What Does the PS4's European Launch Lineup Look Like?

Posted by Sammy Barker

Well, it's quite big

We’ve barely recovered from the PlayStation 4’s previous launch, but we’re grudgingly prepared to do it all over again. As the butterflies in your bellies will no doubt corroborate, Sony’s next generation console is due out in Europe this week – and the platform holder has deployed the device’s full list of launch software in order to help you to celebrate.

It’s worth noting that the digital prices of EA’s titles have dropped yet again, after the publisher was subjected to an online backlash regarding the cost of its releases earlier in the week. You’ll now be able to nab the likes of FIFA 14 for £54.99 from the PlayStation Store, which is much more reasonable than the £62.99 figure that the firm had attached to the soccer sim previously.

There’s a lot to get through here, so we’re going to dive right into it. Don’t forget that both Resogun and Contrast will be available to PlayStation Plus members for free. What titles are you picking up with your system? Are there any releases that you’re still unsure about? Flash your hard earned cash in the comments section below.

I have no reason to buy PS4 so far. Maybe just for kicks. Eh... And all because of Drive Club were postponed. And all my time now goes to Soul Calibur 2 HD. Enjoying this game SOOOOOO much... Sad that they didn't port it on PS4. Very sad T___T... And all those EA , Ubisoft and Sony generec games is just not my cup of tea. Very tired of them.

Just noticed that Flower is cross buy. I already own the PS3 version, does that mean I can get it for PS4 for free? Hmm.

I paid off my PS4 pre-order today (traded in a bunch of PS3 games to help, they were just sitting on the shelf gathering dust anyway. It still hurt a little). So all ready for pick-up tomorrow!

Current game plans -
Assassin Creed IV
Killzone (held till Christmas)
Wareframe
War Thunder
Resogun (yes Sammy you convinced me to try. The price helps)
Contrast

Interestingly, I also chatted to him about the XBO sales, which he said were selling quite well, but they still have stock. For the PS4 on the other hand, he confirmed there is zero stock for launch tomorrow. All shipments have been allocated to pre-orders and they will not have any stock until early in 2014. His words were "Demand is very high".

Ah what the hell, let’s take a look at this launch line up. Now let’s see…

Angry Birds Star Wars - Seriously? 35 Euros for this game?
Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag – I was done with the AC after AC2 when they started releasing a game every year.
Battlefield 4 and Call of Duty: Ghosts – I don’t like FPS war games.
Contrast (PS Plus) played it on the PC didn't like it.
FIFA 14, Madden NFL 25, NBA LIVE 14 and Need For Speed Rivals – EA wont be seeing any of my money until they change their policy/attitude/strategy.
DC Universe Online – May actually try this out.
Killzone - Will be coming with the bundle and it will be sold asap.
Resogun (PS Plus) - I will definitely enjoy that.
Flower and Sound Shapes - Already owned and finished so no interest there.
Trine 2: Complete Story – You can get it on PC much cheaper.
Injustice: Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition – My Street Fighter days are behind me. Great game though.
Just Dance 2014 – If it was a new Singstar I would consider it, but this? Nope.
Knack – Ratchet and Clank in the Nexus is out. Need I say more?
LEGO Marvel Super Heroes – Not a next gen title and you can play it elsewhere.
NBA 2K14 – Great game. Considering it.
Putty Squad – A game that was created during the Amiga era can’t be that bad. This has Ps Vita written all over it.
Super Motherload – Nice game, I will probably not be playing this on my PS4 though.
Warframe – Didn’t try it on PC and I’m not a dedicated online FPS player so… I’ll pass.
War Thunder – Now this looks interesting (open beta available on their site if you want to check it out)

Well so much for a “Next Gen” launch (same goes for the XBone). You can play or have already played, most of these games on another platform or a PC and at higher resolutions than 1080p. Not many fresh ideas, not a single Killer App. Come on guys, you could do better than that. So many games in development yet all we get is this generation’s latest releases.

The launch line up in numbers, just for fun.
24 launch games.
12 of them are sequels
18 are multiplatfrom games
6 are Playstation exclusives
2 are PS4 exclusives.
4 are FPS games.
4 are Sports games
4 are Online games
1 is an MMO RPG.
0 games are an RPG.
1 is a racing game.
3 are Indie games
2 are a new IPs

After Watch Dogs Drive Club and Infamous Second Son got pushed back and we were left with the usual suspects, I lost my enthusiasm about the launch. Still excited though about all the great future releases. I wish a great “launch” experience to all without hardware problems. Now excuse me I have some PS3 games to finish. ;)

P.S. Those PS4/Vita games that are cross buy will be available for free on your PS4/Vita if you already own them on PS3.

@Cybotika Yes I do, and am a PS+ member. Just indicating that they were the games I was intending to play. My price comment was a joke. Easy to convince me to try when it is free.

@Sutorcen Interesting. I agree with many of your thoughts, but not all. My interest in the launch line-up dwindled greatly when Watch_Dogs and DriveClub got delayed. I am also not giving EA any of my money, though I tend to break when they release a Mass Effect title. Still, personally I am looking forward to AC4. I really enjoy the series, even if it has lost something since AC2. I am curious about Warframe and have played Birds of Steel which is by the same gang as War Thunder. It was fantastic, but incredibly hard unless you dumbed down the controls. I will be interested to see the learning curve. In any case, I want to give it a go. Don't personally have a gaming PC.

Persona Q really got my attention. If you enjoy RPGs try Etrian Odyssey. They are pretty fun and one of the creators is helping develop Persona Q.
SMT IV is great and I also enjoyed a lot Project X Zone, even though the story is weak and the gameplay is a little repetitive. If you never played SMT: Devil Survivor, Overclocked, the 3DS port is great, but it can be brutal.
Also, try Fire Emblem: Awakening. It's a fantastic game!
On topic: I also have no reason to get a PS4 right now, because I have a lot of PS3 games that I want to finish and that I want to get, specially now that Persona 5 was announced.

I can't wait to play driveclub either. I'm sure the delay will make it worth the wait. I would rather a game take longer to be released and be the best it can be than it be rushed and be mediocre.

@Ginkgo yes you can quickly add Flower to the list of free games on your PS4 if you already bought it. Make sure you also get it on your Vita (if you have it). One low price for all 3 systems? win.
