the same games, just not at the same time.

shingi_70 said:

I'm a bit surprised they're getting rid of the yearly IGC games, most of them were first party and were a good incentive for new users to get plus and acclimated to sonys first party.

Trine 2 is my most wanted game but I was kinda of hoping binding of Issac would have been ready this month.

freaksloan said:

Since I don't own a PS4 and have no intentions on buying one anytime soon, And Sony is taking away from PS3 and PS Vita's PS+, will my price go down? Why should I pay for the PS4 when I do not own one?

adf86 said:

@get2sammyb A lot of people on the blog post are commenting (more like demanding) that AAA games should be on it. I'm beginning to think a fair few people are waiting for AAA games to come on Plus now rather then buy them.

PorkinsUK said:

I'm pleased! Trine was on my to-play list, and I'm happy to finally try out PJ Shooter. I tried Lone Survivor on PC, but I'll give it a go again (specifically on Vita). I'm most stoked for Dragon's Crown, and I would've tried NBA but I'll pass on the PS3 edition.

In all, a pretty good month, though I'm quite jelly of America getting Mudds and Terraria. Very interested to see how the new changes to the service's structure pan out over the coming months.

Oh and that Injustice price drop is very welcome too!

KillTheG1mp said:

Unfair! You guys get Dragon's Crown and we get a craptacular game instead. I have zero interest in Terraria! (-_-) why am I Canadian, whyyyyyyy!?

Mrskinner said:

Dammit, I purchased Trine 2 already! lol. It is a very good game though, well worth a look if you haven't tried it.

naruball said:

As if online people would ever be satisfied with anything. For £40 a year, the ps+ subscription is a steal. I read some of the complaints and some people seem entirely out of touch with reality. AAA titles for ps4? You think they have unlimited funds to secure such titles? Hint: they don't.
Knack might not even be eligible due to its extremely low meta, which pretty much only leaves Killzone and Infamous as options.

get2sammyb said:

@adf86 The expectations for PlayStation Plus have become unreasonable from some people. I think that @rastamadeus' criticisms are perfectly valid, but, like you say, there's plenty of nonsense like "WHY AREN'T BATTLEFIELD 4 AND GRAND THEFT AUTO V FREE?"

Davros79 said:

Anybody who Hasn't played Trine2 is in for a treat. Its a SUPERB game. Pity i downloaded it 3 months ago

Munkyknuts said:

I was so so close to impulse buying Trine 2 just yesterday when I was idling my way through the playstation store....pleased I didn't. other than having no interest in sports games this is a good month for me

Dodoo said:

Cool, I'll be grabbing all 6 of those little beauties! Glad I held off getting Dragons Crown now...

Mrskinner said:

@get2sammyb Even if they did get Battlefield 4 and GTA 5 they would find something else to complain about! Just the way some people are.

Mrskinner said:

@Rapidaz haha they wouldn't complain about getting those, that's why I said some people would find something else to complain about. As the old saying goes you can't please all of the people all of the time.

Munkyknuts said:

@Davros79 I loved the 1st game and even my girlfriend who's gaming doesn't usually extend beyond tapping on her iPhone enjoys playing it.

Bad-MuthaAdebisi said:

Surprised to see surge so early, mustn't have done too well. Got my vote. Also interested in trine and dragons crown will slide nicely into my backlog, willing to give NBA a whirl but not that fussed. Nba jam on megadrive was the last basketball game I played.

RawShark said:

@SimonAdebisi NBA Jam was my last basketball game too! Except mine was on the Game Gear. If a basketball game doesn't allow you to set the ball on fire by sinking three shots in a row, then it's just not basketball to me

Splat said:

I like that the article gives both the EU and NA line up in one spot. Can we do that moving forward?

divinelite said:

Good, its trine2. i have this on pc but my graphic cardd doesn't match so i cant play it, already ask refund but no avail

And its the only 3d ps4 ever made!! oh beside daylight

Kyroki said:

To be perfectly honest, I'd love it if one of the free games-per-month would be like an old PSOne/PS2 title. That'd be a pretty cool addition in my opinion but I doubt that'd happen.

Volmun said:

Going to get Pixle Junk Shooter as i realy enjoyed the orignal 2

ztpayne7 said:

@iDangerMouse_ They've done that before - it's still possible I suppose, especially since that game would most likely also work with Vita.

On a side note, is the original trine important at all or is Trine 2 a completely separate story?

rjejr said:

@get2sammyb - "A subscription is still going to grant you 72 games a year"

With the big IF of IF you own all 3 systems. I picked PS+ up for whatever the deal was last BF when all the servers crashed, and I'ld pick it up again for whatever that price was, but as a PS3 only owner I doubt I would pay full price again until I gt a Vita o r PS4. Which means I really need to hurry up and finish all the games we've gotten recently - DD:DA, TR, DmC, BI - and put the ones I've paid for - Ni No Kuni, Darksiders 2 - on hold.

What Sony should do is make the EU and NA updates the same each month, that would help the drama a bit.

Oh, and I guess I'm the only one, but looking forward to Sly Cooper. PS+ rarely seems to give us games my kids can play, and I've been meaning to play this since launch.

BertoFlyingFox said:

PixelJunk shooter and Thieves In Time sound good to me.

