Got the Knack

With popular publication Famitsu already releasing its own PlayStation 4 sales figures for Japan, this week’s Media Create chart isn’t as interesting as it perhaps could be. Nevertheless, the research firm reports that the next-gen system sold 309,154 units during its first two days on the market – a figure that’s comparable to the 322,083 units revealed by the abovementioned magazine.

Unsurprisingly, Japan Studio’s critically lambasted throwback platformer Knack was the best selling game, moving 309,304 units in total. It’s worth remembering that the title was included for free with Limited Edition sets of the console, meaning that it actually only sold 150 copies outside of bundles.

Yakuza Ishin was the best selling non-collated title, accruing sales of 82,540 units on the Japanese giant’s new bit of kit. It was actually outperformed by its PlayStation 3 counterpart, which sold 138,158 units in total. Killzone: Shadow Fall was the next best selling PS4 title with 32,336 units, while Battlefield 4 came in right behind with 24,779 units.

Elsewhere, Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends managed 14,356 units, while Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, FIFA 14, and Need for Speed: Rivals all managed to appear in the top twenty. In truth, while the hardware numbers are strong, we reckon that the firm will be disappointed with the software figures.

Still, it’ll perhaps be a little happier to see the PlayStation Vita continuing to sell well year-over-year, with the console once again managing to move over 15,000 units for the week. The ageing PlayStation 3 continued its decline, managing just 9,983 units, while the PS Vita TV actually improved over last time, netting numbers in the region of 1,383 units.

What do you make of this week’s Japanese sales figures? With very few regional focused releases on the horizon, we reckon that the software numbers spell a little trouble for the PS4 moving forwards. However, it’s nice to see the hardware starting strong, and at least Knack is finally set to get some attention – even if the platform holder did have to give it away.
