PlayStation Eye

Sony’s been fairly quiet about the PlayStation 4 camera’s features – perhaps in an attempt to avoid comparisons to Microsoft’s much more prominent Kinect peripheral. However, speaking as part of a roundtable at the Tokyo Game Show this morning, SCEJ executive Masayasu Ito casually hinted that the enhanced device may be able to provide gesture-based navigation in the future.

Ito wouldn’t confirm a roadmap for the functionality, but we reckon that it’ll definitely be implemented at some point beyond release. The company man ambiguously added that the technology “could go deeper”, but failed to elaborate. At launch, the enhanced PlayStation Eye will use facial recognition to log you into your PlayStation Network profile, and will allow you to use Siri-esque commands to launch games.

Of course, the camera is still a totally optional accessory – but it’ll be interesting to see whether the promise of these features prompt some of you to splash out on the device. It’s certainly getting more and more attractive, though we’d personally like to see a couple more games take advantage of the gadget before fully recommending the additional purchase.
