PlayStation 3

Sony has deployed a brand new firmware update for the PlayStation 3 – and this one does a little more than offer operational stability. The system software refresh – which is available now – augments a handful of, er, handy new features, including the ability to auto download updates and purchases made from the PlayStation Webstore.

“Wait a minute,” we hear you scream. “Those were PlayStation Plus perks previously!” Correct. It seems that the platform holder has decided to make the features free in order to bring the current generation console in line with the PlayStation 4. Other improvements include the ability to hide Trophy data – so no one will know that you’ve got the Platinum in Hannah Montana: The Movie – and the option to transfer data between the PS3 and Vita using a Wi-Fi connection.

A pretty useful update overall, then. We’ve just downloaded and installed the file and it took about 10 minutes on an average connection, so make sure that you set aside some time to do that if you don’t have auto updates switched on already. If you spot any other tweaks or improvements, don’t forget to share them in the comments section below.