As for the IGC change-up, I dont mind. It seems they're doing it to boost the value of it from month to people who were thinking about joining PS+ see what they could lose on a monthly basis if they dont sign up.

ztpayne7 said:

@rjejr Except that since they've had different ones already, they can't always have the same ones because that would mean they could never give away Dragon Crown on Vita because they can't do the same update (since EU already has it). It would've worked from the beginning, but it would cause more limitations now.

Are you at least "downloading" all the games for the systems you don't own?

rjejr said:

@ztpayne7 - "Are you at least "downloading" all the games for the systems you don't own?'

You know, I honestly never thought of doing that until I read your question. Which is funny b/c I read about people on here doing it all the time, usually on the website for people planning on buying a Vita. I'm not really in the market for a Vita or a PS4 but I guess I should just in case.

Thanks for the heads up.

Went and "purchased" a bunch of Vita and PS4 PS+ games, now I feel like I need to purchase the systems

Also found out I had a bunch of Sony Reward points to get a $5 PSN card so my kid can buy the Candy Land texture pack for Minecraft which he wanted to buy for 99c but Sony has a ridiculous $5 minimum limit on credit card purchases. We all win today.

Bliquid said:

Dragon's Crown.
Good things come to those who wait.
And i waited. Ooh, i waited.
Complaining about PS Plus value and offering is a self declaration of idiocy.

dynasty889 said:

I've played the demo of Trine 2 on the PS4, I enjoyed it a lot, so I am glad it is coming to PS+. Also I've never played any of the PixelJunk games so it's worth a try. Looks like I'll be renewing my subscription for June!

Deadstanley said:

I was upset when I bought Dragon's Crown Vita a month and a half back for full price to play with a friend (who, by the way, still hasn't taken the time to get far enough in the game to play multiplayer with) and then two weeks later there was a PSN sale on it bringing it from $40 to $20.

That kind of hurt, but what really had me tenderizing my wrists was that I heard it was going to be a June freebie. It really bothered me, because my purchase was so fresh and so MSRP. Seeing how this was for the EU PS+ benefits, I'm relieved. I was considering getting Trine 2 recently so I feel that with that PS+ benefit that I've made up for my DC price drop loss.

Midzark said:

Yay I'm happy!!, I love indie games and been thinking of buying Trine 2 so Result for me!! Not a fan of basketball!!

-CraZed- said:

Dragon's Crown but I'm in the US so Sly Cooper, Terreria and MMD will just have to do!

rastamadeus said:

@Rapidaz I'd complain about Battlefield 4 to be honest. Games a mess.

Despite not wanting the basketball game I'm delighted it's there this month as it shows they're at least trying to get away from just sodding shooting games constantly. Muramasa at the moment, Dragon's Crown next update, it's a pleasing change and gets people playing games they normally wouldn't try, which (for me) is the point of PS+. Put Project Diva f 2nd Vita on there!

Rapidaz said:

Just don't buy any ps4 games ever again and wait until the come on ps+ lol

jmburks said:

I'm pissed North America is not getting Dragons crown on the Vita! that is the only game i wanted on that list! noooo!

Tasuki said:

Nice. That was one thing I liked about Xbox's Games with Gold promotion was that they gave two free games a month over PSN's one.

Squiggle55 said:

All that matters is this: we are getting 1 more free game a month. Losing the IGC means absolutely nothing to anyone using their noggins. Why would I care if there are 13 games available at any given time when I've been a subscriber for years and download everything the week it is released? Like Sony pointed out in their blog post, you download the games the week they are released and they are yours as long as you are a member, so who cares how long they stay available? Sony is getting rid of the big headache that was the IGC and the different lengths "available" for each game. 6 games a month, 2 for each system, cut and dry. So much simpler to explain to kids who are prone to complain when they are confused, and 1 more game a month for us is all that really matters. Which is fantastic.

I voted for Pixeljunk Shooter. Something tells me that will be the one I spend the most time with for some reason.

delukze said:

Haven't played a Sly Cooper game since the PS2 days, so I gotta play this one!

CanisWolfred said:

I wouldn't want either of these two, personally...I already have them on PS3. And Trine 2 is terrible. Terraria and Sly Cooper, though. Damn. Too bad I own them already.

drumsandperc92 said:

super excited for Trine 2!!!! exactly my kind of game, but $20 has been a little steep. Ill try pixel junk too!
glad sony is giving us a bit more, because the titles so far have really not been for everyone...
But instead of 2 indies id rather Sony give us 1 retail game like Knack or something, been wanting to try that.
Although with Trine 2, i really can't complain this month!

bbq_boy said:

Lovely to see dragon crown on there. I own physical copy but now mates can get it and co-op with me trine 2 is sweet. As for nba14k it's not the sort of game I go for but for £3.50 a month, I am really grateful to be a member and to try out new games without wasting £10 - £50 in shops. Ps+ rules lol

blindndeaf said:

not sure if I am happy or not about this month of June games no wow factor again and nothing that could only be done on the four and people say they are free games but they are not and its supposed to be good value for money but in my eyes its not, there is no choice so if its not your type of game your stuffed.
still waiting for something that says wow the four !

drumsandperc92 said:

so im a bit confused about PS+, i see that we will get our games all at once, on the first tuesday of each month beginning of July.
But what about June?
Should we expect our plus games all tomorrow, the first tuesday? Or are they still being staggered out this month? And if so, does anyone have the dates they are being released?
