With the recent release of the swashbuckling Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, there is one question on everyone's mind: where will Ubisoft's flagship franchise go now? While we still don't have a clear idea of where (or when) the Templars will strike next, a recent Reddit AMA with the series' lead writer Darby McDevitt has revealed a bounty of information on the future of the long-running series.
One thing's for sure, the next assassin probably won't be battling Abstergo with an iPad and an Internet connection. McDevitt cites the difficulty of developing a modern iteration of Assassin's Creed as the main reason for this. "There are just too many mechanics we would have to develop to make it believable: vehicles, plausible modern cities, a huge array of ranged weapons, etc," he said. However, he urges fans to consider Watch Dogs as a viable alternative. "While not in the Assassin's Creed universe, I think that Watch Dogs will scratch the itch for a modern day Assassin's Creed," he continued. "Just wait!"
It also seems that Assassin's Creed III's solemn protagonist Connor won't be making a return to the franchise. McDevitt notes that we're "not very" likely to see a new game starring the erstwhile hero, also confirming the he won't be receiving the short film treatment that Ezio saw in Assassin's Creed Embers.
Were you looking forward to battling Abstergo in a bustling modern metropolis? Does Connor's departure from the series leave a bad taste in your mouth? Liberate your opinions in the comments section below.

Good, the unique settings are the best thing about this series. I have no idea why everyone's so desperate to play another open world game in yet another contemporary American city.
@get2sammyb
could be b/c there's so many desperate contemporary american citizens !
seriously though
i'd like to see an english civil war (1642-1651) cavaliers vs roundheads setting
no, i'd rather them go further back in time. honestly they've gone as far present as they could with Connor, MAYBE they could make an 1800s setting work, a la europe during the industrial revolution. That's about it. Much more present than that and then you have what they mentioned in this article; vehicles, sprawling metropolises with skyscrapers, too many accurate ranged weapons, etc.
I'd rather see a return to a time even before the renaissance where they eliminate the entire gun mechanic. The crossbow was about as far as i would've liked to see ranged weapons go, the addition of the gun in AC3 was handled well though. But i'd rather go back to ACII w/o any ranged weapons (i know he had the hidden pistol but it was like a one shot deal and you couldn't be that far)
I'd LOVE to see ancient Egypt, feudal japan, ancient greece, persia, etc. any of those locations.
Or a South American native american - mayans, incas, aztecs, any of those civilizations. They could do a lot more w/ 'those who came before' if they go further back...
@drumsandperc92
admit it , you're thinking dinosaurs aren't you ?
Conner was boring...and the War of independence setting didn't do it for me...I particularly disliked the way muskets were utilised in the game. I have no interest in a modern setting for the game but it would be nice if the sections of the games set in contemporary times felt more relevant than they do. ...right now they just drag me out of the period setting I was enjoying and force me into conversations and tasks that exist to further the matrix alike plot. Assassins Creed 2 was the pinnacle of the series for me. If Black flag approaches that level of awesome it will be the 1st PS4 game I get.
I have heard talk about Ancient Egypt or L.A. Noire times
Personally I want ancient China.
@Ginkgo Yes, yes, yes! A hundred times yes!
Why not use feudal Japan as a setting? It'd definitely be a believable setting, and Ubisoft could do a lot with the story if, say, the Templars happened to get some Ninja in their employ to face off against the player.
