We don’t know about you, but our favourite thing about open world games is gradually exploring every facet of the map. Titles like Grand Theft Auto V and Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag have incredibly dense sandboxes, and there’s always something new to discover as a result. Ubisoft’s upcoming hack happy escapade looks set to adopt a similar philosophy, as this tour of the title’s Chicago setting indicates.
Captured by our friends over at PlayStation Access, the ten-or-so minute clip shows a single vehicle being driven through the city’s various wards, uncovering both rural areas and more densely populated urban environments. Visual downgrade or not, there certainly appears to be plenty to take in, and we reckon that the vehicle handling – which has been worked on by Driver: San Francisco developer Ubisoft Reflections – looks pretty great.

I think I'm looking forward to the story and hacking in this game than anything else. But yes, in any game, even ones like The Last of Us which aren't really open world, I like exploring every single part of the environments. The size of the map for Watch Dogs seems decent enough. At this point, the only thing I'm still wondering about is side missions. Some games do 'em right, others, like inFamous, don't.
@Gamer83 seems like there's at least lots of people to stalk, etc. and I'm sure there'll be tons of either random or scripted events for when you don't wanna do the main story. The guide is almost 600 pages, if that means anything.
I'm not watching the vid (til I get my game) but I'm glad to hear it's not a tiny but dense area like some "sandbox" games
@Gamer83 I agree - that was the weakest part of inFAMOUS, for sure. It sounds like there's going to be lots of variety here, but whether they'll actually be any good remains to be seen.
@get2sammyb @Gamer83 To be fair, I actually liked what infamous second son did - it's just those shouldn't have been the "side missions". They should have been extra things you did - kinda more like misc tasks in skyrim. Actual side missions of helping or hurting people could have fleshed the game out a lot more.
I have been playing the game for the past 24 hours pretty much solidly and I can confirm without spoiling anything that there is plenty to do in Chicago! Currently not enjoying the driving though, but the map is big enough with plenty to do
@Gamer83 side missions are a lot of fun. I really like watch dogs so far
@get2sammyb I hated how linear second son was. Watch dogs is nothing like that. It is loaded with stuff to keep you occupied
The map in infamous: 2nd son was tiny....I felt like I was just skulking around the same streets over and over again. I'd much prefer a larger less graphically impressive environment to something small no matter how beautiful it looks....I love having thing to discover and places to explore.
I can't wait to put on "Aiden Pearce's iconic cap".
@iDangerMouse_ ditto whatever has been said about this game, a lot of positive around the internet now (about the PS4 version anyway) and I try to avoid spoilers and didnt watch that vid either. Such a shame its out only after this long weekend
@Mrskinner the driving does look a bit too arcady in the vids.. i hope i enjoy the game as much as you are come Tuesday.
I wonder if my apartment building is on the map. Ha, I can't resist checking on Tuesday.
@Mrskinner
Cool. I have to wait until a few days after release to get the game but I am starting to get a little hyped for it again.
@Madd_Hatter401 I'm sure you will, having sunk a lot of hours into it now I can say there seems to be something for everyone and you can play it out as you want. All guns blazing, total stealth or a mixture of both. It's hard to talk about it without giving things away and I feel this game should be enjoyed without spoilers so I will stop there!
@N711 I think it's all good, hope you enjoy it!
@Gamer83 yeah my hype was suffering with the review embargo but for me, it's the same result as when they had the review embargo on gta 5. I am a great fan of both
@Madd_Hatter401
It's an open world game though. I don't think arcadey racing is as big a deal in this as say Gran Turismo.
@Mrskinner
GTA V is my favorite game of last-gen. I'm a huge fan of that game, if Watch Dogs is just half as good, I'll be happy.
@Munkyknuts I didn't think that second son was that small, especially when both islands were available, its just that it was nearly all the same, more variation like larger parks and suburb areas would have been good.
@SimonAdebisi it was very very samey but I do still think it was small....the neon ability to run up buildings and across the whole map in next to no time only increased the feeling of being enclosed.
@Munkyknuts I have to agree, with how quickly you could move around the world map it felt very small. The biggest problem for me though was I felt like I had nothing to do in the game, side activities were minimal and as you say the same all the time. I was really disappointed that the 2 other conduits were not used more for side activities as well
@Gamer83 it was my favourite game last gen also. Watch dogs is my pick of this gen so far for me personally. Just pips black flag for me for the urban feel, but I am a sucker for open world games
@Savino would you care to expand on that at all?
Can you steal every vehicle in this game?
@BloodyBill yes but not helicopters
@Savino see I'm not a big fan of the driving as stated, but the rest I have no problem with. I think the graphics are fine on ps4, and I have seen this playing on ultra on a top end pc and I think it looks great. Suppose everyone has their own opinions
@Savino I agree with you totally that graphics wise this doesn't scream next gen like infamous, but infamous bored me to tears. Nothing to do and very repetitive. Infamous looked amazing but was empty. Watchdogs is opposite. Infamous graphics and watchdogs immersion would be the perfect game for me! Haha
@Savino I totally agree with your comments, no where big as gta 5 but damn there is a lot going on around you in watchdogs!
@Savino see, I liked "Driv3r" for the weighty cars and disliked Sleeping Dogs' ultra zippy driving with goofy charge-up ram ability (also present in Driver:SF sadly). The first GTA5 driving sequence made me sad cause it was so unrealistically weightless-feeling. There's no charge-up ramming in W_D is there???
@charlesnarles I'm starting to get used to the driving a little bit more now. The ds4 is so sensitive in the driving, slight over use if pressure leaves the car wheel spinning. But I'm enjoying it more now, takes getting used to. So far though I'm struggling to see handling differences between vehicles though
Does the game have shops to buy clothing and a weapon shops like Amunation in GTAV?
@BloodyBill yes to both
